Whether it is yachting, golf, watersports, horse riding, cycling, tennis or polo that light your fire, all are available and celebrated here. For golfers, there are five 18-hole golf courses in Sotogrande including Valderrama - host of the European Tour’s Volvo Masters, the 1997 Ryder Cup and ranked Europe’s number 1 course since the 1980s. Others designed by leading golf course architects Cabell B. Robinson, Robert Trent Jones and Dave Thomas include the La Reserva Club de Golf, host of the PGA NH Collection Open tournament and The Ladies European Tour, La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational and the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. There is also the San Roque Club, with 36 holes, which is just a few minutes away. For polo lovers, Sotogrande boasts more than 25 annual tournaments as well as multiple equestrian centres and stables alive with activity all year round. For sailors, a fully developed yacht harbour with 1,400 berths and a 70 meter docking capacity make Sotogrande’s marina a hive of sailing activity. There are many beaches in and nearby this magnificent destination. Closest are the 2km long Playa Sotogrande with the Trocadero Beach Club and the 1km Playa Paseo del Mar with the El Octógono Beach Club and watersports centre. However, if you are looking for something more isolated, the quiet 5km long Playa Guadalquitón is just west of the Sotogrande community. La Reserva Club Perched in a prime position above the 18th hole of the La Reserva Club golf course, guests at La Escondida will enjoy direct access to the golf course and privileged access to its state-of-the-art amenities. Rarely can golfers experience a truly world-class destination where a superb course is combined with sublime gastronomy, and a wonderful array of sporting and leisure facilities, but this is what you can find at La Reserva Club. Designed by Cabell B Robinson, the 18-hole championship course is a must-play for any golfer visiting Southern Spain. Part of the World of Leading Golf network, the golf club has appointed Ryder Cup champion Manuel Piñero as the resident professional to enhance and grow member services on the ground. Opened in 2003, the 7,400-yard course is highlighted by wide, sweeping fairways that lead to large, fast, undulating greens - which challenge every aspect of even the most accomplished golfer’s game. Previously a European Tour tournament host, La Reserva Club is widely acclaimed for its stunning vistas and immaculate condition, a fact that is demonstrated by the resort’s ninth-place position in the list of the Top 100 Golf Courses in Spain, as judged by renowned course rankings site, top100golfcourses.com. Beyond its celebrated golf course and racquet club, La Reserva Club offers a one-of-a-kind setup with its own beach with sandy bottom lagoon and full-service beach club restaurant to meet the needs of the entire family. Nature lovers can also enjoy the trails on foot, by bike or on horseback, all nestled within the boundaries of the estate. Gastronomy plays a central part, and the Club is a culinary hub offering a diverse and ever-changing gourmet experience. SPORTING LEGENDS: SEVE BALLESTEROS SPORT: GOLF COMPETITIVE ERA: 1974 - 2008 Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros (born 9 April 1957 in Pedreña, Spain) is a Spanish golfer who was one of the sport's leading figures in the 1980s and 1990s. Ballesteros turned professional in March 1974 at the age of 16. In 1976, he burst onto the international scene with a second-place finish in The Open Championship; he went on to win the European Tour Order of Merit (money title) that year, and repeated his Order of Merit win the following two years. He would go on to win the Order of Merit six times, a record at that time (since surpassed by Colin Montgomerie). Ballesteros went on to win five major championships: The Masters: 1980, 1983 His 1980 win was the first at Augusta by a European player. The Open Championship: 1979, 1984, 1988. He was also a great at match play; he won the World Match Play Championship five times, and was a mainstay of the European Ryder Cup team for much of the 1980s and 1990s. He scored 20 points out of 37 matches against the United States; his partnership with José María Olazábal was one of the most successful in the history of the competition, with 11 wins and two halved matches out of 15 pairs matches. While Ballesteros was a member of European sides that won the Ryder Cup in 1985, retained the Cup in 1987 and 1989, and regained the Cup in 1995, the pinnacle of his career in the competition came in 1997, when he captained the winning European side at Valderrama Golf Club in Sotogrande, Spain.
