Allow the PCs to make last minute preparations before landing. Are they preparing weapons they want to carry off the ship? Are they hiding contraband? You land in Mos Eisley at Docking Bay 94, excited to conclude this transaction. Of course, as you disembark, you realize this deal is no better than any other. There is no cargo skiff, no transport and most annoying of all… no astromech. Instead, there’s a buck-toothed Twi’lek in fine robes. He steps toward you as your feet touch down on Tatooine sand. The Twi’lek bows courteously and says, “Greetings. I am Bibfort, Mr. Watto’s personal assistant. I trust you had no problem acquiring the cargo? Mr. Watto would like for me to inspect it if I may?” PCs can stay and watch Bibfort spend three hours going overthe cargo in excruciating detail, or they can head to the cantina.

I can read and give an assessment of a story THE HERO’S JOURNEY is a template (a bit like a story mountain) that has been used for some of the greatest stories ever told, all the way back from ancient myths to modern classics like Narnia and Star wars. Over the next three weeks, we are going to use it to write our own story One of the reasons STAR WARS is such a great movie is it because it follows the HERO’S JOURNEY model. The central character Luke Skywalker, is compelled by destiny and a burning inner desire to become a member of the ancient but dying order of Jedi Knights. In the tradition of ancient Greek tragedy the conflict Luke is engrossed in is a war of good vs evil as he becomes a member of the Rebel forces battling the powerful and relentless forces of the Empire. To do so he must journey to a far off mysterious planet to gain the wisdom of the ancient Yoda (a parallel to the oracle of Apollo) who teaches him the secret of the "Force"-- a universal energy something akin perhaps to the stoic notion of the "Logos". Soon he finds himself on a mission to save a Princess belonging to the old, and presumably legitimate, royal family who has fallen into the hands of the Empire and the notorious Darth Vader. Luke does rescue the princess and soon falls in love with her only to find later that he is her brother. Likewise, throughout the film Darth Vader has a strange preoccupation with the fledgling knight and seems to have a premonition that he will perhaps be the one who will precipitate his death (paralleled with Laius in Oedipus Rex). In a dramatic duel to the death with Darth Vader Luke later discovers that his arch nemesis is none other than his father himself.

ABSTRACT Mythic narratives exert a powerful influence over societies, and few mythic narratives carry as much weight in modern culture as the Star Wars franchise. Disney’s 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm opened the door for new films in the franchise. 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the second of these films, takes place in the fictional hours and minutes leading up to the events portrayed in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Changes to the fundamental myths underpinning the Star Wars narrative and the unique connection between these film have created important implications for the public memory of the original film. I examine these changes using Campbell’s hero’s journey and Lawrence and Jewett’s American monomyth. In this thesis I argue that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was likely conceived as a means of updating the public memory of the original 1977 film.
