Black women often experience based on their appearance. One might assume that the same judgments apply to all Black people across the board, but colorism creates a divide between Black women with lighter and darker skin. In the latest episode of Go Off Sis, three Black women get honest about light-skin privilege. This privilege is apparent in many aspects of life, including at school, the office, and even in relationships. McMillan echoes this sentiment saying, "I've had guys tell me that, 'Oh I don't date Black girls, but I date light-skin girls. Hinton points out that erasing light-skin privilege starts within the Black community. But never before like this Slaughter must be one of the best ever writers. I even love her acknowledgements - 'Sue Kurylowicz was the winner of the 'Get Slaughtered' contest, granting her the dubious honour of having her name appear in this book. Sue, honey, you DID ask to be bad I didn't think I was going to bond with this book to begin with as a lot of it is centred around the methamphetamine industry, but she had me after the first couple of pages. Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs are running to stand still to keep up with her. No-one will. It takes a special author to shock a reader for 7 sequential books. Slaughter does it without flinching and without resorting to sensationalism. And she is never boring. Join the ride as Sara and Jeffrey follow his fellow detective, Lena, to hell. Her characters are flawless and flawed. Read it. View all 7 comments. Nov 17, Susanne Strong rated it really liked it Shelves: audiobooks , library-book. Just call me devastated. The entire book is one huge tension-filled ride and just when you think it's safe to breathe I think that's all I'll say about the book. Lena's story ends tragically too as she still can't cut the ties between her Nazi skinhead boyfriend and herself. Sara and Jeffrey's dreams of adopting a child and having a family and living happily ever after are gone with his tragic death. In a way I understand. Jeffrey is a hero, he can't not stand up for what's right and helping people, eve Why? Jeffrey is a hero, he can't not stand up for what's right and helping people, even Lena. His tragic death is inevitable and comes with the life of an upstanding policeman against ancient and deadly evil. But even though I understand it, I don't have to l like it. View all 8 comments. May 29, Debra rated it it was amazing. God damn it. I want to punch Karin Slaughter in the face right now. Seriously, I do! This book is the finale book in the Grant County Series. Holy Crap! I guess this series had to end one way or another. Lena, once again, is up to her eyeballs in trouble. Her bad decision making and self destructing ways lead her down a path that in turns leads Jeffery and Sara down the same path. Lena has been arrested for Murder and needs help. Sara is up to her eyeballs in stress as she is being sued by a forme God damn it. Sara is up to her eyeballs in stress as she is being sued by a former patients parents. But she welcomes going out of town with Jeffrey to help Lena as a way of escaping her own worries for awhile. Little does she know that Lena has stumbled into a MESS and not a little mess either but a huge one full of organized crime, drugs,an incarcerated ex-boyfriend, and lots of fire. They appear to have bitten off more than they can chew in this book and right when we see Sara and Jeffrey in a happy place. This book begins with a bang and it end with one also. I wont give it away but it was a sad ending to a series I grew to love. Karin Slaughter continues to be my favorite Author. Holy Hell, this was a rough one! Loved it. She officially ripped out my heart and stomped on it and boy what a ride. Another great read. She knocked it out of the ballpark with this finale. See more of my reviews at www. View all 6 comments. How did I not get into Karin Slaughter books in my teen years? Where was I? Was I living under a rock, was I trying too hard to be into chick-lit? I'll read them backwards. I'm glad Slaughter doesn't go too in depth about their pasts because what was happening to Jeffrey, Sara, and Lena at this moment was enough for me to be hooked It took me 3 days to finish, which lately being in a reading funk, says a lot about how I How did I not get into Karin Slaughter books in my teen years? It took me 3 days to finish, which lately being in a reading funk, says a lot about how I devoured the story. The story starts out with Lena being in trouble. She is in an Escalade with some very scary masked men and another woman. They make Lena drive to the high school football field, inject meth in the blond woman's arm to subdue her, pour lighter fluid on her and set the woman and car on fire while Lena watches. Intense beginning right? Sara is in a malpractice suit that impacts her way of thinking and halts her reason and confidence. Jeffrey and Sara who can't stand Lena come to Lena's rescue as she's hospitalized after this viscous attack. Lena says nothing to anyone, tricks Sara, and escapes. This is where the fun begins people! The small town turns out to be worse than anyone can imagine. The skin heads, the crackheads, the meth heads, and the crooked officers Enter young newly appointed Sheriff Jake Valentine! He seems to want to help but doesn't do things the way Chief Jeffrey Tolliver deems fit. The suspicions grow, the old boyfriends come back, and everyone in between is being found dead. Anyway, I appreciate Slaughter's ending because life can't be so happy go lucky. I can see why fans would want to yell at her. I honestly didn't see it coming!!!! It was a WTF moment The ending was a fiver because if you can't close your mouth after that ending it has to be that good. On to book 5! Aug 30, DeAnn rated it really liked it. She has created realistic flawed characters that I both love and hate in the same series! Sometimes even in the same book! This one has a lot of Lena and boy, is she one of those characters! This book explores her hometown and the unsavory characters there -- much as the last one explored Jeffrey's hometo 4. This book explores her hometown and the unsavory characters there -- much as the last one explored Jeffrey's hometown. No wonder they both left! Sara Linton is an equally flawed character, but my heart broke a bit for her with the malpractice suit. And that ending, oh my! I won't say anymore. Even though I knew it was coming, it was haunting. I have heard the author explain why she took this course, but doesn't mean I like it! I will be off to read the Will Trent series now and there are a ton of books in that one. I looked forward to Beyond Reach for quite some time, and picked it up as soon as it was released. Most of the book featured what had, at that point, been trademarks of Ms. Slaughters' - an intricate plot carried along by well-developed characters to whom the readers could relate, or at the very least, find interesting and compelling. And then, there were the last two pages. I've read all of the reviews admonishing those who gave this book a low rating, on the grounds that these are, of course, Ms. Slaughters' characters, and she can do with them whatever she so chooses. I agree with that, to an extent. The problem lies in the fact that fans of this series had been made to invest in certain characters and relationships, and have followed them as problems and issues were confronted and resolved, resulting in character growth and more enriched connections and dynamics. To all of a sudden bring such a devastating conclusion to an aspect of this particular series that had just reached a truly significant turning point - what could even be described as something of a pay-off for all of those who had faithfully followed the maturation of the relationship in question - seemed entirely unnecessary. I have never subscribed to the notion that events such as the one that transpired here are all well and good in that it keeps readers on their toes and shifts storylines into new, exciting dimensions. Instead, it always feels cheap and manipulative and disrespectful to fans, and that is, unfortunately, the case here. Prior to this point, I had believed Ms. Slaughter to be an author who was confident enough in her own storytelling abilities that she wouldn't feel the need to resort to cheap tricks in an effort to build up so-called suspense. I'm disappointed that she chose to irrevocably disabuse me, and everyone else who was displeased with the ending, of that notion. I absolutely hated the ending, and have not been able to attribute anything even remotely positive to what transpired, in terms of future plots. Feb 27, Wendy rated it really liked it Shelves: books , wom , may , feb Finished re-reading listening to this 6th book in Karin Slaughter's Grant County series. I loved the story and only gave it 4 stars because of the shocking ending. I do understand why the author ended the book the way she did but that doesn't change how I feel about it. Lena has really managed to get herself into a pickle this time. The love between Jeffrey and Sara is so real in this book, not idealized. Aug 23, Janice rated it it was amazing. Great writing by Slaughter as always I was literally heartbroken!! I cannot believe Karin Slaughter did that!!! I highly recommend first time readers of this series Grant County to start from the beginning because you gotta understand the complexity of these characters. There's just so much to Lena Adams, Sara Linton, and Jeffrey Tolliver that you can't really get from just reading this book. A must-read for suspense-thriller fans!! The ending View 2 comments. I don't even want to give this book a full star. She has lost a fan. I always loved her ending making you want more but all I found with the ending of this book was an end. I will not be buying the next book in the Grant County Series. I equate the ending of this book with this if JK Rowling had killed off Harry Potter in the 4th book why read the rest the main character is gone. What is the use. I was never able to connect with Lena or Sara but I did connect with Jeffrey. I hope she rethinks he I don't even want to give this book a full star. I hope she rethinks here decision. I could even stand a "Bobby Ewing Dream Chapter" just to have the character back. Jun 29, K. Having read things in order, there are a lot of little threads that finally get pulled together in this, the last book of the Grant County series, and those threads made a lot more sense now that I've actually read the series in order rather than all over the damn place. And even knowing what was coming, that ending totally blew my mind because while I knew what was coming, I'd forgotten the HOW and y. I'm looking forward to getting stuck into rereading the Will Trent books now! Somehow when I devoured the Grant County books a couple of years ago, I missed out on this one. I'm still not sure HOW I did that, considering this one ends with a super major massive plot point that has massive ramifications for the subsequent books. So I knew about the super major massive plot point? But I'd never actually read about it happening. Ultimately, this one was a bit of a let down for me. It's so ridiculously Lena-focused, and she drives me nuts. And because I knew from the get go what was going to happen, I was basically disappointed when it kept NOT happening because I was constantly anticipating it. On the whole, I enjoy this slightly disturbing series. But this one seemed pretty disjointed, and the story never really flowed for me. But I just I mean, it was good. But it wasn't what I was anticipating, knowing what the super major massive plot point was. Jun 18, Brenda rated it it was amazing Shelves: library-book. Darn you Karin Slaughter!! In Backlash: What Happens When We Talk Honestly about in America , philosopher George Yancy expands on the concept of white backlash as an extreme response to loss of privilege, suggesting that DiAngelo's white fragility is a subtle form of defensiveness in comparison to the visceral racism and threats of violence that Yancy has examined. White privilege functions differently in different places. A person's white skin will not be an asset to them in every conceivable place or situation. White people are also a global minority, and this fact affects the experiences they have outside of their home areas. Nevertheless, some people who use the term "white privilege" describe it as a worldwide phenomenon, resulting from the history of colonialism by white Western Europeans. One author states that American white men are privileged almost everywhere in the world, even though many countries have never been colonized by Western Europeans. In some accounts, global white privilege is related to American exceptionalism and hegemony. The system in Namibia created the legal environment for establishing and maintaining white privilege. The segregation of peoples both preserved racial privileges and hindered unitary building. In a NYT analysis, Joseph Lelyveld reported how measures which would challenge white privilege in the country were disregarded, and how politicians, such as Dirk Mudge , ignoring the policy of racial privilege, faced electoral threats from the black majority. Research conducted by the Journal of Southern African Studies in has investigated how white privilege is generationally passed on, with particular focus on the descendants of German Namibians , who arrived in the s and s. White privilege was legally enshrined in South Africa through apartheid. Apartheid was institutionalized in and lasted formally into the early s. Under apartheid, racial privilege was not only socially meaningful—it became bureaucratically regulated. Many scholars say that 'whiteness' still corresponds to a set of social advantages in South Africa, and conventionally refer to these advantages as "white privilege". The system of white privilege applies both to the way a person is treated by others and to a set of behaviors, affects, and thoughts, which can be learned and reinforced. These elements of "whiteness" establish social status and guarantee advantages for some people, without directly relying on skin color or other aspects of a person's appearance. Academic Scott Kiesling 's co-edited The Handbook of Intercultural Discourse and Communication suggested that white English speakers are privileged in their ability to gain employment teaching English at Eikaiwa schools in Japan, regardless of Japanese language skills or professional qualifications. White privilege has been analyzed in South Korea , and has been discussed as pervasive in Korean society. White residents, and tourists to the country, have been observed to be given special treatment, [93] and, in particular, white Americans have been, at times, culturally venerated. A study found that 40 percent of females in the country used skin whitening products, which professor Charles A. Gallagher described as serving as "a mark of beauty for women, a tangible asset that privileges those with lighter skin". Lee has noted that possessing mixed white and Korean heritage, or, specifically, its physical appearance, can afford a biracial individual white privilege in the country. The of US military camptowns in South Korea a remnant of the Korean War have been studied as a setting for white privilege, and an exacerbation of racial divides between white American and African American soldiers located on bases, as well as with local Korean people. In , the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario received media coverage when it publicly advertised a workshop for educators about methods of teaching white privilege to students. In , the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences suspended a man from attending their annual meeting for three years for racially profiling a black Canadian scholar. The federation stated that it required the offender to demonstrate that he had taken measures to increase his awareness of white privilege before he would be allowed to attend any future congress. Later in the year, a former First in Manitoba grand chief stated how many indigenous Canadians perceived the court system of Canada to discriminate against them under the structure of white skin privilege. Some scholars attribute white privilege, which they describe as informal racism , to the formal racism i. Wildman writes that many Americans who advocate a merit-based, race-free worldview do not acknowledge the systems of privilege which have benefited them. For example, many Americans rely on a social or financial inheritance from previous generations, an inheritance unlikely to be forthcoming if one's ancestors were slaves. In the middle of the 20th century, the government subsidized white homeownership through the Federal Housing Administration , but not homeownership by minorities. According to Roderick Harrison "wealth is a measure of cumulative advantage or disadvantage" and "the fact that black and Hispanic wealth is a fraction of white wealth also reflects a history of discrimination". Over the past 40 years, there has been less formal discrimination in America ; the inequality in wealth between racial groups however, is still extant. Thomas Shapiro wrote that wealth is passed along from generation to generation, giving whites a better "starting point" in life than other races. According to Shapiro, many whites receive financial assistance from their parents allowing them to live beyond their income. This, in turn, enables them to buy houses and major assets which aid in the accumulation of wealth. Since houses in white neighborhoods appreciate faster, even African Americans who are able to overcome their "starting point" are unlikely to accumulate wealth as fast as whites. Shapiro asserts this is a continual cycle from which whites consistently benefit. Racialized employment networks can benefit whites at the expense of non-white minorities. Royster compared black and white males who graduated from the same school with the same skills. In looking at their success with school-to-work transition and working experiences, she found that white graduates were more often employed in skilled trades, earned more, held higher status positions, received more promotions and experienced shorter periods of unemployment. Since all other factors were similar, the differences in employment experiences were attributed to race. Royster concluded that the primary cause of these racial differences was due to social networking. The concept of "who you know" seemed just as important to these graduates as "what you know". According to the distinctiveness theory, posited by University of Kentucky professor Ajay Mehra and colleagues, people identify with other people who share similar characteristics which are otherwise rare in their environment; women identify more with women, whites with other whites. Because of this, Mehra finds that white males tend to be highly central in their social networks due to their numbers. According to Royster, "these ideologies provide a contemporary deathblow to working-class black men's chances of establishing a foothold in the traditional trades. This concept is similar to the theory created by Mark Granovetter which analyzes the importance of social networking and interpersonal ties with his paper "The Strength of Weak Ties" and his other economic sociology work. Other research shows that there is a correlation between a person's name and his or her likelihood of receiving a call back for a job interview. Black and Latino college graduates are less likely than white graduates to end up in a management position even when other factors such as age, experience, and academic records are similar. Cheryl Harris relates whiteness to the idea of "racialized privilege" in the article "Whiteness as Property": she describes it as "a type of status in which white racial identity provided the basis for allocating societal benefits both private and public and character". Daniel Furber and Suzanne Sherry argue that the proportion of Jews and Asians who are successful relative to the white male poses an intractable puzzle for proponents of what they call "radical multiculturism", who they say overemphasize the role of sex and race in American society. Discrimination in housing policies was formalized in under the Federal Housing Act which provided government credit to private lending for home buyers. The "single greatest source of wealth" for white Americans is the growth in value in their owner-occupied homes. The family wealth so generated is the most important contribution to wealth disparity between black and white Americans. Brown, Carnoey and Oppenheimer, in "Whitewashing Race: The Myth of a Color-Blind Society", write that the financial inequities created by discriminatory housing practices also have an ongoing effect on young black families, since the net worth of one's parents is the best predictor of one's own net worth, so discriminatory financial policies of the past contribute to race-correlated financial inequities of today. According to Stephanie Wildman and Ruth Olson, education policies in the US have contributed to the construction and reinforcement of white privilege. This can increase white students' initial educational advantage, magnifying the "unequal classroom experience of African American students" and minorities. Williams and Rivers b showed that test instructions in Standard English disadvantaged the black child and that if the language of the test is put in familiar labels without training or coaching, the child's performances on the tests increase significantly. According to Janet E. Helms traditional psychological and academic assessment is based on skills that are considered important within white, western, middle- class culture, but which may not be salient or valued within African-American culture. African Americans are disproportionately sent to special education classes in their schools, and identified as being disruptive or suffering from a learning . These students are segregated for the majority of the school day, taught by uncertified teachers, and do not receive high school diplomas. Wanda Blanchett has said that white students have consistently privileged interactions with the special education system, which provides 'non-normal' whites with the resources they need to benefit from the mainline white educational structure. Educational inequality is also a consequence of housing. Since most states determine school funding based on property taxes, [ citation needed ] schools in wealthier neighborhoods receive more funding per student. This will ensure better technology in predominantly white schools, smaller class sizes and better quality teachers, giving white students opportunities for a better education. Inequalities in wealth and housing allow a higher proportion of white parents the option to move to better school districts or afford to put their children in private schools if they do not approve of the neighborhood's schools. Some studies have claimed that minority students are less likely to be placed in honors classes, even when justified by test scores. In discussing unequal test scores between public school students, opinion columnist Matt Rosenberg laments the Seattle Public Schools' emphasis on "institutional racism" and "white privilege":. The disparity is not simply a matter of color: School District data indicate income, English-language proficiency and home stability are also important correlates to achievement By promoting the "white privilege" canard and by designing a student indoctrination plan, the Seattle School District is putting retrograde, leftist politics ahead of academics, while the perpetrators of "white privilege" are minimizing the capabilities of minorities. Conservative author Shelby Steele believes that the effects of white privilege are exaggerated, saying that blacks may incorrectly blame their personal failures on white , and that there are many "minority privileges": "If I'm a black high school student today There is a hunger in this society to do right racially, to not be racist. Anthony P. Carnevale and Jeff Strohl show that whites have a better opportunity at getting into selective schools, while African Americans and Hispanics usually end up going to open access schools and have a lower chance of receiving a bachelor's degree. In a news story, Fox News reported, "A controversial plus page manual used by the military to train its Equal Opportunity officers teaches that 'healthy, white, heterosexual, Christian' men hold an unfair advantage over other races, and warns in great detail about a so- called 'White Male Club. The manual, which was obtained by Fox News, also instructs troops to 'support the leadership of non-white people. Do this consistently, but not uncritically,' the manual states. Indigenous Australians were historically excluded from the process that lead to the federation of Australia , and the White Australia policy restricted the freedoms for non-white people, particularly with respect to immigration. Indigenous people were governed by the Aborigines Protection Board and treated as a separate underclass of non-citizens. Holly Randell-Moon has said that news media are geared towards white people and their interests and that this is an example of white privilege. Some scholars [ who? These scholars [ who? This privilege contrasts with the separation of Indigenous Australians from other in southeast Asia. White privilege varies across places and situations. Ray Minniecon, director of Crossroads Aboriginal Ministries, described the city of Sydney specifically as "the most alien and inhospitable place of all to Aboriginal culture and people". Helms traditional psychological and academic assessment is based on skills that are considered important within white, western, middle-class culture, but which may not be salient or valued within African-American culture. African Americans are disproportionately sent to special education classes in their schools, and identified as being disruptive or suffering from a learning disability. Conservative author Shelby Steele believes that the effects of white privilege are exaggerated, saying that blacks may incorrectly blame their personal failures on white oppression, and that there are many "minority privileges": "If I'm a black high school student today There is a hunger in this society to do right racially, to not be racist. Anthony P. Carnevale and Jeff Strohl show that whites have a better opportunity at getting into selective schools, while African Americans and Hispanics usually end up going to open access schools and have a lower chance of receiving a bachelor's degree. In a news story, Fox News reported, "A controversial plus page manual used by the military to train its Equal Opportunity officers teaches that 'healthy, white, heterosexual, Christian' men hold an unfair advantage over other races, and warns in great detail about a so-called 'White Male Club. The manual, which was obtained by Fox News, also instructs troops to 'support the leadership of non-white people. Do this consistently, but not uncritically,' the manual states. When the darker slaves were put in the field to work because it was a known stereotype that. The darker you are the better you deal with hard labor, while the lighter skin slaves were put into the house to deal with more intelligent and domestic labor. According to an article by ThoughCo. Slave owners were partial to light-skinned slaves because they were often family members. Even as society progressed into history towards the future, there is no doubt that it was slightly easier for a lighter skin African American. When it came to the performance industry the lighter skin African Americans had the upper hand. On popular t. On Martin, society were given two female supporting characters who happen to be friends in the show. Gina, the light-skinned one who was the main characters love interest and Pam, the darker skin best friend. Gina was seen as beautiful, classy, and the smart, charming trophy wife, while her darker skinned best friend Pam was seen as loud, mean and unattractive because of her color. This was not the only show where a darker skin character was switched out for a lighter skin person of the same race. Even in black culture today, African Americans see the lighter skin African Americans as better. Listening and watching pop culture by young African American artist today, you can see how society greatly hears rappers highlight how lighter skin and mixed raced women are more beautiful and how the darker skin black women are always angry and ugly. Research by Stanford psychologist Jennifer Eberhardt found that darker-skinned black defendants were twice as likely as lighter-skinned black defendants to get the death penalty for crimes involving white victims.
