Throughout that steady growth and change, the World War II veteran and past city councilman has always lived within the same three- block area. When Renucci was growing up, most residents worked for the Southern Pa- cific railroad, and Sparks was a fraction of the size that it is today. Taylor, Technical Services Librarian Library Bibliography Series ©Spring 2002 1 PREFACE Since 1998, Dr. Jon Michael Spencer has donated more than 1,100 books from his personal research library as well as selected journals, microfilm of historic papers and research documentation to the L. Douglas Wilder Library at Virginia Union University. The subject areas reflect his specialties in the history and theology of African-American sacred and secular music, African history and slave culture, and African-American history and sociology. The collection includes a significant number of hymnals from various denominations. The former University of Richmond music and American studies professor is now a professor of religious studies at the University of South Carolina. He earned a music degree from Hampton University and completed graduate work in music composition as well as theology at Washington University and Duke Divinity School. Spencer donated this extensive collection to VUU for several reasons. Until the summer 2000, he was a resident of Richmond and VUU was the city’s African American university. As well, VUU has a School of Theology and Spencer has published extensively in the area of religion. Finally, his architect father, John H. Spencer, participated in the design of the Wilder library. It is in the elder Spencer’s name that Dr. Spencer has donated his collections. The books are housed in the library’s closed collections.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (Hogg) Allan. He was parts manager for Atlantic Chev Olds and Wood Motors Ford, Halifax, and owned and operated Basinview Motel, Smiths Cove. He was an avid hunter and fly fisherman. He played on a provincial championship rugby and baseball team. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Andre Vilette), Lower Sackville; Janet (Mrs. David Comeau), Cornwallis; son, John and daughter-in-law Sylvia, River Bourgeois; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Belle (Minnie) MacLeod; brothers, Johnny and Alex. Visiting 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday and funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday, both in Warren T.     The Australias Are One John West guiding colonial Australia to nationhood* Patricia Fitzgerald Ratcliff OAM I acknowledge that we meet here today on the ancestral lands of the Ngunnawal people. I thank the Australian Senate for this opportunity to stand before the original emblem of Federation, created in 1851, and to introduce to you its designer, John West, as one of the true founding fathers of the Australian nation. The publisher’s statement on the dust cover of my book, The Usefulness of John West: Dissent & Difference in the Australian Colonies, published a year ago, reads: There is a chapter missing from the story of Australia. Historical writing has recognised the contributions of convicts, governors, settlers and explorers, Anglicans, Roman Catholics and Scots Presbyterians, but the influence of the dissenting middle class has received less attention.1 * This paper was presented as a lecture in the Senate Occasional Lecture Series at Parliament House on 23 July 2004. When published in Papers on Parliament No. 42 (December 2004), the illustration of the Anti-transportation League flag on p. 115 was inadvertently omitted.
