We wish to thank the many volunteers and sponsors who have so generously contributed to this program. Community support for amateur sport and minor hockey programs such as ours is invaluable. Let's all show our appreciation by supporting our sponsors whenever possible! Thank you to all the team managers, yearbook coordinators and coaches for their contributions and also to Style-Craft Printing for all their support in publishing the yearbook. Although a considerable amount of effort was spent in proofing and editing the yearbook, we do apologize for any errors or omissions. Yearbook Coordinator Michael Zubkow

A special thank you to the “Friends of the NWCAA Sponsors” and to our Major Corporate Sponsor (Mac’s) for their1 generous support of the NWCAA! As this year comes to a close, I sit back to reflect on the past year’s changes. With me PRESIDENTassuming the Presidents role,'S the ViceMESSA Presidents – Geoff SandersonGE and Joe Aiello, Treasurer – Kirk Look and Secretary – Tina Sakundiak, Past President – Ryan Lissel, we became the new executive for the association. All of us have worked uncountable hours to move the association forward. I sincerely thank these people for their support.

I would like to thank the board and its members for their continued support and volunteering the time needed to help this association. The numerous contributions from many individual’s that will make a significant impact on our association. Thank you for your time and continued participation.

Throughout the year we have continued to monitor the development of our players and coaches. With our partnership with Hockey Canada, we have moved to position specific skills training. Believing that each player that participates is given the opportunities to improve and progress with the skills and knowledge required to become better players. Coaches were invited to participate at these sessions to further enhance their knowledge of these important skills.

To the players and coaches, thanks for all your efforts on and off the ice. Our players have benefited from playing in the NWCAA and learning how to become a better person from your own efforts and sacrifice. The coaches with the countless number of hours they sacrifice to coach our children.

To the parents, without you we would not be an association. Your continued support of your player and team should not go unnoticed. I thank you for the yearlong commitment towards hockey.

A sincere Thank You to the sponsors, of all of the teams, for their support of the Norwester yearbook.

In closing, many changes are still to come, to make our association better and stronger as we move forward.

Thank you on Behalf of the Board of Directors.

NWCAA MIDGET AAA FLAMES

NWCAA Midget AAA Flames players, parents and staff collectively chose to support Kids Cancer Care this year with the of raising $30,000 which would allow 20 young children whose lives have been impacted by cancer to attend summer camp. Our 20 young men had a wonderful and rewarding experience in helping raise over $44,000 for this wonderful cause which in the end will allow 22 young children“ to FIREattend camp. ON The FlamesICE players“ – hadKIDS the opportunity HELPING to meet up andKIDS have out at a practice 6 young players from 4 families that had been impacted by cancer. From that start point the Flames worked hard to ensure they reached and surpassed their fund raising goals. Through on line donations, snow shoveling for Seniors, Bottle drives, selling donuts at school, a League game with all proceeds going to Kids Cancer Care and finally 10 of our players shaving their heads to support the Kids Cancer Care program. The result was over $44,000 raised for Kids Cancer Care and life lessons for each of our young men. Below is a clip from a letter from one of the mom’s whose 7 year old young son Mason battled and beat cancer and shared with us the impact our Midget AAA Flames team had on her son and family! 14 MAC'S CHAMPIONSHIP2016 NWCAA MIDGET AAA FLAMES

For the first time in 8 years a Calgary team won the Macs Tournament and the first time in 20 years since an NWCAA team has won it. This was the culmination of 20 players and 6 staff members focused on 1 goal to win the Mac’s; the team played with determination, grit, WIN energy, THE heart and PRESTIGIOUS passion to ensure they left nothing MACS on the table, TOUR each playerNA boughtMENT in and over delivered to ensure team success! The team went through the tournament winning 6 of 7 games, going undefeated through the playoff round and in front of 8,000 fans at the Saddledome, on live TV across Western Canada they beat the #1 ranked Lloydminster Bobcats 2 – 1 with a late third period goal in the Championship game!

Thank you for the hard work, attention and respect you brought to the ice-surface this season. Although our goals for team success laid out at the year’s beginning were not met, 2015 – 2016 Season Summary we as coaches believe that important lessons of teamwork, attitude, adaptability and pos- itive attitude were learned throughout the season. These things are not only crucial to success in hockey, but also as a member of society you will grow into beyond your hockey playing years. Whether those years end with this one just passed or you find yourself retir- ing from the NHL at age 35, those lessons will carry you forward to become a productive member of any team. Be them school projects, working with colleagues as you pursue a career, or teaching and coaching your own kids, the traits mentioned are fundamental to success in any field. We hope you continue your adventure in hockey and pursue your other passions and interests with energy and enthusiasm. We wish you all the best going forward and congratulations in advance for all of your future successes!

Going forward we wish you every in your future undertakings.

Sincerely,

29 Head Coaches: Kurt Vouri Asst Coaches: Zack Finlay, Keith Muir Goalie Coach: Tim Manuel Trainer: LucaBANTA Di Sabatino M Manager: AA Heather BR LyonsUINS NWCAA Coordinator: Anthony Polini I want to start this summary by thanking the players. Our group of young men and 1 woman were a fantastic example of what can happen when teammates come together as a team having fun and working hard to develop as hockey players and more importantly learning life lessons that will make them a positive influence in life. 2015 – 2016 Season Summary I want to extend a big thank you to the parents; this level of Hockey is a huge time and financial commitment and for first timers can be a bit of learning. We appreciate you stepping up all year long and doing whatever was asked to make this an enjoyable year. The beginning of the year started out great with the coaching staff putting together a plan that focused on Player development, FUN, Positive Conceptual self images, Compete Level awareness, Intelligent play, Team toughness, Team successes, Individual successes, 5 game segment model, Quarterly reviews and Winning. We had our plan and set our goals and we came to play, going 4-0 in exhibition. Now Life lesson #1, consistent hard work brings consistent results and we started the year not playing up to our level but playing down to other teams, going 7 losses 1 win and 1 tie for our first 10 games. This was quite the eye opener for our kids and it enabled the staff to adjust the plan and move forward in to the next ten game set with different expectations. Our practices became more about competing and winning, battling at game pace and learning how to compete. We tried different players at different positions to show case their strengths and talked at length about playing 60 minutes of competitive hockey. Life lesson #2, hard work pays off. The kids went on a winning streak. Our next 10 games showed the value of hard work and sticking to a plan and we ended up winning 7 of our next 10 games with 1 tie and 2 losses. More importantly the kids beat the first and second place teams and now understood the capabilities of the team and had a ton of fun winning and competing. Life Lesson 3, refer to lesson 1. We went the balance of the season pretty much 500 with a record of 5 wins 5 loses and 1 tie. Hard work and learning how to compete at higher levels are activities that require focus on part of the players and coaches and that focus is what helps you develop as a person and hockey player. The team now understood what it took to be a competitive team and competitive players in an elite league, Lesson learned. We are happy to say the Bruins had 3 players in the top 10 in scoring and our team showed that when down by 2 or 3 goals we had the character players to come back and win. The trait to never giving up no matter what, showed a character group of players and made the coaches proud to be a part of the team. What made the coaching staff most proud was the player development. We always use our last 2 practices not so much on whether the kids are executing the drills correctly but to evaluate the team and if we have developed over the course of the year. During a couple of our flow drills with bodies flying around the ice, passing that was tight and crisp, pucks that were pinging off of posts and cross bars we knew we had done a great job with this group and were very happy with how far we had come as a team. The hockey development was off the charts and it showed. Throughout the year we had several tournaments that we had success at and the kids bonded as a team while the parents got to know each other. We received many complements from hotel staff and rink staff stating how respectful our kids were, and the Bruins also had a chance to give back to the community by supporting the Calgary food Bank and donating time sorting and packing up food donations, well done bruins. I would like to close by thanking my staff, Zack Finlay asst coach, Keith Muir asst coach, Tim Manuel Goalie coach and Heather Lyons team manager. This team brought passion and commitment to the Bruins and without them the whole program doesn’t happen, thank you so much for the time and being total vested in the kid’s success. See you at the rink. Bantam AA Bruins coaching staff

Playing in the NWCAA at 2015the Bantam – 2016 AA level Season on the Stampeders Summary gave our players the opportunity to compete at a high level of hockey in Calgary and allowed them to improve all seasons to aspire to play at the elite level next year. The coaches not only helped these players develop their skills to become stronger individual hockey players, but they also encouraged and helped the boys become fine young men through hockey experiences and numerous life lessons. The Stampeders coaches this year helped these young men understand life and hockey skills that included; A. The importance of being a good teammate and to understand that everyone contributes and plays a role on the team B. Taking good care of themselves outside the rink (nutrition, recovery, hydration, etc.) C. How competing and hard work can bring positive results. D. The never say quit mentality and to always give it all you have, so no matter what the result you can leave carrying your head high knowing you did your best. E. Developing good habits in practices will make you a better player. This year the team had some great experiences: • The Stampeders participated fully in the NWCAA /Hockey Canada Skill Development sessions including on-ice testing and development, off-ice physical testing, monthly on-ice skill development sessions, weekly Dry land training sessions. • The team made it to the Semi-final of the Esso Minor Hockey week • The team ended the regular season on a positive note winning 7 of its last 10 regular season games to finish with a record of 15-11-4 which allowed them to finish in 5th position, only 2 points behind the 3rd position. • The Team also had a good playoff tournament, finishing 1st of their pool, and making it to the Semi-finals. The staff of the Stampeders would also like to thank the parents for being supportive of the team by volunteering their time to help the team run smooth. Most of all, the Stampeders staff want to thank these 19 young gentlemen who showed tremendous growth in both life and hockey skills. The Stampeders, and the fact they were a class act and showed class and demonstrated strong character throughout the year, and we are confident they will forge ahead next year carrying the skills they learnt this season. All the best gentlemen both in hockey and wherever life takes you!

Sincerely,

39 Head Coach: Mike Tschumi Asst Coaches: Sean Kibyuk, Kyle Severson & Kevin Keenan GoalieBANTA Coach: Nolan StillM Trainer: AAA Kristina FLA FraserM ES Manager: Susanne Smith NWCAA Coordinator: Troy Tendeck We entered the September evaluation process with plenty of experience within the NWCAA as coaches, and drafted, and ultimately chose the best team available based on 2015 – 2016 Season Summary tryout performances.

A local preseason tournament allowed our leadership group to quickly step to the forefront, and the team to begin bonding as a group. The season began with a lot of potential that translated into an eye opening participation in the Chilliwack tournament where we faced stiff competition from some of the best teams in Western Canada, and proved to ourselves that we could compete with them when firing on all cylinders.

The season brought the normal ebb and flow, successes and learning opportunities that every hockey season tends to present. The boys grew as a team, and improved as individuals through their relentless commitment to hard work, effort, execution and team play.

Our first playoff round unfortunately was not as successful as anticipated, as the team was peaking as planned, coming into the post season. We ended the season with an overtime loss in the deciding game of the series, one that we could have, should have, won, by all accounts, with a little more luck on our side.

The coaching staff would like to thank the team for their commitment, dedication and hard work throughout the season, and wish everyone success in both their athletic and scholastic pursuits in the future.

Who Dares, Wins.

Coach Mike

My message year over year remains the same, as Coaches we enter each season with the objective to create an environment that fosters learning and development, and again this year was no different. An environment, in which each player develops and contributes to the best of their individual ability, holds themselves accountable to it, appreciates and understands the importance of team play, all while gaining a deeper understanding for the game itself. This results from ongoing personal development and team development, through off ice training, on ice practice, league games, tournament play, and coaching throughout. It takes commitment, dedication, hard work, and passion for continued personal development and to successfully play at the Minor Midget AAA level. Hockey is a great game and year after year the AMMHL has proven to be an elite and extremely competitive league. This year was no exception.

For the players, this year’s measure of success was again summed up by John Wooden, arguably one of the greatest sport coaches in history; “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.“ - All it takes is all you’ve got.

As with every season this one will fade into a distant memory along with the individual statistics, and the different wins & losses. With time it’s hoped that the season will be remembered for the life lessons and individual maturing as a result of personal effort, selfless commitment to one another, and the dedication to personal betterment as hockey players and young adults.

Thanks for a fantastic year, & for another year of great coaching memories!

The Coaches … Terry Sydoryk, Spencer Woltz and Travis McMillan

What a year it was. We had a tough start to the season, sitting in last place in early November. However, through hard work and early morning hill running we bonded as a group and were able to climb to a 7th place finish2015 in the – regular2016 season, Season securing Summary a spot in the Sutter Cup tournament.

We started off playing some of our best hockey in the first few games of the Sutter Cup South, finishing in first place in the round robin portion of the tournament. Unfortunately, we were not able to keep our streak alive, losing in the semifinal game and finishing fourth in the tournament. Thanks to some outstanding parent volunteer efforts, we were fortunate to host the Provincial tournament. The 5 days was a great experience for our team, competing against all of the top teams in the province. We started the tournament off with a big win and would eventually find ourselves falling short in the semifinal game with a fourth place finish follow in the bronze medal game.

The coaching staff would like to thank all of the players for their perseverance throughout the season. It was an impressive turnaround from the beginning to the end of the year and it would not have been possible without the relentless effort and determination of the players. We would like to thank the parents for the countless hours of volunteer work that went into the Provincial tournament. It was a very professional event and it would not have been possible without your efforts. Our hats are off to each and every one of you. In closing, we hope the players can take the experience of this season and transition the learnings into continued success in all paths ahead. Your Minor Midget coaching staff has seen a lot through our years of coaching, your journey this year has taught us all a lesson in perseverance and belief in the system.

“Griffy has seen it all, Mails has done it all, and Serpico has eaten it all”

Have a great summer and prepare well for the fall…

54 Head Coach: Roland Bishop Asst Coaches: Phil Wood, Russ Dickson & Garrett Hughes MIDGETTrainer: Karina AA Bakke rBR Manager:UI KeithNS Templeton NWCAA Coordinator: Geoff Sanderson Thank you to all the players and parents for your contributions to a fun and rewarding season. The player’s strong work ethic throughout the season paid off in the end with an outstanding playoff performance and with many memories made and many lessons learned along the way. There were both hockey2015 and life –lessons 2016 learned Season as we worked Summary game by game to become a more effective team. Every individual at times made outstanding contributions to success and at other times made mistakes to learn from. Overall our team game improved steadily in all zones on both offense and defense. The line combinations were juggled from time to time, particularly in the first half of the season, with everyone getting know each other’s strengths and weaknesses as we searched for stronger team chemistry. By mid-season, everyone’s tendencies were well known to the group and we experimented with different kill and power play units. Not all players were pleased with their roles at first and did not hesitate to express these views; however, over time, roles were accepted and the overall team play was better for it. There was a wide mix of skills on this team with both gritty defensive players and highly skilled offensive players. It became clear as the season unfolded that the full spectrum of talent was needed to be successful as a team in this league. The league was very competitive and there were no easy games. Focus, discipline and hard work were needed every game and the lack of any of these generally resulted in a loss. Early in the season, emotions got the better of us on many occasions and we soon became one of the most penalized teams in the league; however as the season progressed we became much more disciplined in controlling emotions and this helped to reduce penalties and also helped to improve positional play. We found a team identity which combined a “tough to play against” defensive style (both in the defensive zone and on the fore check) with a strong transition to offense which made this a very exciting team to watch. The style and quality of play achieved by this team near season’s end was an excellent achievement and something that you should all be proud of. Congratulations on a great season and all the best to you in the coming years both in hockey and in life.

Sincerely, Roland Bishop, Phil Wood, Russ Dickson, Garrett Hughes, Karina Bakker

Once again, we are faced with the bittersweet ending of our time together. It is bitter to walk away from a team that has become a close unit, but sweet to see all the personal and team growth we have made 2015in our six – months 2016 together. Season Summary From the first parent meeting at the beginning of the year, to the mid-season parent meeting and final day of the season, our coaches continued to put together practice and game plans for the players to the best of their abilities and knowledge. We implemented team building, fun/hard practices and team and individual goals, went on road trips and had an excellent tournament. Throughout the season we were able to find the right team chemistry to win consistently. Fortunately we had many good players ready to work hard and develop as much as they could during the season, and this is what allowed us to make it all the way to City Finals. On a very positive note, with all the ups and downs throughout the season, we persevered, worked harder and learned that success is not only where we finished this time around but it is where we are going next. I implore you, as always, to be safe, make wise choices and decisions, respect people, explore your world, get to know others’ stories and remember what we learned this year.

Regards,

Marc-Alain Tremblay

64 Head Coach: Darren Halasz Asst Coaches: Brad Hunt & Travis Churchman MIDGETGoalie Coach: AAA Robin Mc CFoll LA Trainer:MES Randy Kuefler Manager: Fred Hunt Wow what a year for this collectionNWCAA of fine young Coordinator: gentleman and hockey players! The staff of the Flames Midget AAA team is very proud of these 20 young gentlemen who have had suchSteve a successful Suto and learning year! The key off ice success this year was our player’s enthusiasm, respect, growth, understanding and willingness to help out those who are in a less fortunate position than the players themselves. The Flames chose to support Kids Cancer Care this year and what a wonderful2015 experience – 2016 this was Season for everyone Summaryon the team. All 20 players made full contributions to helping raise over $43,000 through a variety of ways, including shoveling snow for seniors, selling donuts at school, collecting bottles, numerous tv spots, newspaper articles and having on line donations set up under each player where all 20 of our players had support as part of the on line donation program. To top it off 10 of our players shaved their heads in support of Kids Cancer Care! A great result of our team’s charitable support of KCC was the friendship and bonding that started between our team and little Mason, his mom and dad Jenn and Diego and his older brother Bennett. Mason became our teams good luck charm and became our team’s biggest fan as we went through the last half of the season and the playoffs! Thank you Mason! The Flames did not stop there as they also contributed by volunteering at the Calgary Drop in Center, where they served lunch to Calgary’s less fortunate, and also helped young children around the world by donating and helping pack up over 2,500 gift boxes for Samaritans Purse at Christmas. Our on ice success was equally as impressive as the outstanding job they did off the ice: • For the first time in 20 years the NWCAA Midget AAA Flames won the prestigious Macs Tournament • For the first time in 10 years the Flames finished in first place in the AMHL South Division • For only the second time in the last 10 years the Flames made it to the South Final • The Flames were the highest scoring team in the AMHL with 5 players in the top 50 of League scoring All of these accomplishments started at the beginning of the year as all 20 individual players understood and bought into the Team concept. The coaches and team established team goals for the year that helped guide the team on playing as one unit. This resulted in tremendous team success. A great example of this is the Flames won the Macs Tournament but did not win one individual award or receive any All Star nominations at the Macs Tournament, just the ultimate team prize. Playing Midget AAA with the Flames gave our players the opportunity to compete at the top level of hockey in Alberta for their age group, something that each and every one of our players should be very proud of. The coaches helped these players develop their skills as individual hockey players and in becoming the TOP Midget team in Calgary and Southern Alberta. They also encouraged and helped the boys become fine young men through hockey experiences and life lessons. The Flames coaches helped these young men understand life skills that included; A. Importance of commitment B. Having strong character to always carry yourself in a positive and helpful manner C. Dedication to your self and the others around you D. Goal setting and how difficult it is at times to achieve those goals, but never losing sight of the goal and always working your hardest to achieve your goals. E. The importance of being a great team member and understanding that everyone contributes and plays a role on the team F. How vital it is to believe in the team aspect to ensure that everyone is focused on the end goal, to understand you don’t always reach your final goal but ensuring you are taking pride in the successes you had along the way to striving to accomplish the goals G. The never say quit mentality and to always give it all you have, no matter what the result, you can leave carrying your head high knowing you did your best H. Taking pride in your accomplishments and celebrating those accomplishments. The staff of the Flames would also like to thank the fantastic Flames parent group for being supportive of the team from the beginning to the final game in the Southern Alberta Final. This group of parents believed in this team and every one of the families pitched in to ensure this season was a success for the players! Most of all, the Flames staff want to thank these 20 young gentlemen who showed such tremendous growth over the hockey season both on and off the ice. Our parents can be very proud of their young man and what they contributed to the team this year. Our boys showed this through their on ice successes as well as their off ice success with Kids Cancer Care Our staff wishes the players all the best in their next life adventure, at the rink or wherever their journey leads them! Thanks for a great year Flames!! Darren, Brad, Travis, Robin and Fred

69 Head Coach: Kevin Plysiuk Asst Coaches: Chris Weston & Leslie Reddon Trainer: DianeJUN DieikanIOR Manager: B KevinBR PlysiukUINS NWCAA Coordinator: Randy Bergmann The Junior B Bruins embarked on another season looking to make the playoffs after just missing out last year. With returning veterans Lucas Scoville, Ryan Woodhouse and Trevor Pickett, the team looked2015 like contenders - 2016 Season from the beginning. Summary The season started with a competitive training camp which saw many new faces join the Bruins roster. The Bruins were led by leading scorer Kurtis Woodhouse, younger brother of veteran defenseman Ryan Woodhouse. Kurtis led the team with 38 points in 29 games and consistently gave the opposing team fits, leading the team in penalty minutes with 80. Scoville, a graduating player, was the captain of this year’s team, leading the young crop of defenseman, who were the majority of the time forwards asked to help out on D. Even with the inexperience on the back end, the Bruins ended up 3rd in goals against in the entire league. The Bruins also got a welcomed addition from alumnus Chris Weston who stepped on the Bruins bench to help guide and lead the players, filling in as Head Coach when the time permitted. Weston has grown as a coach and looks forward to next year building on the skill and determination shown by the players this season. The Bruins had some key injuries occur over the course of the season in rookie defenseman Adam Scoville and agitator Mike Szoke. Both players were forced to miss significant time due to injury but will look ahead to the future to come back and play next year healthy. Although the playoff dream did not come to fortune, the Bruins, despite their slow start, had a successful year and the staff would like to thank the players and their supportive parents this season in their hard work to make this season great. Most of all, the Bruins staff want to thank these young gentlemen who showed tremendous growth in both life and hockey skills, and the fact they attended University or worked full time while making the commitment to the game, the NWCAA and each other shows how much character we had. All the best gentlemen both in hockey and wherever life takes you! Kevin Plysiuk & the Bruins Coaching Staff

This hockey season was a great rebuilding year for our team. Over half of our roster was new to Jr. B and some even new to the NWCAA. Our team faced a lot of diversity but was able to stick together even though we fell short of our goal of making the playoffs. In a season with more lows2015 than highs,– 2016 it was Season encouraging Summary to see a new team core develop of our veterans and rookies. Looking forward to next year we are very excited to have a stronger more developed core returning. As a coaching staff, we entered the preseason evaluation process with a definite vision of the type of team we wanted to draft. Our rookies soon learned the hard hitting, fast paced game that our league has become. Throughout the first few months of the season we had more veteran players return from Junior A tryouts to help fill out our roster. I believe that the leadership core of our team has done a great job keeping everyone together and bridging the gap between 1st and 4th year players. I have faith our young team will return more confident and ready to win next season. Our team sent 3 Players and 1 Goalie to our annual Junior B all-star game. The boys represented the Stamps very well and had a great time. This team was a very tight knit and fun group to be around. As in previous years we played our annual alumni game that brought back old faces to remember the family who have come and gone before us. We look forward to our graduating players returning next year to play for us coaches in this annual game. Although our hard work in practice didn't translate to success in our games our guys continued to power through and build as more than teammates, they grew as a family. Families may bicker and have differences in opinion from time to time but they all want what is best for everyone as a whole. Not a selfish bone in this team's body. To those Midget players graduating this year, the Junior B program is a great place to continue to play competitive hockey next season. To our returning players, we are excited to have you back next year and continue to build you into the best hockey player you can be. Go Stamps Go! Glenn, Nick, Braden
