In October, Pharmacists Manitoba President, Pawandeep Sidhu gave Minister Friesen his flu shot at the government press conference promoting flu shots. Later that month we held a reception for MLAs at the Manitoba Legislature in collaboration with CPhA Board of Directors and Executive Staff. CEO, Brenna Shearer and President, Pawandeep Sidhu, were invited to the re-elected PC government’s Speech from the Throne in November, where the government affirmed commitment to pay for pharmacists to prescribe medication for uncomplicated UTIs. Throughout the year Pharmacists Manitoba received media coverage on a variety of topics including opioids, drug imports to the US, and the PCs election commitment to pay pharmacists to prescribe for uncomplicated UTIs. Pharmacists Manitoba will continue to build our relationship with the Manitoba government and to advocate on behalf of our members. We look forward to continuing to work with the government to improve our province’s healthcare system and to promoting the skills of pharmacists as a way to provide accessible and timely health care. COLLEGE OF PHARMACY SPEP-1 PROJECT: MEANINGFUL MENTORSHIP

First year pharmacy students Marianna Pozdirca, Christine Vaccaro, Heather Smeltzer, and Sabina Ozog created a survey for their SPEP1 project under the supervision of Pharmacists Manitoba. The survey was conducted to identify best practices and pitfalls in mentorship programs for Pharmacists Manitoba and the College of Pharmacy, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba. The survey was sent to twenty-three mentorship programs (including non-pharmacy) in Canada, USA and Australia. The results indicated common challenges such as finding the time for mentors and mentees to interact with each other, as well as current practices in mentor/mentee matching and training. Overall, it is evident that a student/pharmacist mentorship program in Manitoba would be an invaluable resource and beneficial to both students in training and practicing pharmacists in Manitoba.
