General Characteristics of the District Kishanganj district is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar state, India, and Kishanganj town is the administrative headquarters of this district. Kishanganj district is a part of Purnia division. During the period of Khagada Nawab, Mohammed Fakiruddin, one Hindu saint arrived , he was tired and wanted to rest at this place, but when he heard that this place name is Alamganj ,the river name is Ramzan and the Jamindar name is Fakiruddin , he refused to enter at Alamganj. After that the Nawab decided and announced some portion from Kishanganj Gudri to Ramzan pool gandhi ghat as Krishna-Kunj . As time passed by the name gets converted to present KISHANGANJ Kishanganj was the old and important Sub- Division of Purnia district. After the long and hard struggle of Seventeen Years from people of Kishanganj including Social Workers, politicians, journalist, businessman’s, Farmers Page 3 of 23 KISHANGANJ- DISTRICT INDUSTRIAL POTENTIAL SURVEY etc., the Kishanganj District came into existence on 14 January 1990. During the Mughal period, the area was part of Nepal and was called Nepalgarh. When on the instructions of the Mughal emperor, Mohammed Reza captured the fort at Nepalgarh, the name was changed to Alamganj. It later became Kishanganj 1.1 Location & Geographical Area. Page 4 of 23 KISHANGANJ- DISTRICT INDUSTRIAL POTENTIAL SURVEY Kishanganj district occupies an area of 1,884 square kilometres (727 sq mi), comparatively equivalent to Maui in the United States. Kishanganj district is surrounded by Araria district in the west, Purnia district in the south-west, Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal on the east, and Darjeeling district of West Bengal and Nepal on the north. A narrow strip of West Bengal, about 20 km wide separates it from Bangladesh. Kishanganj district is located between 250 20’ and 260 30’ north latitudes, and 870 7’ and 880 19’ east longitudes. Major rivers flowing through the district are Mahananda, Kankai, Mechi, Donk, Ratua and Ramzan Sudhani. 1.2Topography. Page 5 of 23 KISHANGANJ- DISTRICT INDUSTRIAL POTENTIAL SURVEY Soil of the district Kishanganj is light, sandy loam to loam and its physical range is 5.8 to 8.0( mostly natural soil but some are slightly acidic and some saline ). The nutrient status in soil is low to medium with defiency of zinc and phosphorous pentoxide. In Kishanganj two types of mineral are found –silica and iron. The forest area of the district is mainly situated in two block of Thakurganj & Terhagach.     CHAPTER - IX ENVIRONMENT IMPACT ASSESSMENT AND SOCIO ECONOMIC STUDIES 9.0 Objectives of the study The objective of environmental impact assessment and socio- economic studies is to identify the possible environmental and socio- economic effects due to the proposed Kosi-Mechi intrastate link project of Bihar and to suggest measures to mitigate or ameliorate the anticipated adverse impacts on the environment. The study was assigned to M/s Economic Development Trust (EDT), New Delhi. A brief account of the study is presented in this chapter. 9.1 The project proposal The Kosi-Mechi intrastate link project envisages diversion of 7,825 MCM of Kosi water from existing Hanuman Nagar Barrage on Indo-Nepal border to Mechi river (a tributary of Mahananda) about 1.5 km upstream of its confluence with Mahananda river in Makhanpur village of Kishanganj district of Bihar state. The proposed link canal offtakes from the left side (eastern side) of the barrage near Hanuman Nagar at FSL 74.371 m and outfalls into Mechi river at FSL 54.239 m. The total length of the link canal is 117.50 km. This link canal will cross number of streams/rivers, road and railway lines for which 9 canal syphons, 14 syphon aqueducts, 42 road bridges and 9 hume pipe culverts have been proposed. 28 head regulators, 10 cross regulators and 3 escapes have also been provided for the link canal regulation. 9.2 Project justification Bihar is India's most flood‐prone state, with about 76% of the population in north Bihar living under the recurring threat of flood devastation.

    DISTRICT PROFILE KISHANGANJ INTRODUCTION Kishanganj district is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar. Kishanganj district is a part of Purnea division. Kishanganj is situated in the northeastern part of Bihar and is is part of the chicken neck on the map of India. Kishanganj has an international border with Nepal and a narrow strip of 20 km land of West Bengal separates Kishanganj district from Bangladesh. Kishanganj district is surrounded by the districts of Araria and Purnea of Bihar, districts of Uttar Dinajpur and Darjeeling of West Bengal and Nepal in the north. The important rivers flowing from the district are Mahananda, Kankai, Mechi, Doictnk, Ratua, Ramzan and Sudhani. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Kishanganj is the distortion of the name Krishna-Kunj. During the Mughal period, Kishanganj district was the part of Nepal and was known as Nepalgarh. Nepalgarh was captured during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam and renamed as Alamganj in his honour. Khagara was made the administrative headquarters and the historical "Khagra Mela" is held here every year. During the Mughal rule under Nawab Mohammed Fakiruddin, a wandering Hindu saint refused to enter Amanganj despite being very tired because the names of the place, river and Nawab were Alamganj, Ramzan and Fakiruddin respectively. When the Nawab heard this grievance of the itinerant saint, he announced that some portion of land would be renamed as Krishna-Kunj. With passage of time, the name Krishna-Kunj got distorted to Kishanganj. Kishanganj was earlier an important sub-division of the erstwhile Purnea district and became an independent district on 14th January 1990.

Present Original Research Article objective is to study the urinary risk factors in urolithiasis patients from Purnia division of Bihar (India). The study would lead to an understanding of the various metabolic *Corresponding author abnormalities leading to urinary stone formation in this region. Twenty four hour T.V.R.K. Rao urinary calcium, magnesium, oxalate, phosphate, uric acid and citrate were estimated in 100 urolithiasis patients (66 males & 34 females) in the age group of 18-55 yrs. Fifty Article History normal healthy persons (30 males & 20 females) in the age group of 20-55 yrs, who Received: 01.08.2018 served as controls, were also studied for the above urinary parameters. Results revealed Accepted: 05.08.2018 that hypercalciuria, hyperoxaluria and hypocitraturia are the main risk factors of Published: 30.08.2018 urolithiasis in the region. Hyperuricosuria, hypophosphaturia and hypomagnesuria also showed up as marginal risk factors in the urinary stone patients. TEL: 0651-2241509 1 2 PREFACE Following the completion of the first phase of the social assessment study and its sharing with the BRLP and World Bank team, on February 1, 2007 consultation at the BRLP office, we picked up the feedback and observations to be used for the second phase of study covering three more districts of Purnia, Muzaffarpur and Madhubani. Happily, the findings of the first phase of the study covering Nalanada,Gaya and Khagaria were widely appreciated and we decided to use the same approach and tools for the second phase as was used for the first phase. As per the ToR a detailed Tribal Development Project (TDP) was mandated for the district with substantial tribal population. Purnia happens to be the only district, among the three short listed districts, with substantial tribal (Santhal) population. Accordingly, we undertook and completed a TDP and shared the same with BRLP and the World Bank expert Ms.Vara Lakshnmi. The TDP was minutely analyzed and discussed with Vara, Archana and the ADRI team. Subsequently, the electronic version of the TDP has been finalized and submitted to Ms.Vara Lakshmi for expediting the processing of the same.
