Making her cabaret debut, Malone will salute 14 of her favorite Broadway actresses who have been an influence on her during her musical theatre career. The audience will hear selections made famous by Fanny Brice, Carol Burnett, Betty Buckley, Carol Channing, Judy Holliday, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Elaine Stritch, and Nancy Walker. On making her cabaret debut: “The idea of putting together an original cabaret act where you’re standing on stage for ninety minutes straight has always sounded daunting to me,” Malone said. “I’ve had the idea for this particular cabaret format for a few years. I felt the time was right to challenge myself, and I couldn’t be more proud to debut this cabaret on the very stage that offered me my first musical theatre experience as a nine-year-old in the Moonlight’s very first musical Oliver! directed by Kathy Brombacher.” Malone can relate to the fact that the leading ladies she has chosen to celebrate are all attached to iconic comedic roles. “I learned at a very young age that getting laughs is golden,” she said.

Goodman Theatre announces it will produce the world premiere of War Paint, a new musical that charts the ascent and arch-rivalry of cosmetics entrepreneurs Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. Patti LuPone, who “generates more raw excitement than any other performer on Broadway” (The New York Times), and Christine Ebersole, a “first-class, revitalizing master of period style” (The New York Times), respectively star as Rubinstein and Arden, the brilliant innovators with humble roots who shrewdly navigated the 1930s male-dominated business world to forever change the business of beauty. Directed by Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal, If/Then, Grey Gardens), War Paint reunites Scott Frankel and Michael Korie—the acclaimed composer and lyricist team of Grey Gardens and Far From Heaven—with Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright (Grey Gardens, I Am My Own Wife, The Little Mermaid). • Two Legends – One Musical
TWO LEGENDS – ONE MUSICAL Two time Tony Award® winners Patti LuPone (Evita, Gypsy) and Christine Ebersole (42nd Street, Grey Gardens) star as Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden, respectively, trendsetters in the beauty industry a century ago. Along with Tony nominees John Dossett (Gypsy, Newsies) and Douglas Sills (The Scarlet Pimpernel), the stars reprise their roles following their sold-out engagement in Chicago. WAR PAINT tells the amazing story of these two cosmetics pioneers, both of whom were self-inventors who became the country’s first major female entrepreneurs. They were also brutal competitors, whose lengthy “tug-of-war would give birth to an industry that would forever change the face of America. From Fifth Avenue society to the halls of Congress, their intense rivalry was ruthless, relentless and legendary—pushing both women to build international empires in a world dominated by men.” Inspired by the book, War Paint, by Lindy Woodhead, and the documentary film, The Powder & the Glory, the musical is directed by Tony nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Grey Gardens) and choreographed by Tony winner Christopher Gattelli (The King and I, Newsies). It reunites Scott Frankel and Michael Korie, the composer and lyricist team of Grey Gardens, with Tony Award® and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright (Grey Gardens, I Am My Own Wife). TWO 'WOMEN ON THE VERGE': (left to right) Patti LuPone & Sherie Rene Scott in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Photo: Paul Kolnik Theater Review Stage adaptation of classic Pedro Almodóvar film is musical On the Verge of collapsing through its countless flaws Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown Based on the film by Pedro Almodóvar Book by Jeffrey Lane Music & lyrics by David Yazbek Choreography by Christopher Gattelli Directed by Bartlett Sher Belasco Theatre 111 West 44th Street (212-239-6200), www.lct.org By Scott Harrah Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar's classic 1988 farce, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, may, on paper, have seemed like perfect subject matter for a Broadway musical adaptation. Its wacky plot and over-the-top characters made the film such a delight (some argue that Women on the Verge is Almodóvar's best work), but for some reason, as a Broadway musical, it fails on so many levels. This production seemed to have everything going for it: big-name, Tony-winning Broadway stars such as Patti LuPone, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Laura Benanti, as well as multiple Tony nominees Sherie Rene Scott and Danny Burstein, among others; music and lyrics by David Yazbek (of Full Monty and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels fame), with Bartlett Sher as director (Sher recently directed the superb Lincoln Center revival of South Pacific). With such theatrical pedigree behind the show, one wonders why the musical simply does not work? Book writer Jeffrey Lane follows Almodóvar's far-fetched, complicated plot quite closely, but the frantic storyline is hardly the problem.
