The spotlight shines; giddy music director Paul Shaffer thrusts his arm in the air and, with a burst of exag- geration, signals for you to start. From behind a nearby desk, David Letterman is watching. Seated in front of their televisions, millions of people are listening. This Friday, Art Alexakis will become one of the few Portland musicians ever to experience this sensation when his band, Ever- clear, plays The Late Show with David Letterman. And, for the 34-year-old singer and guitarist, along with his mid-20s band- mates Craig Montoya and Greg Eklund, it's another step toward the highest echelon in the music world. Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc.

  • Elliott Smith Dead at  by Will Bryant
Pitchfork | http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/03-10/22.shtml 22 October 2003 Elliott Smith Dead at by Will Bryant Elliott Smith has died at age , according to an obituary posted late Tuesday on Sweet Adeline, Smith’s official website. Rumors had been circulating on the Internet yesterday afternoon about Smith’s apparent suicide; by early evening, the overwhelm- ing traffic from well-wishers and fans was crashing Sweet Adeline’s discussion board. A handful of posts indicated that representatives from Smith’s label, Dreamworks, were attempting to contact Charlie Ramirez, the webmaster for Sweet Adeline. Within hours, Ramirez posted the following: “As you probably realize, I’m pretty devastated about having to say goodbye to Elliott. it’s never easy to put into words what someone means to you. Elliott was such a lovely man. I will always have his love, kindness, intelligence, humbleness, creativeness, greatness and so much more in me forever because that’s what he was and i’ll always love him for being who he was. I’ll miss you so much. We will all miss you. See you in heaven, Elliott.” Kill Rock Stars, who released Smith’s self-titled solo album and ’s Either/Or, changed their website’s splash page to a pensive photo of Smith this afternoon in silent tribute to the beloved songwriter. “We are deeply saddened by Elliott Smith’s tragic death and send our condolences to his friends and family,” read a statement released by Dreamworks and reported by Reuters’ wire service. “He was perhaps his generation’s most gifted songwriter.

“Can I Get a Witness": Musicians Performing Politics in the U.S. Congress Published on Ethnomusicology Review (https://ethnomusicologyreview.ucla.edu) “Can I Get a Witness": Musicians Performing Politics in the U.S. Congress By Alexandra Apolloni, Matthew D. Atkinson, and Darin DeWitt Abstract: In this paper, we use both interpretive methods from ethnomusicology, musicology and performance studies, and empirical methods from the social sciences, to examine the performative nature and political influence of testimonies by high-profile or celebrity musicians at hearings in the United States Congress. We argue that in testifying, musicians can both influence politics and engage in a very public performance of self, one that contributes to audience acceptance of the credibility and authenticity of their musical performances. The purported truthfulness of their testimony also raises ethical dimensions. We ask: if testifying entails giving voice to truth, whose truths do these testimonies give voice to, and whose do they silence? To explore this question, we first ask how musicians’ testimonies create meaning as performances of self that might shape how people hear music. Then, we ask how these performances both give voice and create silences—first, by considering how they position music vis-à-vis attitudes about the political process and U.S. exceptionalism; and second, by asking how musician testimonies relate to power dynamics within the U.S. popular music industry. We then offer a theoretical model that outlines the likely consequences of musician participation in the political process, and finally, we evaluate empirical implications of our model, which suggest that musician participation makes a measurable impact on public perception of a musician’s persona or star text.
