I was 16 years old when I decided it was time to seek help. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression for as long as I can remember, but I just always found a way to smile and push it aside, even as a child. My honor grades, many extracurricular activities and general bubbliness in school were a facade for how I was really feeling. While I was (and still am) an openly hardworking, loving and compassionate girl, I was strategic about hiding my struggles. Depression and anxiety forcefully smashed into my world between my sophomore and junior years of high school. I was grieving from loss of family, losing friends and feeling the pressure to be “perfect.” I lost motivation for everything. I lashed out at my loved ones and I was having episodes of anxiety on the daily. It was time to admit that I needed to open up. Looking back, I ask myself why I didn’t get help sooner? The thoughts I was having were almost parasitic; they just leeched off everything. Why did I let it get to that point? In a 2014 survey conducted by TIME Magazine, “Sixty-five percent of people with symptoms of depression were not getting help from a mental health professional.” Rejection is one of the scariest things, in my opinion. I think that’s a big reason people who struggle with mental health don’t seek help. It’s the thought of, “if they reject us, who else will accept us?” Personally, I was scared about what everyone else would think if they found out. I didn’t want anyone to see me as “broken” or different. I wanted my parents to still be proud of me. I didn’t want to let anyone down. I didn’t want to be labeled. The social stigma against mental health is that if you struggle with it, you are automatically seen as “psychotic.” It isn’t that way. I think the best things our society can do are to look at mental health with the same compassion as physical health. Mental illnesses are just as serious as any other health issue. We need to encourage one another to use resources available and inform each other about mental health as a whole. While preparing for this piece (it took a lot of courage to write), I talked to some brave college students who were so open and shared their stories with me. Some had strong support systems and sought help as soon as possible, but others were afraid to. I’ve found that one of the best medicines is finding people to connect with who have had the same experiences as you. It really puts into perspective how “human” we are; you don’t really know when someone is struggling. We shouldn’t wait until Mental Health Awareness Month to bring up mental illness. It happens everyday to billions of people. It could be happening to the person next to you right now. Graphic: Dakota Palmer If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, don’t be afraid to seek the proper Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.
