He spent 66 years in service to his country, practically until his death. He was born in Poland in 1923, and emigrated to Palestine at the age of 12, before the Holocaust. Ben-Gurion brought him into the inner circle in 1947, where he held a decisive position in building the Israeli army. In 1953, Ben-Gurion appointed him General Director of the Ministry of Defense. In that position, with the help of France, he modernized the army with the newest weapons. Within this relationship, the legendary nuclear center in Dimona was developed. He was elected to Parliament in 1959, and Ben-Gurion appointed him Assistant Minister of Defense. If Peres had simply been a man of war, then he would not have risen to such a high level of international distinction, and there wouldn’t have been so many important heads of state at his funeral. Peres once stated in an interview, “I changed, because the situation changed. When I thought that Israel was in danger, I saw it as my duty to strengthen my country. That wasn’t optional; it had to be done. I changed when I saw that we could move toward peace. War is a neces - sity; peace is a goal.” He spent many of his early years making Israel strong, so that it could prevail in its wars. As Defense Minister in 1974, he was considered a hawk in the Israeli cabinet. He was prejudiced against territorial compromises and was decidedly opposed to a Palestinian state. He favored settlements, because they were the roots and the eyes of Israel. Settlements from Sinai to the Jordan Valley, he stated then, would protect the borders against attacks and fortify Jerusalem. As Defense Minister, he didn’t simply favor settlements along the borders. In the beginning, he even encouraged and supported settlements in Samaria. After the 1984 elections, Peres was popular and loved as president in 4 NEWS FROM ISRAEL Editor’s Note the national coalition government that formed then. When the country experienced 415% inflation, he saved the country from bankruptcy and led it to stability, growth and wealth with budgetary cutbacks. Peres was in a position to become the national savior. Carried away by his enormous popularity, the man who once built set - tlements steered toward his new goal, namely peace. It was a decision that cost him every bit of his hard-won popularity. He first attempted to secretly negotiate a peace deal with King Hussein of Jordan, which would have included the Palestinian areas. King Hussein pulled out of the deal, however, because Jordan was not interested in a relationship with the West Bank. After that, Peres lost the election in 1988 and, consequently, he also lost the chairmanship of the Labor Party to Yitzhak Rabin. The Oslo Treaty with the Palestinians and the wave of terror from the first Intifada led to an even further decline in his popularity. Although he jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize with Arafat and Rabin, he lost the 1996 election as Prime Minister against Benjamin Netanyahu. His greatest defeat was perhaps the loss of the presidential election against Moshe Katsav in the year 2000. That changed, however, when he was elected President in 2007, at the age of 84, for a period of seven years. Reconciled with himself and his former opponents, he was honored by everyone and recognized as “the Last Mohican” of the Zionist revolu - tion, and as Israel’s collective “grandfather.” In the end, Peres got what he had earned but had for so long eluded him: recognition, but above all, the love of the people. Biblically speaking, he was a tool in God’s plan to revive Israel.     ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

    748 JOURNAL OF APPLIED METEOROLOGY VOLUME 36 Rainfall Anomaly over the Lee Side of Mount Carmel (Israel) and the Associated Wind Field YAIR GOLDREICH AND ARIEL FREUNDLICH Department of Geography, Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel PINHAS ALPERT Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel (Manuscript received 25 September 1995, in ®nal form 17 October 1996) ABSTRACT Yagur and other rain gauge stations located on the lee side of Mount Carmel in Israel experience much higher amounts of precipitation than those measured on the windward side of the mountain at a similar altitude and more rain than stations on the mountain itself. This phenomenon is consistently observed, and in the current study it is investigated primarily by means of simultaneous rain±wind observations and by using a two-dimen- sional simpli®ed orographic model. Orographic model simulations suggest the existence of a ¯ow disturbance at the lee of Mount Carmel, which might cause local rain enhancement. Results from the anemograph placed at Yagur, along with other wind measurements in the Carmel region, support the ®ndings of this model. Ob- servations depict the disturbed ¯ow that occurred at the lee of Mount Carmel and was associated with rain enhancement. The channeled ¯ow caused horizontal convergence, which is in accordance with the second hypothesis. Observations during the rainy periods indicate that the rain enhancement in Yagur is associated with the ridge-parallel ¯ow on the lee side of the mountain. It is hypothesized that the horizontal convergence of the leeside ¯ow with the ¯ow over the mountain causes the local enhancement of precipitation.

(“EnGlobe”) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded by the State of Israel an environmental service contract valued at over 40 million dollars for the rehabilitation of the Kishon River located in the Haifa Bay in Israel. The contract, estimated to take 36 months, consists of providing to the Israeli authorities, represented by the Kishon Drainage & Rivers Authority and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the services of its Biogénie division to decontaminate over 7 km of the Kishon River, which has its source west of the Galilee and flows into Haifa Bay. With its biotreatment technology (Biopile) developed and improved over the last 30 years, EnGlobe and its Biogénie division will have the responsibility of decontaminating over half a million cubic meters of sediments, in addition to supervising the construction of the future recreational and ecological park that will benefit to all Haifa residents and the surroundings. At the end of the project, more than 220,000 million shekels will have been invested by the authorities to improve the quality of the water of this former industrial zone while converting the site to benefit the local residents. “EnGlobe was chosen over 20 worldwide competitors for the accomplishment of this project. AMIRAN 8.1 INTRODUCTION The countries around the Mediterranean have experienced far-reaching changes in land quality and land use. The centres of very early, highly developed civilizations of the western world were here. Together with their great achievements they brought about intensive use of the land-sometimes exceSSIveuse. The political changes that affected the area during a millennia of its history involved similar changes, for better or for worse, in husbanding of the land. Extensive areas of olive groves-famous since antiquity-fruit orchards and vineyards, many of them grown on carefully terraced slopes, indicate but some of the prominent achievements of mediterranean agriculture. By con- trast, periods of decline, being sometimes periods of depopulation, brought about very adverse effects, in particular abandonment of cultivated land and disrepair of the terraces. In consequence there was erosion of the soil, and downwash into the valleys of the lowland plains; there was excessive sedimen- tation in these valleys, choking the river and wadi beds, and sometimes followed by formation of swamps owing to lack of drainage; and not infre- quently malaria affected these swampy areas. This whole syndrome of land deterioration is illustrated in many mediterranean countries. A classic case is Israel of the nineteenth century. Israel showed some significant achievements in agriculture and land development in antiquity, and the deterioration is easy to follow in detail. Two factors bring about particu- larly significant effects of processes of land transformation.
