Finally, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Sir Paul, Ghana Standard Authority, pesticides laboratory for his support during the analysis. v ABSTRACT The use of insecticides in controlling different types of pest is one of the essential measures of modern food crops production. However, the residue resulting from misapplication of pesticides on vegetables is a crucial concern not only to the people of Ghana but the international community at large. The aim of this project was to determine the usage of organophosphorus insecticides, the types and their residue levels in tomatoes and cabbage sold at the Nkawkaw market. The objectives were to determine: the sources of production of Cabbage and Tomato sold at the Nkawkaw market, the types of Organophosphate insecticides sold to tomato and cabbage farmers by the agrochemical sellers, the frequency and times of administration by the farmers and the concentrations of Organophosphate insecticides identified in the Cabbage and Tomato sold in the above mentioned market. Questionnaire interviews showed that of fifty sellers, only 17 (34%) dealt with the farmers directly, while 33 (66%) took their suppliers from those who go to the farmers directly (middle women). Out of the seventeen (17) farmers, eleven (65%) have their farms located in Nkawkaw and nearby areas; three (18%) of them have their farms in the Asante Akim District, whilst the remaining three (18%) have their farms at Kumawu in the Ashanti region. It was also realized that, farmers sprayed their vegetables throughout the growing season of the crop. Most of the pesticides used by the farmers were organochlorine. From the results of the laboratory test, only Ethoprophos and Phorate with mean concentrations of <0.01 and 0.02mg/kg respectively were detected in the cabbage samples. Malathion, Chlorpyrifos and Profenofos with their mean concentrations as <0.01, <0.01 and 0.47mg/kg respectively were detected in the tomato samples. vi TABLE OF CONTENT     Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana Small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) serve as the main or additional source of income for more than three million Ghanaians and can be broadly categorised into wood forest products, non-wood forest products and forest services. Many of these SMFEs are informal, untaxed and largely invisible within state forest planning and management. Pressure on the forest resource within Ghana is growing, due to both domestic and international demand for forest products and services. The need to improve the sustainability and livelihood contribution of SMFEs has become a policy priority, both in the search for a legal timber export trade within the Voluntary Small and Medium Partnership Agreement (VPA) linked to the European Union Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (EU FLEGT) Action Plan, and in the quest to develop a national Forest Enterprises strategy for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). This sourcebook aims to shed new light on the multiple SMFE sub-sectors that in Ghana operate within Ghana and the challenges they face. Chapter one presents some characteristics of SMFEs in Ghana. Chapter two presents information on what goes into establishing a small business and the obligations for small businesses and Ghana Government’s initiatives on small enterprises. Chapter three presents profiles of the key SMFE subsectors in Ghana including: akpeteshie (local gin), bamboo and rattan household goods, black pepper, bushmeat, chainsaw lumber, charcoal, chewsticks, cola, community-based ecotourism, essential oils, ginger, honey, medicinal products, mortar and pestles, mushrooms, shea butter, snails, tertiary wood processing and wood carving.

The DBM approach, unlike physics-based distributed and conceptual models that fit existing laws to data-series, uses the data to identify the model structure in an objective statistical manner. The approach is parsimonious, in that it requires few spatially-distributed data and is, therefore, suitable for data limited regions like West Africa. Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) rainfall to riverflow modelling approach is the utilization of multiple rainfall time-series as separate input in parallel into a model to simulate a single riverflow time-series in a large scale. The approach is capable of simulating the effects of each rain gauge on a lumped riverflow response. Within this paper we present the application of DBM-MISO modelling approach to 20778 km2 humid tropical rain forest basin in Ghana. The approach makes use of the Bedford Ouse modelling technique to evaluate the non-linear behaviour of the catchment with the input of the model integrated in different ways including into new single-input time-series for subsequent Single Input Single Output (SISO) modelling.

Page 1 ANNUAL CRIME STATISTICS 2016 CRIME STATISTICS Comparative analysis of Crime Statistics for the year 2015 and 2016 showed remarkable results: Police received a total of 177,241 complaints throughout the country in the year 2016. This represents a decrease of 9,193 cases, which translated into 4.9% over that of the year 2015 which recorded a figure of 186,434. Out of this total, 166,839 representing 94.1% were registered as true cases; the remaining 10,402 cases representing 5.9% were refused. The cases, which were refused, were regarded as trivial, civil in nature or false and so did not warrant Police action. Out of the true cases, 29,778 cases were sent to court for prosecution. At the court, 8,379 cases representing 28.1% gained conviction whilst 812 representing 2.7% were acquitted. At the close of the year 2016, 20,587 cases representing 69.1% of the total number of cases sent to court for prosecutions were awaiting trial. A total of 36,042 cases were closed as undetected whilst 101,019 cases representing 60.5% of the total number of true cases were under investigation at the close of the year 2016. I discuss issues concerning the historical, geo-political, religious, socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds of the people. Among others, it is shown that Nkami is a South- Guang language spoken by approximately 400 people in a resettlement community in the Afram Plains of Ghana. The overwhelming factor that preserves the language and holds its speakers together is the traditional institution of Afram (deity). Linguistically, Nkami is distinct from other regional languages. The data for the study were extracted from a large corpus collected from a documentation project on the language and people. In addition to introducing Nkami, this study also provides valuable data for future research as well as deepens our knowledge of other Guang and other regional languages. Keywords: Nkami, Guang languages, Kwa language family, endangered undocumented language, areal-typological linguistic features. Introduction The purpose of this article is to introduce to the world of knowledge a group of people and a language called Nkami. The paper discusses issues concerning the historical, geographical, political, religious, demographical, social, economic and linguistic backgrounds of the people. Among other things, it is shown that Nkami is a South-Guang language spoken by about 4001 people in a resettlement community, Amankwa (also known as Amankwakrom), in the Afram Plains of the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The size of the population and its spatial distribution, growth and change over time, in addition to its socio-economic characteristics are all important in development planning. A population census is the most important source of data on the size, composition, growth and distribution of a country’s population at the national and sub-national levels. Data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will serve as reference for equitable distribution of national resources and government services, including the allocation of government funds among various regions, districts and other sub-national populations to education, health and other social services. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is delighted to provide data users, especially the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, with district-level analytical reports based on the 2010 PHC data to facilitate their planning and decision-making. The District Analytical Report for the Suhum Municipality is one of the 216 district census reports aimed at making data available to planners and decision makers at the district level. In addition to presenting the district profile, the report discusses the social and economic dimensions of demographic variables and their implications for policy formulation, planning and interventions. The conclusions and recommendations drawn from the district report are expected to serve as a basis for improving the quality of life of Ghanaians through evidence- based decision-making, monitoring and evaluation of developmental goals and intervention programmes.
