Dear Secretary Salazar: I strongly oppose the Bush administration's illegal and illogical regulations under Section 4(d) and Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, which reduce protections to polar bears and create an exemption for greenhouse gas emissions. I request that you revoke these regulations immediately, within the 60-day window provided by Congress for their removal. The Endangered Species Act has a proven track record of success at reducing all threats to species, and it makes absolutely no sense, scientifically or legally, to exempt greenhouse gas emissions -- the number-one threat to the polar bear -- from this successful system. I urge you to take this critically important step in restoring scientific integrity at the Department of Interior by rescinding both of Bush's illegal regulations reducing protections to polar bears. Senator Dodd, I don’t know how I can thank you for that introduction, which is probably the best I’ve ever had. I shouldn’t be surprised, I suppose, since it came from a senator of the United States. I am touched. Also, ladies and gentlemen, I’m upset that you applaud me as I rise, since I fear that you won’t when I subside. However, if we can get past that, I have to say that this is something for which I feel more honored than anything that’s happened in my life. I am also more daunted. It’s the biggest audience, it’s the most distinguished audience, as I can see just by a rapid glance around, and it’s in the nation’s capital. Also, this is in fact a very inopportune time for me to try to give a lecture like this, because I’ve spent the last five months in Los Angeles, and now I haven’t the slightest idea what I think about anything. -

Brunswick, Maine FOREWORD This catalogue and the exhibition Nineteenth Century American Paintings at Bowdoin College begin a new chapter in the development of the Bow- doin College Museum of Art. For many years, the Colonial and Federal portraits have hung in the Bowdoin Gallery as a permanent exhibition. It is now time to recognize that nineteenth century American art has come into its own. Thus, the Walker Gallery, named in honor of the donor of the Museum building in 1892, will house the permanent exhi- bition of nineteenth century American art; a fitting tribute to the Misses Walker, whose collection forms the basis of the nineteenth century works at the College. When renovations are complete, the Bowdoin and Boyd Galleries will be refurbished to house permanent installations similar to the Walker Gal- lery's. During the renovations, the nineteenth century collection will tour in various other museiniis before it takes its permanent home. My special thanks and congratulations go to David S. Berreth, who developed the original idea for the exhibition to its present conclusion. His talent for exhibition installation and ability to organize catalogue materials will be apparent to all. -

The exhibition of 51 paintings by 26 American artists will be on view at the National Gallery of Art's East Building, May 9, 2004 through February 6, 2005. Works by such masters as George Caleb Bingham, Frederic Edwin Church, Thomas Eakins, William Stanley Haseltine, Martin Johnson Heade, Fitz Hugh Lane, John Marin, John F. Peto, and William Trost Richards represent four decades of collecting in an area of particular scholarly interest to Wilmerding. "Over the course of his career John Wilmerding has become one of the most respected and widely known authorities on American art. His many books and articles have helped define the scholarly nature of the field as a whole and have also documented the works of key figures. John has organized many exhibitions on American art and through his teaching and lectures he has introduced literally thousands to the wonders and complexities of our national art," said Earl A.
