Fathers of the Church, Part 2: The Latin (or Western) Fathers A previous In Focus explored some of the great Fathers of the Eastern, or Greek, Church. This week the Latin (Western) Fathers are highlighted. While there is no official list of the Fathers, since the fifth century the criteria for selection has been that the individuals lived holy lives, were orthodox in their teachings and writings, lived during antiquity (the first through seventh centuries) and have been approved by the Church. According to some historians, there are more than 100 total Church Fathers (East and West); many of the same names are found on the different lists. The Fathers helped define, establish and promote the dogmas of the Catholic faith. They not only explained and advanced Christianity, but they stood against those who would defame, deny or exploit our Lord, Jesus Christ. This author is not able to adequately measure or describe the sanctity of these men, who were popes, bishops, theologians, apologists and writers. Some are saints, and all gave themselves in the service of the Lord. Here are a handful among the giants from the Western Church who have the title Church Father. They are categorized by those who lived just before the Council of Nicea, those in the era of Nicea and those after the council, up through the seventh century. Part 1 – Church Becomes Powerful Institution Evidence of Rome’s power grab • In 2nd century we see bishops over regions; people looked to them for guidance. • Around 195AD there was dispute over which day to celebrate Passover (14th Nissan vs. Sunday) • Polycarp said 14th Nissan, but now Victor (Bishop of Rome) liked Sunday. • A council was convened to decide, and they decided on Sunday. • But bishops of Asia continued the Passover on 14th Nissan. • Eusebius wrote what happened next: “Thereupon Victor, who presided over the church at Rome, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the parishes of all Asia, with the churches that agreed with them, as heterodox [heretics]; and he wrote letters and declared all the brethren there wholly excommunicate.” (Eus., Hist. eccl. 5.24.9) Everyone started looking to Rome to settle disputes • Rome was always ending up on the winning side in their handling of controversial topics. 1 • So through a combination of the fact that Rome was the most important city in the ancient world and its bishop was always right doctrinally then everyone started looking to Rome. • So Rome took that power and developed it into the Roman Catholic Church by the 600s. Church granted power to rule • Constantine gave the pope power to rule over Italy, Jerusalem, Constantinople and Alexandria. -

ELEN REPORT TO THE U.N. UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW, 35th SESSION 2020. LANGUAGE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST NON- CASTILIAN LANGUAGE SPEAKERS IN SPAIN ELEN is the European NGO that works for the promotion and protection of European lesser- used languages. It represents 45 languages with 164 member organisations in 23 European states. It has consultative status with the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the UN and UNESCO. 1 ELEN STATEMENT TO THE U.N. UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW, 35th SESSION. LANGUAGE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST NON-CASTILIAN LANGUAGE SPEAKERS IN SPAIN Since ELEN’s 2015 Report to the UN UPR on language discrimination in Spain several public institutions in the Kingdom of Spain continue to openly discriminate against non-Castilian languages (Catalan, Galician, Basque which enjoy co-official status, and Aragonese and Asturian which do not). The organisations engaged in defending these languages and the media have regularly highlighted these cases of linguistic discrimination at the national and international level. While the incidents involve different degrees of severity all of them illustrate the low level of respect for speakers of non-Castilian languages as well as being clear violations of the human rights of those citizens. The inability to use co-official languages, and Asturian and Aragonese, is widespread among civil servants and authorities in spite of the official status of these languages (when they have such status) as well as being in violation of several international treaties and conventions signed and ratified by Spain. CATALAN ELEN member organisation Plataforma per la Llengua has reported1 99 cases of serious un- addressed language discrimination in the Catalan-speaking territories in the period between 2015 and 2019. -

Applies to the worldwide Catholic church . Promulgated by the Holy See . Most recent major revision: 1983 . Large body of supporting information EPISCOPAL CONFERENCE NORMS . Norms are promulgated by Episcopal Conference and apply only in the Episcopal Conference area (the U.S.) . The Holy See reviews the norms to assure that they are not in conflict with Catholic doctrine and universal legislation . These norms may be a clarification or refinement of Canon law, but may not supercede Canon law . Diocesan Bishops have to follow norms only if they are considered “binding decrees” • Norms become binding when two-thirds of the Episcopal Conference vote for them and the norms are reviewed positively by the Holy See . Each Diocesan Bishop implements the norms in his own diocese; however, there is DIOCESAN STATUTES AND NORMS . Apply within the Diocese only . Promulgated and modified by the Bishop . Teaching Christian History in Seminary: A Declension Story Walter Sawatsky Introduction Do good theology and good pastoring necessarily require deep interest in the Church’s history? A low view of Christian history has long been a free church affliction, apparently due to an exaggerated belief in the sole authority of Scripture. When scholars in my circle recently began talking about a “usable” history, I soon realized this discussion was not really about history. Rather, it was a theological misuse of history, an effort to achieve theological certainty where the history referred to fits the desired theology. Christian history is about the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church – the “body of Christ” as the primary New Testament image – for which Christ gave himself. Sending the flawed human individuals making up the body of Christ into the world as ambassadors of the good news was a divine risk, done with a “sending” of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide that motley crew of humans “into all truth,” to pick one of Jesus’ descriptors for the Spirit’s role in Christian history. It has proved very tempting to select out a usable “exceptional” chosen people to present a story line more easily seen as Holy Spirit-guided. So, I have often started a Christian history class with the question, Do you love the Church?, in order to start probing the light and shadow sides of the story. This reflection on teaching history in a seminary is shaped by the conclusion I have come to that the troubling legacy of the Anabaptist- Mennonite tradition, as seems true of most free churches, is that we do not love the Church and do not believe the Holy Spirit led it into all truth, except for our small part of the story, properly sanitized. -
