NIRVANA: IN UTERO 20TH ANNIVERSARY MULTI-FORMAT REISSUE OUT SEPTEMBER 23rd FULL TRACKLISTING REVEALED INCLUDING REMASTERED ALBUM, NEW 2013 MIX, RECENTLY UNEARTHED "FORGOTTEN TUNE," ORIGINAL NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD "HEART-SHAPED BOX" AND "ALL APOLOGIES" MIXES, 1990 "MARIGOLD" DEMO, "LIVE AND LOUD" CONCERT FROM DECEMBER 13, 1993 (ALSO AVAILABLE AS A STANDALONE DVD) & MUCH MUCH MORE To say that Nirvana's third and ultimately final studio album In Utero was 1993's most polarizing record would be the understatement of a decade. The unadorned sonic rawness of Steve Albini's recording laid bare every primal nuance of the most confrontational yet vulnerable material Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would ever record. And with its 1991 predecessor Nevermind having sold some 30 million copies, singlehandedly returning honest rock 'n' roll to the top of the pop charts, In Utero was essentially the first record Nirvana would make with any expectations from the public. So from the opening quasi-shamble melodics of "Serve The Servants" through the bittersweet closing strains of "All Apologies," In Utero was the sound of the most incredible yet conflicted rock 'n' roll band of the era at the peak of its powers coming to terms with a generational spokes-band mantle they'd never seen coming-and ultimately surmounting these struggles to make the record they needed to make. As Rolling Stone's David Fricke said in his review at the time, "In Utero is a lot of things-brilliant, corrosive, enraged and thoughtful, most of them all at once. But more than anything, it's a triumph of the will." Universal Music Group will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the unwitting swansong of the single most influential artist of the 1990s with a multi-format release that spreads more than 70 remastered, remixed, rare, unreleased and live recordings over configurations ranging from a 3-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital/CD remaster of the original album.

The rise of interest in heavy metal academically reflects the growth of the genre as a normal or con- tested part of everyday lives around the globe. The aim of this series is to provide a home and focus for the growing number of monographs and edited collections that analyse heavy metal and other heavy music; to publish work that fits within the emergent subject field of metal music studies; that is, work that is critical and inter-disciplinary across the social sciences and humanities; to publish work that is of interest to and enhances wider disciplines and subject fields across social sciences and the humanities; and to support the development of early career researchers through providing opportunities to convert their doctoral theses into research monographs.

  • Bruises on the Fruit
ruises onon thethe fruitfruit B A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIRVANA & THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR MUSIC by Gary Vehar From the moment Nirvana’s landmark CD Nevermind was released, the world of rock music has never been the same. I for one will always be thankful that that album came out when it did, slightly over a week before my eighteenth birthday. I was a still-wet-behind-the-ears college freshman, away from home for the first time. Just as my life was changing drastically, so was the culture. Music, politics, fashion and art underwent an enormous change as the 90’s sloughed off the last vestiges of the 80’s. Concealed as I was in the quiet town of Ellensburg, Washington, within the tiny confines of my third-floor door room, it was the change in musical guard that first caught my attention. Friends from Seattle regularly brought over dubbed tapes to share with those of us here in college, and among one batch was an advance tape for a band called Nirvana. Nevermind was already causing excitement before its official release of September 24th, 1991. Leaving my friends for the night, I couldn’t get the songs, the sounds, out of my head. About a week later I was in yet another dorm room, listening to a brutish lout rave about the same album. Even at this early date it was obvious Nirvana was crossing all boundaries, even if the fellow who owned this copy (the real CD, this time) made fun of the over-the-top screams that so captivated me.

  • Music, Nostalgia and Estrangement in Twin Peaks
Chapter 18 “I'll point you to a better time/A safer place to be”: Music, Nostalgia and Estrangement in Twin Peaks: The Return David Sweeney In her review of the first two episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return (The Return hereafter) for Variety Sonia Saraiya criticises the “inexplicably stupid” closing scene in which “the indie-electronic band Chromatics performs to a room of middle-aged townies taking tequila shots”1. Leaving aside the class contempt, ageism and regional snobbery evident here, Saraiya also demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of the aesthetic of the series: Chromatics' music is strongly influenced by 1980s synthpop – most notably New Order and Giorgio Moroder – and as such its inclusion in the show is consistent with the use of similarly ‘retro’ music in the original series – usually referencing the 1950s – and throughout Lynch's oeuvre. Furthermore, Chromatics' presence, and that of the other acts performing at the Bang Bang Bar – a mixture of fifties and eighties influenced musicians – makes perfect extra-diegetic sense in the context of what music critic Simon Reynolds has termed “retromania”: pop culture's fascination with, and constant referencing of, its past. The late cultural critic Mark Fisher developed Reynolds' concept in his 2014 book Ghosts of My Life with his analysis of the “classic style” of twenty-first century artists such as Amy Winehouse and Adele, whose music “belong[s] neither to the present or the past, but to some timeless era, an eternal 1960s or an eternal 80s”.2 For Fisher such music is an indication of cultural stasis and a lack of innovation (one theme of the book is, as its subtitle indicates, “lost futures”); however, in the context of Twin Peaks “retro” music – which in some cases, like the Cactus Blossoms (episode 3) or Rebekah Del Rio (episode 10), is such a perfect pastiche of its sources as to seem to belong authentically to the past – also functions as an element of estrangement.

He was a pounding on the ceiling at 328 Shotwell Street, San Francisco, CA 94110. Shotwell and 17th. Syringes littered the gutters. A family of junkies lived in a broken down car that they pushed around the corner every week to avoid a ticket for impeding street cleaning. The only other time they got out of it was to shit on the pavement and by the smell of it they often didn't even bother for that. Black youth on some steps smoking crack from glass pipes, falling back in ecstasy -- almost flattering that they didn't seem troubled as I passed. Across the street the assumed drug dealers (they had frequent quick visits from people who rarely stayed long enough to enter). The red Porsche 924 parked outside seemed a stark contrast to the junky's car, but on closer inspection it was just as shabby. And next to them the young punks proudly displaying the jolly roger: setting sail on voyages of mayhem.
