The school shootings shocked Finnish society, forcing media, academics and experts, police and politicians alike to search for reasons behind the violent incidents. Focusing their analysis on the two main Finnish newspapers, Helsingin Sanomat and Hufvudstadsbladet, authoritative sources of information for Finland’s two language communities, the authors maintain that the Finnish case contributes to research on school shootings by evidencing the intimate linkages between the state, gender and violence.

  • “Web First” to Death the Media Logic of the School Shootings in the Era of Uncertainty
10.1515/nor-2017-0127 Nordicom Review 31 (2010) 2, pp. 17-29 “Web First” to Death The Media Logic of the School Shootings in the Era of Uncertainty Johanna Sumiala & Minttu Tikka Abstract The article discusses the most recent Finnish school shootings in Jokela (2007) and in Kau- hajoki (2008) as communicative events, proclaimed to be media disasters. These events are described as media disasters following the media logic of the network society. The media performance of the school shootings is analysed from the three different, yet interconnected perspectives: transmission, ritual and dissemination models of communication. The special focus is on the analysis of web based communication; its patterns, functions and logic. The authors argue that the most prevalent media logic of school shooting communication is the circulation of violent messages. Finally the authors suggest that the Jokela and the Kauha- joki school shootings should be considered as articulations of the culture of fear. Keywords: school shooting, media disaster, communication, circulation, culture of fear Introduction: School Shooting as a Media Disaster In his book Speaking into the Air. A History of the Idea of Communication, John Dur- ham Peters (2000) claims that the ultimate purpose of communication is to unite com- munity and organize common life. Etymologically of the word derives from the Latin verb “to share”. The aim of communication thus is to bridge the gap between self and other, private and public, the internal and the external world. A disaster rips the gap open. Once the common, shared world breaks down, the order changes, creating a need to communicate, a desire to create and organize the common life anew.

The reasons for the school shooting were multifarious and complex, and the shooting constituted a deliberate criminal act showing the methodical nature that constitutes an essential element of murder. The marginalization of the perpetrator was of a special kind, the result of several contributory factors. The family, upbringing and the school community but also society as a whole, nowadays including the Internet environment, are in a prime position for preventing marginalization.

By Stephanie Miller Under the mentorship of Dr. Laura E. Agnich ABSTRACT The motivations behind perpetrators’ decisions to commit a school shooting are important to study because they are rare events which generate high public concern, are difficult to predict, and have been increasing in recent years. This study examined the self-reported motives of nineteen perpetrators of school shootings throughout the world by examining their manifestos and other writings. If no self-reported motives were found, then statements made in the perpetrators’ writings were used to decide what factors may have motivated them to commit their acts.

This article examines community response to these incidents. We have gathered comparable survey data from the local communities Jokela (N=330) and Kauhajoki (N=319). Both surveys were conducted approximately six months after the shootings, and they represent local adult populations. With these data, we analyse the reactions of local residents to the shootings. We focus on questions such as whether the shootings were considered isolated tragedies or not, and whether they could have been prevented or not. The article considers what implications these recent critical incidents may have for Finland as a Nordic welfare society.
