Penglais School celebrates Carers Week

In the last issue of the Carers Magazine we told you about the Young Carers Hub which has been set up in Penglais School.

The Hub is a calm and relaxing place where the Young Carers can go to talk to each other and members of staff who are specifically trained to support Young Carers. The Young Carers can drop in at any time for help, support and guidance.

During Carers Week, staff members and Young Carers who use the Hub raised awareness in the school. Carers Unit, Ceredigion County Council 15 Council Tax reduction

The Welsh Government is making it easier for people living with severe mental impairments to get big discounts and rebates on their council tax bills.

Council tax discounts for the Severely Mentally Impaired (SMI) were introduced across England, Scotland and Wales as long ago as 1992. However, according to the MoneySavingExpert website, many people who are eligible are not getting the discounts they are entitled to.

The Welsh Government has become the first to standardise the information it gives about the rebates and to offer one simple application form across all its 22 local councils.

Anyone entitled to the discount in Wales will be able to backdate the rebate to the date they received their diagnosis.

What is the severe mentally impaired discount? A "severely mentally impaired" person is defined as someone living with a severe impairment of intellectual and social functioning, which appears to be permanent - such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, learning difficulties or following a stroke.

To claim the SMI discount, they need to be certified as being SMI by their doctor, and also be eligible for one of a range of benefits, such as Incapacity or Attendance Allowance or Universal Credit.

If both apply, this will mean a 25% council tax discount if they live with another person or exempt the person entirely if they live alone.

If you think you or the person you care for could be entitled to a discount, you can apply by filling in an online form at www.ceredigion.gov.uk/resident/council-tax/forms/ or by calling 01970 633253.

Changes to TV licences for over 75s

Earlier this year the government announced that they would no longer be funding free television licences for people who are over 75, but this does not include everybody.

What does this mean? The current scheme will come to an end in June 2020, anyone who has a free licence at the moment will continue to be covered up until 31 May 2020.

The new scheme will mean that anyone who is 75 or over and receives Pension Credit will still be eligible for a free TV licence which will be paid for by the BBC. If nobody in your household is 75 or over and in receipt of Pension Credit you will need to buy a licence if one is needed.

If you already have a free licence, you do not have to do anything now, TV Licencing will write to you before May next year to let you know how you can pay for your next licence.

If you think you may be eligible to receive Pension The current cost of the different TV licences are: Credit and will then qualify for a free over 75 licence after June 2020, you can find out more at: Colour TV £154.50 www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility or by calling Black and White TV £52.00 0800 99 1234. Vicky Hicks, Carer Lead from the Older Adult Community Mental Health Team in Ceredigion has been working hard to bring a support group for Carers of people with dementia to the north of the county for some time. Finding funding was essential for starting the group and when the Ceredigion Carers Fund opened in November last year, with the backing of a number of Carers, Vicky successfully submitted a group application and has been able to get the group up and running.

The group used the money they received from the Carers Fund to buy a lots of games, activities, art materials and electronic tablets to be used during the meetings.

‘Our Group’ describe themselves as “a group of Carers who come together to support each other through our journey of caring for loved ones with a Dementia or a cognitive impairment.” The group held their first meeting in June and meet every 2 weeks, on a Monday afternoon, in Afallen Deg, Bow Street, SY24 5AZ. The group’s future plans include inviting speakers from different agencies to come and provide advice on caring and the support that is available and also to organise days out and activities that promote health and wellbeing.
