November 2019 Volume V, Issue 3 Barat Academy News FEAST OF SAINT ROSE PHILIPPINE DUCHESNE Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, R.S.C.J., (August 29, 1769 — November 18, 1852) was a Catholic Religious Sister and French-American saint. She spent the last half of her life teaching and serving the people of the midwestern United States. She was born in Grenoble, France, and died in St. Charles, Missouri. Along with Saint Madeleine-Sophie Barat, she was a prominent member of the Society of the Sacred Heart. She was the founder of the first houses of the Society of the Sacred Heart in America. In 1818, Rose Philippine Duchesne headed out to America with four other members of the Society. She arrived in New Orleans, traveled the Louisiana Territory, and ended up in St. Charles, Missouri. Bishop DuBourg welcomed her to New Orleans, and when she sailed up the Mississippi to INSIDE THIS ISSUE St. Louis, she finally settled her colony at St. Charles. Barat Academy Theatre Company’s production of Stephen Gregg’s This is a Test! will be performed on Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2. Performances will be at 7:00 PM in the Barat Academy Gymnasium both evenings. Basketball on Sunday, November 3 from 12-4 pm. The practices start November 4 after event will give interested families the school to prepare both teams for opportunity to meet with faculty, tour their pre-season jamborees on campus, and learn about all that the Barat November 15. Both the boys’ community has to offer. Each year, students and faculty gather for a fun flag football game before Thanksgiving Break. This year’s game will be a house competition and will be played at 2:05 pm on Friday, November 22. You are welcome to join us on campus for this spirited competition! 2 FOR PARENTS: LOOKING FROM THE OUTSIDE IN The Parent Network of Catholic High Schools in Saint Louis has invited Sarah Swafford to speak at Visitation Academy. A graduate of Benedictine College, Sarah is the founder of Emotional Virtues Ministries and speaks around the world to audiences of all ages about emotional virtue, dating and relationships, modesty of intentions, and interior confidence. Her presentation, titled “Looking from the Outside In,” will help parents and adults working with youth understand the ideas of emotional virtue, provide a map for navigating relationships, and examine ways to build up 28 DAYS OF THANKS interior confidence. Addiction Is Real, a St. Louis-based non-profit dedicated to educating parents about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, is partnering with the Creve Coeur Police and Alliance for Healthy Communities to share “Hidden in Plain View: An Initiative to Help Parents Spot Signs of Risky Behavior.” The event includes an exhibit as well as a presentation, and attendees will have the opportunity to interact with a display of a teenager’s bedroom to identify potential warning signs that a child is involved in risky activities. Additionally, attendees will learn how to identify warning signs and discuss the dangers of alcohol and drug use with kids.
