VATICAN NEWS (CNS) -- A week after the 65th anniversary of Father Emil J. Kapaun's capture in North Korea, the bishop of Wichita, Kansas, formally presented a report on the Army chaplain's life, virtues and fame of holiness to the Congregation for Saints' Causes. During the Korean War, Father Kapaun, a priest of the Wichita diocese, and other members of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, were captured by Chinese troops in North Korea Nov. 2, 1950. The priest died in a North Korean prison camp May 23, 1951. The Dedication of the Basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul source: CatholicCulture.org

On November 18th the Church celebrates the dedication of two great Roman basilicas. One is St. Peter at the Vatican and the other is St. Paul-outside-the-Walls. The basilica of St. Peter stands on the site of the tomb of the one to whom Christ gave the keys to the kingdom of Heaven (Matt16:19). It was at this site that St. Peter was executed. Recent excavations have shown that the present basilica was built over the tomb of St. Peter. In the seventeenth century the basilica of St. Peter replaced the ancient Constantinian basilica which was also built over the tomb. St. Paul-outside-the-Walls is built near the place St. Paul was martyred. In 1823 there was a fire that almost completely destroyed the basilica. Gregory XVI rebuilt it and Pius IX consecrated it on December 10, 1854. The celebration of the anniversary of these two dedications has been kept on November 18.

Resolutions: ·Make a visit to a church in honor of these two great Apostles. ·By cooperating with the plan of our Savior, Peter merited his glorious place in the center of Christianity — examine your conscience on how well you have corresponded and cooperated with God's grace. ·St. Paul practiced mortification of the flesh during life, make some sacrifice of food or drink for a specific cause. ·Teach your children what it means to be a temple of the Holy Spirit.”

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne source: CatholicCulture.org and Catholic.org/saints

Rose “Philippine” Duchesne was born in 1769 in France, the daughter of a prominent French lawyer. She was educated by the Visitation and joined their Order. The Order was later dispersed during the . However, she did not stop her works of charity and for some years served the sick and the poor, as well as fugitive priests. In 1804 she joined the Society of the Sacred Heart, founded by St. Madeline Sophie Barat. In 1817, William Dubourg, bishop of the Diocese of and the Two Floridas, visited the Society of the Sacred Heart in . He was looking for a congregation of educators to help evangelize the Indian and French children of his diocese. Philippine begged permission from Barat to serve in the bishop’s diocese. In 1818, she and four other Sisters arrived in . No provisions for housing them had been made and they rested briefly with the Ursuline nuns. They then traveled on a steamboat up the and stopped in St. Louis, Missouri, where they established the first convent of the Society at St. Charles. The indomitable courage of these holy women overcame all obstacles. By 1828, the Society’s first five members in American had grown to six communities. Her one ambition, however, was to work among the Indians. She was seventy-one years old when she obtained the coveted permission from Mother Barat, who wrote: "Don't try to stop her; it was for the Indians that she went to America." With three companions she traveled by boat and oxcart to Sugar Creek, Kansas, to labor there among the 's. Their convent was a wigwam, they slept on the bare ground, and the food was coarse. They opened a school for Indian girls and taught them sewing, weaving, and other household arts. Philippine thought herself a failure because she could not master English, much less the Indian language, but her holiness made a deep impression on the Indians who called her "the woman who always prays," because she spent so much time in the chapel. A priest said of her: "The Indians used her kindness as one uses water — without thinking of it, for they were sure of finding it always fresh and pure." St. Rose Philippine Duchesne died November 18, 1852 at the age of 83 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on July 3, 1988.

Resolutions: ·Pray to St. Rose Philippine Duchesne for the grace of becoming a prayerful soul. ·St. Philippine did not convert people by her speeches, but she converted them by her prayers and her charity towards them, pray for someone who is your "enemy" and if possible perform some kindness for this person. ·See "St. Rose Philippine Duchesne" and Frontier Missionary of the Sacred Heart: Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769-1852).”
