Consumer Insights: What are people talking about with summer vacations?

It has already become abundantly clear that this summer will be very different than other summers as we transition into the “new normal.” One way that we are able to gauge how this conversation will differ is by understanding how people will be spending their summer vacation.

Summer vacation is perceived differently depending on the audience and region of the world. For some it is when school is out, and students and younger children have time to engage in different activities. For others, it is the ability to go on trips and enjoy oneself outside of the normal walks of love. By analyzing summer vacation, we can get an understanding of how consumers anticipate spending their “summer vacation” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

By looking at the below Conversation Clusters, we see that people are still making and planning, and going on trips. At the same time, it seems as if people are very careful and selective in the types of trips that they are discussing. The top travel discussions are around spaces such as national parks, as people are looking to take advantage of vast areas where it would be easy to maintain a safe social distance. Additionally people are talking about road trips, beach vacations and camping trips that can inherently allow you to be able to maintain a social distance.

In the center of these Conversation Clusters, we see discussion about risk mitigation, as people want to make sure that they are acting safely if they decide to go on vacation. As a whole, people view this as an opportunity for an emotional release after a very stressful spring and then summer.
