This copy has been supplied for the purpose of research for private study, on the understanding that it is copyright material, and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgment. 2 ABSTRACT Translatability and translation, the possibility and act of conveying some thing between people, objects, languages, cultures, times, spaces and media, have become increasingly important elements of creative practice and works of art. My research explores this proposition. To contextualise this concept of translation as an artistic and critical method mediating the relationship of the seeable to the sayable I retrace an under-mined vein of translation that grew from the Enlightenment, the Early (Jena) Romantic response to it and its subsequent development through Walter Benjamin to other modern theorists. I suggest that this tradition of translation has developed into a creative method that assumes a pre-existent given from which it evolves in order to destabilise, re-appropriate and make-new. The thesis argues that art has come to occupy the space of translation and proposes that an interpretative mode is ultimately antithetical to a form of thought engaged with in the creative process. This relies on the understanding of a qualitative distinction between acts of translation as presentational and of interpretation as representational.

Even early examples are rife with satirical and thinly-veiled discussions of politics from that particular time period, or act as fantastical thought experiments for how one ought to live and act. In the past 50 years American activists have come to utilize the science fiction for liberal causes, adapting the narrative structure to make a case for messages of equality and a warning against the rise of neoliberal capitalism. Feminist groups since the second wave have utilized literature and art as tool of social justice. Moving from non-fiction pamphlets to poetry, stories and personal narratives has been an important marker of this postmodern period. This pivotal period of the 1970’s to early 1990’s marks the convergence of ideas that would turn into the third wave: namely black feminism and feminist postmodernism. As a millennial, I have grown up with the kind of feminism that is considered “intersectional” and third wave. Having taken classes in both English and Women’s Studies, I became especially interested in this period because it historically embodied a shift towards diversity that was marked with a lot of tension. Periods that are indicative of historical shifts are rarely discussed because they often involve complexities.

The handprint drawings on Cave walls to the latest smartphone self-portraits or ‘Selfie’ clearly demonstrate people’s obsession for a pictorial representation of the self. We live in a world where hedonistic materialism and instant gratification have seeped deep into our culture and psyche. The great malady of the twentieth century implicated in all of our troubles and affecting us individually and socially, is ‘loss of soul’, and loss of meaning. But deep inside the core of every person, soul selfies exist. No society in human history has successfully maintained moral life without the aid of religion. Soul selfies are the religious lens through which we look at our lives. In a postmodern world there are no universal religious or ethical laws, everything is shaped by the cultural context of a particular time and place and community. Most often rejecting reason and science, New Age religion or New Age spirituality arose as a discontent with traditional religious beliefs. Some of the most celebrated contemporary fiction captures and reflects this turbulent situation of spiritual engagement, uncertainty, and experimentation. Towns older than Boston include the Spanish settlements at Saint Augustine and Santa Fe, the Dutch settlements at Albany and New Amsterdam, as well as the English colony of Jamestown in present-day Virginia. We might think of them as “art of the eye” and “art of the heart”—to adapt the terms for the two doctrines or paths spoken of in The Voice of the Silence . The art of the eye is produced with “more or less skill, virtuosity and vigor”: “With cold eye and indifferent mind the public regards the work. Connoisseurs admire ‘tech- nique,’ as one might admire a tight-rope walker, or enjoy the painting quality,’ as one might enjoy a cake. But hungry souls go hungry away” (p. 25). Of the other kind, the art of the heart, he writes: “There is another art . but it possesses also an awakening prophetic power which can have far-reaching and profound effect” (p. 26). This is the art of the spiritual life, which is, says Kandinsky, a form of cognition—a way of knowing—that translates our complex movement toward what is above and beyond us into the simplicity of understanding. Kandinsky’s comments apply to all forms of art, not just painting but literature too.
