 Over The Rainbow – Garland – Notes

 Level: Elementary.

 Time: 20 mins.

 Note: From the timeless 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, this became ’s signature . She wrote in a letter: "'Over the Rainbow' has become part of my life. It's so symbolic of everybody's dreams and wishes that I'm sure that's why some people get tears in their eyes when they hear it. I've sung it thousands of times and it's still the song that's closest to my heart.” Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole had a huge hit with a ukulele medley of this mixed with the standard . There is a worksheet for the latter on www.tuneintoenglish.com , and the lyrics of the medley are on the last page of this worksheet. Students can compare the different versions of the .

1) Give each student a folded copy of the worksheet. Remind them of the phonetic symbol sounds, then ask them to work in pairs to complete the first exercise. Key: /aɪ/ /uː/ / ɑ:/ / ɒ/

2) Play the song. Students listen and number the words in the order they hear them.

3) Ask students to unfold the worksheet and to complete the next activity, based on the answers to the previous activities and context. Key: See complete lyrics.

6) Explain any difficult vocabulary.

7) Sing together.

Discussion: This sweet song may be a point of discussion about dreams and the wish to find our dearest who are dead or far away, who we think we might reach over the rainbow in a deep blue spot, where any dream could come true… The teacher may suggest a sentence as a start. Example: I wish to fly over the rainbow to see the world and avoid the suffering.
