2 FROM THE RECTOR

The transformation of John Donne (1572 - 1631) from great ‘love’ poet to great preacher as Dean of St Pauls has always seemed, if not somewhat suspect, certainly rather strange. One of the key rules about preaching is not to promote oneself too much, and one does notice in extracts from his sermon preached at the funeral of Sir William Cockayne that there appears to be more Donne than Cockayne. But it is quite helpful and approachable material all the same. But when we consider with a religious seriousness the manifold weaknesses of the strongest devotions in time of prayer, it is a sad consideration. I throw myself down in my chamber, and I call and invite God and his angels thither. And when they are there, I neglect God and his angels for the noise of a fly, for the rattling of a coach, for the whining of a door; I talk on, in the same posture of praying: eyes lifted up, knees bowed down, as though I prayed to God. And if God or his angels should ask me, when I last thought of God in that prayer, I cannot tell. Sometimes I find that I had forgot what I was about, but when I begun to forget it, I cannot tell. A memory of yesterday’s pleasures, a fear of tomorrow’s dangers, a straw under my knee, a noise in my ear, an anything, a nothing, a fancy, a chimera in my brain, troubles me in my prayer. So certainly there is nothing, nothing in spiritual things, perfect in this world.

4 FROM THE CHURCHWARDENS PEW Combined Services On the second Sunday in January we joined Churches for their Mattins Services at Chiddingstone Causway. It was most enjoyable and we were made very welcome with refreshments following the service in their lovely church hall. In order that we get to know one another better it has been decided that the four parishes should get together for a combined service, which moves between churches, on the fifth Sunday of the month. The first of these service takes place on the 29th March and we are pleased to say it will be in our church in Fordcombe Services for February February services are as follows :- 9am Communion on the first Sunday, 10 am sung Eucharist on the second and 10am family service on the fourth Sunday. St Peter’s Fellowship Our next meeting takes place at 8pm on Wednesday 26th February 2020 at Woodpeckers. Our topic of discussion will be “Reflections or Lent”. All are most warmly welcome. Meal and a pint The next ‘Meal and a Pint’ meeting is set for Tuesday 25th (see the advert on the middle page ). If you have not come along before why not give it a try. It’s usually a good even- ing and a chance to meet old and make new friends.

Best Wishes Mike Gilbert 740371 [email protected]

Big thank you to Alex “SUPER HERO”

I should like to send a big thank you to Alex and the other guys who assist me and other motorists who got stuck in the flood waters at Penshurst. They towed me out and helped me get home. They are my “super Heroes”.

THE WEAPON

What is the most powerful weapon of all? Is it the bomb, the knife or the gun. No, its something quite small possessed by us all. It’s a little thing known as the tongue.

It can cut like a knife, it can cause endless strife. It can cause the whole world to go wrong. It can ruin a life it can part man and wife. It is a powerful weapon, the tongue

But if used the right way, it can brighten each day. It can comfort the old and the young. It can smooth a rough path it can bring forth a laugh. It is a powerful weapon, the tongue

13 Fordcombe Primary School

General election The school was used as a polling station due to the village hall being out of action pending the re-build. Well done to all the pupils, staff and parents for working round this particularly with Christmas plays in full swing. The electoral officials were very thankful for the school’s hospitality. Extra special thanks to Mr Blackburn for converting his office to a polling station for the (very long) voting day, opening up a separate entrance and isolating that corner of the school from the rest. The school isn’t large enough to have a dedicated caretaker and Mr Blackburn, his staff and indeed parents, carers and pupils all regularly step outside of their normal roles and give up their own family time to make the school environment the best it can be for all.

Christmas Fair Success On a similar note it was lovely to see so many volunteers helping to set up the school hall ready for the Christmas Fair: a real team effort. There was a Secret Santa room, face painting, crafts and games. A lovely family atmosphere with lots of smiling faces, the whole community involved and everyone leaving having eaten at least one piece of cake and won some chocolate. Many thanks to all those involved.

Choir out and about before Christmas The thirty members of the school choir (almost a third of the school!) were whisked up to Ashurst Park to perform to the assembled residents of the local care home. The singing was great and a credit to the hard work of the children and Mrs Hughes. More impressive, was the way that all the children introduced themselves and mingled with the residents afterwards – a lovely way to cross the generational divide and keep the school close to the local community. Rock up and Read Sessions in Ash Class

Many thanks to all those parents that stayed after drop-off to read with their children in Ash class. Reading is the key to learning. Being exposed to interesting story books with rhyme and a growing vocabulary is the way to broaden children’s experiences and set them up for later learning. More mornings like this will be scheduled.

Crafting in Ash Class Parents were in again before Christmas to support their children with Christmas crafts. A great time of year to be involved at school, it was lovely to see groups of children working with parents to create masterpieces!

14 Forest Schools Mrs Saxty has secured a new provider for 2020. We welcome Jo Parker, an experienced and qualified Forest School leader, who will deliver the sessions on Thursday afternoons between January and the end of June. Each year group will have a one-hour session every four weeks to ensure they experience all the different seasons throughout the year. The chil- dren will attend their Forest School sessions in year groups rather than classes, which means their learning will be more individualised in a smaller group setting. Forest Schools are an outdoor educational concept aimed at using natural spac- es to develop personal, technical and social skills, independence, self-esteem, teamwork and problem solving. The school has a dedicated forest school area in its grounds.

Places There are some school places currently available as people move in and out of the area. Contact the school office on 01892 740224 and please spread the word. Even a small increase in pupil numbers can have a positive impact as core government funding is proportionate to headcount.

16 District Councillor Village Magazine Article – February 2020

‘What a wet one!’ is all I can say about January. With the Eden and Medway flowing through the Ward this deluge has brought the predictable flooding and disruption, but what has all this got to do with the Council I hear you say? Well the Environment Agency have gone out to consultation on a proposal to raise the Leigh barrier by 1 metre and I would like to hear your thoughts so that, on your behalf, I can make the up-stream communities’ views known. The proposal would improve Tonbridge’s flood defences but would likely increase flood area and depth in Penshurst and Chiddingstone. The Environment Agency are attend- ing the Penshurst Parish Council meeting at 7.15pm on 3rd February and I urge you to go along to listen to their case.

The Local Plan saga continues, with further exchanges between SDC and the Planning Inspector, and it looks to be only moving one way – a Judicial Review appeal by the Council against the Inspector’s decision to reject our plan on grounds of inadequate consultation with neighbouring authorities about them meeting our housing needs shortfalls. Going back to the drawing board could take another 4 years, and without trashing the Green Belt is unlikely to generate any more new homes than the plan submitted already; an unnecessary delay! Furthermore, although Wealden and St Albans councils have also had their plans rejected for similar reasons, in each case their neighbours objected – but in ’ case our neighbours were supportive. As background, you might be surprised to know that only 2 councils in the country have a greater proportion of Green Belt than Sevenoaks (Epping Forest and Tandridge have 94%) and yet over the last 10 years we have built 2,500 new homes in the District (including 71 affordable homes in 2019 alone) – so we haven’t been doing so badly!

I have mentioned Planning Enforcement in previous articles and am pushing Tom Tugendhat about getting planning laws changed to make the system more effective, including making development without permission a criminal offence (too many people decide to develop and see if they get caught because they have a ‘retrospective application’ get out) and giving Enforcement Officers pow- ers to issue immediate ‘ Stop Notices’ (a bit like Parking Wardens issuing on the spot fines). Until I can get the law changed (!) I plough on with several local cas- es. Finally a couple of quick plugs: a new Licencing pre-application advisory service has been launched (details shortly to be on the SDC website) and I am hosting the next Age UK pop-up at The Old Rectory, Chiddingstone at 1.30pm on 27th February with Sevenoaks Council Chairman in attendance.

19 The Royal British Legion

As some in the Village already know, Dick Fry stood down in November 2019 from being the Standard Bearer of the Fordcombe Branch of the British Legion. He has carried the Standard at ‘Remembrance Day’ Ser- vices in Fordcombe, Ashurst and Blackham for some 26 years. The members of the Branch decided to mark the occasion at an informal gathering at the ‘Chafford Arms’ on Friday 17th January. We presented him with a planter from Chilstone, and a Spitfire tie, as well as a certifi- cate from the British Legion. As a special thank-you from the Parishion- ers of Ashurst, Rae Jarrett drew a lovely picture of St Martin’s framed by Michael. All these gifts were greatly appreciated and were totally unex- pected by Dick. Jeremy Syers

VILLAGE HALL NEWS

Yes, a new hall is finally underway. What exciting times for the village! We also had the fantastic news, just before Christmas, that the Big Lottery Fund is granting us £90,000 towards it, which means we now have a good contingency in place in the event of unforeseen problems or unexpected additional expense.

The Asbestos removal should have started by the time you read this, then the demolition of the old hall will take place and construction of the new hall begin. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped to make this happen.

We will be holding our AGM this year on Thursday April 2nd at 7.30pm in The Chafford Arms. If anyone wishes to eat beforehand (a great idea) it's ad- visable to book in advance as space will be limited - Paul or Jackie 740267. We will be presenting our accounts and usual year end report.

SMILE LINES Lead us not…… A Mother had been teaching her three year-old daughter the Lord’s Prayer. For several evenings at bedtime, she repeated after her the lines from the prayer. Finally, the child decided to go solo. The mother listened with pride as she carefully enunciated each word right up to the end of the prayer: “Lead us not into temptation, “she prayed, “ but deliver us some email. Amen.”

Fraud information from the

If you have experienced a suspected scam, please email me the details so that I can make the Fraud team aware. If you receive unsolicited calls like in the example below, from someone claiming to be from a government agency and you think it is a scam, the best course of action is simply to hang up. Failing this get their details and speak to a family member or contact them on a trusted number. If still uncertain, contact us at the Police and we can give advice as to what to do.

“A call was received from an 012... number (full details no known) to an elderly person living in the Whitstable area. The male caller purported to be from a government agency, asking if the person’s property had previously received a grant for free loft insulation. It had, so the caller then sought to confirm that the loft was still used for storage as opposed to having been converted for living accommodation. He stated that problems with damp had been identified with such installations and a team would be sent round that day to check for signs of damage. The caller then asked if the occupier was aged between 60 and 85 (which was the case), and then asked if the person routinely made important decisions on their own or with the assistance of family / friends. When the occupier said “family” the call was abruptly ended and the line went dead. Clearly this was not a call from a legitimate agency. It could have been from a firm looking to do unnecessary work or worse still from scammers trying to gain entry to a vulnerable person’s home, with ill intent in mind. The moral of the story must be, never to trust cold caller’s stated identity and always get a second opinion from a trusted friend or family member before agreeing to anything or giving out any personal details, including home address. It is interesting to note that on this occasion the caller did not say that they knew the address of the person that was phoned, but even if they had of done it would not have proven any form of validation so far as their identity was concerned.”

We have received below a variation on the BT scam, alerted by a NHW member. Please be alert to this and as always, do not ASSUME the caller is genuine, do not BELIEVE they are genuine, always CONFIRM they are genuine by contacting a trusted number and if possible, on a different telephone than the one they rung you on. If you know it is a scam, like in this case, simply hang up.

“Earlier today this member received a phone call, seemingly from BT. An automated message advised the informant that they had a text message waiting and to hear it they had to press "1" on their phone. Suspicion was aroused, not least because their phone contract is not with BT and so the phone was immediately put down.

Continued on page 32

30

31 Continued from page 30

Within seconds the phone rang again and a further automated message thanked the informant for their payment of £500. To cancel this payment they had to press "1" again. Unsurprisingly our informant just put the phone down.

This appears to a variant on the "mobile phone" scam about which we passed on an alert earlier this year. The second call is an unpleasant addition to this scam and our informant did exactly the right thing by putting the phone down.”
