DOI: 10.5294/pacla.2017.20.3.7 Abstract Telefantasy series Torchwood (2006–2011, multiple production partners) was industrially and paratextually positioned as being Welsh, despite its frequent status as an international co-production. When, for series 4 (sub- titled Miracle Day, much as the miniseries produced as series 3 was subti- tled Children of Earth), the production (and diegesis) moved primarily to the United States as a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Amer- ican premium cable broadcaster Starz, fan response was negative from the announcement, with the series being termed Americanised in popular and academic discourse. This study, drawn from my doctoral research, which interrogates all of these assumptions via textual, industrial/contextual and audience analysis focusing upon ideological, aesthetic and interpretations of national identity representation, focuses upon the interactions between fan cultural capital and national cultural capital and how those interactions impact others of the myriad of reasons why the (re)glocalisation failed. It finds that, in part due to the competing public service and commercial ide- ologies of the BBC, Torchwood was a glocalised text from the beginning, de- spite its positioning as Welsh, which then became glocalised again in series 4.

    Monday 23 October 2017 Meet the cast on the all new series of Doctor Who When Jodie Whittaker takes over as the thirteenth Doctor on the global hit show next year, she will be joined by an all new regular cast. BBC announces today that Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill will line-up as the new regular cast on Doctor Who. Bradley will star as Graham, Tosin will play Ryan and Mandip will play Yasmin. Also joining the series in a returning role is Sharon D Clarke. New head writer and executive producer Chris Chibnall, who made the decision to cast the first ever woman in the iconic role, is also shaking up who will travel with the Doctor in the TARDIS, with a team of new characters. In more exclusive news, it is confirmed that the new series will be a ten-week run of fifty-minute episodes, kicking off with a feature length hour for the opening launch. Chris Chibnall says: “The new Doctor is going to need new friends. We’re thrilled to welcome Mandip, Tosin and Bradley to the Doctor Who family. They’re three of Britain’s brightest talents and we can’t wait to see them dive into brand new adventures with Jodie’s Doctor. After all this time anticipating her arrival true, Jodie Whittaker’s first series as the Doctor has been and gone, so we’re dedicating a lot of coverage this issue to it. We’ve got everything from reviews of the series by new president Victoria Walker, to predictions from society stalwart Ian Bayley, ratings from Francis Stojsavljevic, and even some poetry from Will Shaw. But we’re not just looking at Series Eleven. We’re looking back too, with debates on the merits of the Capaldi era, a spirited defence of The Time of the Doctor, and drifting back through the years, even a look at the Virgin New Adventures! Behind the scenes, there’s plenty of “change, my dear, and not a moment too soon!” We bid adieu to valued comrades like Peter, Francis and Alfred as new faces are welcomed onto the committee, with Victoria now helming the good ship WhoSoc, supported by new members Rory, Dahria and Ben, while familiar faces look on wistfully from the port bow. It’s also the Society’s Thirtieth Anniversary this year, which will be marked by a party in Mansfield College followed by a slap-up dinner; an event which promises to make even the most pampered Time Lord balk at its extravagance! On a personal note, it’s my last year before I graduate Oxford, at least for now, so when the next issue is out, I’ll be writing from an entirely new place.

This new British sci-fi crime thriller, from Russell T Davies, follows the team as they delve into the unknown. They are fighting the impossible while keeping their everyday lives going back at home. The cast includes John Barrowman (Doctor Who) as the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness, the ever-watchful heart of the team guarding against the fragility of humankind. Eve Myles (Doctor Who, Belonging) plays Gwen Cooper, initially an outsider whose first encounter with Torchwood sparks a burning curiosity to get to the truth and throws her into an unfamiliar but exciting world. Burn Gorman (Bleak House) plays the raw but charming medic, Owen Harper, and Naoko Mori (Absolutely Fabulous) is Toshiko Sato, the team member who specialises in all things technical. Torchwood is written by Russell T Davies and Chris Chibnall, with contributing writers including PJ Hammond,Toby Whithouse and Helen Raynor. Leading Once this landscape gets into you, it doesn’t let go. The cliffs, the lady Olivia Colman endless sea, the fi elds that roll right up to the beach. This is Thomas Hardy country: he understood and wrote about this savage, beautiful scenery better than anyone. Broadchurch is peppered with references to his work, from the name of David Tennant’s character, Alec Hardy, to the name of the local police force, Wessex Police. There are more embedded in the second series too. Then there’s the cast, headed by Olivia Colman and Tennant. I wrote the part of Ellie for Olivia – I’m not sure what we’d have done if she’d turned us down. Thankfully, she didn’t, and it has been a privilege to write for TELEVISION an actress who’s capable of anything you throw at her. She’s also a wonderful person to have on set: funny and relaxed when the cameras aren’t rolling; incredibly serious WATCHING about her work the second shooting starts. In David Tennant, we found the perfect male counterpart: an extra ordinary actor, THE DETECTIVES also capable of the switch from emotion to ITV’s atmospheric crime dramaBroadchurch humour in the blink of an eye. They both possess such humanity, empathy and returns for a second series in January.warmth, as actors and as people.     Doctor Who and the politics of casting Lorna Jowett, University of Northampton Abstract: This article argues that while long-running science fiction series Doctor Who (1963-89; 1996; 2005-) has started to address a lack of diversity in its casting, there are still significant imbalances. Characters appearing in single episodes are more likely to be colourblind cast than recurring and major characters, particularly the title character. This is problematic for the BBC as a public service broadcaster but is also indicative of larger inequalities in the television industry. Examining various examples of actors cast in Doctor Who, including Pearl Mackie who plays companion Bill Potts, the article argues that while steady progress is being made – in the series and in the industry – colourblind casting often comes into tension with commercial interests and more risk-averse decision-making. Investigating sound: Visual and aural style from Broadchurch to Gracepoint AMANDA KEELER: Marquette University ABSTRACT Using Broadchurch and its American version Gracepoint as a case study, this article explores the aesthetic relationship between these two television programmes through an analysis of their visual and aural styles. The increasing proliferation of television-to-television adaptations and remakes necessitates revisiting the terminology to assess how it accommodates methodological approaches that extend beyond cross-cultural analyses. As narrative content and style are inextricably connected, this article attends to the complexity of employing existing terms to analyse the new version of a programme that simultaneously replicates and departs from the style and tone of its predecessor.
