Monday, August 10, 2009 11 Honorable Miss – Continued from page 10 different track and her first time over it. The rail seemed to be pretty good today as well. That other filly was game and didn’t want to stop, but when I called on my filly she was there for me and took off.” Game Face broke her maiden in her third start as a 2-year-old and took a pair of Grade III races as a sophomore: ’s Old Hat and Churchill Downs’ La Troienne. Pletcher gave her a shot at her first Grade I in June, Belmont Park’s prestigious Acorn Stakes, but Game Face found the 1-mile dis- tance a bit too far and she checked in third of four behind Zaftig and champion Indian Blessing. After a brief freshening, she returned in November to take a Churchill allowance to set her up for 2009. Game Face began her 4-year-old campaign at Gulfstream, winning the Grade III First Lady and the Grade II Inside Infor- mation. She disappointed in her next two, including the Grade I Humana Distaff on Derby Day but finally got her due in the Rooney, when she partnered with Prado for the first time. Game Face stalked in fourth, moved willingly to the lead and overpow- ered Keep The Peace en route to a 6 3/4-length score. For Pletcher, it wasn’t quite as simple as sending out the fa- vorite in another Saratoga stakes. He had Game Face trained to the second for the Rooney and she responded with a career run that was so compelling it was only natural to wonder how she would come out of the race. Wheeling back on 29 days off such a performance – in a Saratoga Grade II, no less – isn’t quite as easy as the tote board tells you it is. “Any time you ship to Calder in the middle of the summer and run such a big race you run the risk of regressing. The heat down there, the ship, it can be hard on a horse,” Pletcher said. “But the filly kind of told us in her training that she came out of it well enough to point to this spot. We felt she was doing well and that 6 furlongs was her best distance so we decided to take advantage of it.” Prado also knew the potential pitfalls that can result from a trip to South Florida, but admitted it never factored into the Honorable Miss equation. “We got along great at Calder. She was so comfortable, I didn’t even have to hit her down there,” Prado said. “And that’s why coming here today I was extremely confident with her. She’s beautiful. A real treat to ride.” Tod Marks Game Face draws off to win the Honorable Miss.

Pride, Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning Jr. and Direc- tor of Marketing Terence Collier flew to England for the Royal Ascot meeting in June and spent time encouraging own- ers from Dubai and nearby countries to come to Saratoga. “We had good conversations and we’re optimistic that some of them may at least have representatives at the sale. I wouldn’t want to say they will be there directly, but if they have representatives of their operations there, that would be good enough for us,” Pride said. To entice some buyers from abroad, Fasig-Tipton has offered to help with flights and accommodations. “We have proactively tried to re- introduce the Saratoga sale to buyers that don’t ordinarily attend,” Pride explained, adding that many have ac- cepted offers of assistance. “It’s our way of just trying to say, ‘Please consider it, take a hard look at the catalogue, and if there is an interest in attending, we’d love to try to help you with the arrange- ments.’ ” Fasig-Tipton executives analyzed last year’s Saratoga results and found just a Tod Marks See sales page 26 Hip 79 rears outside of the shedrow on Sunday morning.

The inaugural Fasig-Tipton Festival of Racing kicked off on Saturday with dramatic runnings of the Whitney Handicap and the Test Stakes and the inaugural running of the John Hettinger Stakes. Sunday, the Vanderbilt, the Honorable Miss and the Finney Stakes followed the theme – great racing in an unmatched setting. Bobby Flay, the chef, took over for Tom Durkin in the announcer’s booth. Today, it’s the first night of the Select Sales. Cue the fireworks. Who is the best yearling you have ever seen? (Part II)
