As Douglas looks out the window, the small town of Green Town, Illinois awakens, and Doug is filled with the joy of being alive. And so begins the summer of 1928 as re- imagined by Ray Bradbury in his novel Dandelion Wine, a rich, evocative tale of a summer long past and its memories, joys, and frustrations. The central metaphor of the novel is the creation of Dandelion Wine, which becomes a distillation of the summer's days and may be reopened and revisited during the bleak winter months to come. Throughout the summer, Douglas and his brother, Tom, also record, in a notepad, specific incidents and lessons learned. One of the first lessons Douglas learns is that adults and children are different species. The brothers also come to the conclusion that old people were never children. But while the summer seems idyllic, darker things, such as change and death, lurk in the background. Douglas is exposed to these through a series of events that include the loss of best friend (who moves away) and the death of his great-grandmother. The ravine and a serial killer called the "Lonely One" are embodiments of the fear of death and change. As a result of these events, Douglas falls into a fever, but is saved by the town's junk man, Mr. Jonas, who gives the boy two bottles of pure winter air, which break the fever.

By writing a draft in a day I have a story with a skin around it.” Ray Bradbury’s creative coda originated long before he fashioned this concise version of it for his December 1964 Show magazine interview. His daily writing habit had become a quotidian fever by the early 1940s, and he soon learned to avoid interruptions from any other voices—including his own rational judgments. Background of the Study Literature is interesting to be learned because of three following reasons. First, literature can entertain. It can make the readers get pleasure and feel happy. Second, literature is a part of life; it can make the readers learn about the culture, costumes, value, religion and history of the story taking place. And the last reason is literature can teach and improve the reader’ knowledge (Roberts and Jacob 1989:19). Roberts and Jacob (1989:21) argue that literature can also help people grow into the broader cultural, philosophic and religious world and to recognize human dreams and struggles in order to develop mature sensitivity. Literature such as a poem, play or any other piece of writing is a crafted thing which also offers the reader an imaginative experience (Woolfe and Hampton 1984:1). Literature is like a mirror of life and reflection of human life. Most of what the author writes in literature happens in the real life. When the readers read literature such as poem, play, novel or any other piece of writing with interest, there is a point at which the readers become totally immersed in literature, but when the readers have finished reading a poem or play or novel, or any other piece of writing, the readers can go back through the work/ the real life and see how each part, language, characterization, plot, personality, history, the way to solve the problem, etc, give the readers impact to the real life (Woolfe and Hampton 1984:1).

His shockingly prophetic dystopian work Fahrenheit 451 (1953) has been highly praised for its stance against censorship and its defense of literature as necessary to civilization. SECTION SUMMARY 2 RAY BRADBURY 1920: he was born in Waukegan, Illinois, and always maintained strong ties to his small-town upbringing. As a child, he loved horror films such as The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and enjoyed immensely the first science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories. 1932: he had an encounter with a carnival magician which sparked his writing life. Wreathed in static electricity Mr. Electrico touched him on the nose with his energy- charged sword, and said, “Live forever!” Bradbury later said, “I decided that it was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day and never stopped.” 4 RAY BRADBURY 1934: his family moved to Los Angeles and in 1937 he joined the Los Angeles Science Fiction League. 1939: he published his own “fanzine”, Futuria Fantasia, making his first sale to a professional science fiction magazine in 1941 with his short story Pendulum.
