Reading Guide Dandelion Wine By Ray Bradbury ISBN: 9780380977260 Introduction Twelve-year-old Douglas Spaulding arises on an early June morning in a small bedroom in the cupola of his grandparents' house. As Douglas looks out the window, the small town of Green Town, Illinois awakens, and Doug is filled with the joy of being alive. And so begins the summer of 1928 as re- imagined by Ray Bradbury in his novel Dandelion Wine, a rich, evocative tale of a summer long past and its memories, joys, and frustrations. The central metaphor of the novel is the creation of Dandelion Wine, which becomes a distillation of the summer's days and may be reopened and revisited during the bleak winter months to come. Throughout the summer, Douglas and his brother, Tom, also record, in a notepad, specific incidents and lessons learned. One of the first lessons Douglas learns is that adults and children are different species. The brothers also come to the conclusion that old people were never children. But while the summer seems idyllic, darker things, such as change and death, lurk in the background. Douglas is exposed to these through a series of events that include the loss of best friend (who moves away) and the death of his great-grandmother. The ravine and a serial killer called the "Lonely One" are embodiments of the fear of death and change. As a result of these events, Douglas falls into a fever, but is saved by the town's junk man, Mr. Jonas, who gives the boy two bottles of pure winter air, which break the fever. -

A NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ray Bradbury has published some twenty-seven books—novels, stories, plays, essays, and poems—since his first story appeared when he was twenty years old. He began writing for the movies in 1952—with the script for his own Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. The next year he wrote the screenplays for It Came from Outer Space and Moby Dick. And in 1961 he wrote Orson Welles's narration for King of Kings. Films have been made of his "The Picasso Summer," The Illustrated Man, Fahrenheit 451, The Mar- tian Chronicles, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, and the short animated film Icarus Montgolfier Wright, based on his story of the history of flight, was nominated for an Academy Award. By writing a draft in a day I have a story with a skin around it.” Ray Bradbury’s creative coda originated long before he fashioned this concise version of it for his December 1964 Show magazine interview. His daily writing habit had become a quotidian fever by the early 1940s, and he soon learned to avoid interruptions from any other voices—including his own rational judgments. Each day became a race between subconscious inspiration and the stifling effects of his own self-conscious thoughts—the more logical thought patterns that he desperately tried to hold at bay during the few hours it would take him to complete an initial draft. Bradbury was convinced that the magic would dissolve away if he failed to carry through on a story idea or an opening page at first sitting, and it’s not surprising that his Show interview coda came with a cautionary corollary: “If one waits overnight to finish a story, quite often the texture one gets the next day is different. -

You are about to read one of the most popular_and thought-provoking_stories about time travel ever written. LITERARY FOCUS: STYLE AND MOOD A writer’s diction, or word choice, greatly defines a work’s style. Style is also determined by sentence length and complexity. A story that is written in brief simple sentences, for example, is different in style from a story written in long complex sentences. See below: Style: Simple Style: More Complex The sun rose. The air was warm, “It was Miss Murdstone who was my coffee was hot. Nothing arrived, and a gloomy-looking lady stirred. Nothing breathed except she was: dark, like her brother, for the lizard. Beyond Philology No. 14/3, 2017 ISSN 1732-1220, eISSN 2451-1498 The world of childhood in Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man KAROL CHOJNOWSKI Received 3.04.2017, accepted 21.09.2017. Abstract This article is devoted to an analysis of the motif of childhood in The Illustrated Man, a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury. The particular focus is on the initial story, “The Veldt,” and the last two stories, “Zero Hour” and “The Rocket.” The article interprets imagina- tion as a distinguishing feature of children’s world, as opposed to the world of adults, characterised by logic and lack of imagination. This difference, the article claims, results in a clash of the two worlds. The article also analyses Bradbury’s negative view of technology ex- pressed in the stories, with its addictive and destructive potential, as well as technology’s relationship to imagination. Another object of analysis is the ways Bradbury suggests to reconcile the worlds of children and adults and to avoid technology’s pernicious effects. The article also aims to analyse the way in which the intertextual frame- work contributes to these themes and to interpret the meaning of the arrangement of the stories within the volume. Neureuther Competition 2011 Tanya Roth No Mere Reader: A Collection of Memories It is almost fall at home in Utah, but in southern California, mid-September is still warm and full of sunshine. I am eight years old, gangly already, and incessantly curious about the world around me. I am particularly curious of the room in Grandpa’s house in California, a room off- limits to children like me on previous visits – but not this time. This time, I enter the room – and I am amazed: books surround me, more books than I have seen anywhere outside of a library. Big books, small books, books of all colors; very old books, and very new books. Dad tells me these were Grandpa’s books. Were, and always will be, in some way: after we bury Grandpa’s ashes, the books come home with us to stay. -
