Temporary Gallery THROUGH THE STARGATE John & James Whitney 16 Sept – 12 Nov 2017 Opening: Fri 15 Sept, 7 pm John Whitney, Experiments in Motion Graphics, 1968. Courtesy: Whitney Editions TM, Los Angeles Press release date: 7 September 2017 press contact: Baptist Ohrtmann, [email protected] Temporary Gallery THROUGH THE STARGATE John & James Whitney Curated by Regina Barunke John Whitney (Pasadena, California 1917–1995 Los Angeles) and his brother James (1921– 1982) were two of the most influential pioneers of early computer films and cybernetic cinema. In the 1940s, they jointly experimented in the field of ‘non-objective film’ and participated in the American West Coast avant-garde art scene. Looking for new forms of audiovisual expression, they were inspired by early 20th century music to construct a sound- generating device to accompany the abstract and geometric shapes in their early films. In the 1950s, while James was increasingly engaged with meditative and psychedelic perception enhancement in film, John bought surplus anti-aircraft technology from World War II to construct his own ‘cam machine’ creating the first computer-based animations. With that, he not only gained attention from the film industry and directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick but also of a whole generation of experimental filmmakers. With the help of Johns machine James created the masterpiece "Lapis" in the years 1963-1966 - a ten- minute animation of hand-drawn graphics, which move kaleidoscope-like to Indian Sitar music. In the meantime, John is experimenting with the possibilities of generating perceptual sensations through the kinetic rhythms of moving points, which have a strong analogy to the modulations of a musical tension. -

Stepping out and passing through the pillared porticoes was a Who's Who of Swiss society-the head of state, national sports icons, former ministers and army generals-all of whom had come to celebrate the sixty-fifth birthday of Werner Spross, the owner of a huge horticultural business empire. As one of Zurich's wealthiest and best-connected men, it was perhaps fitting that 650 of his "close friends" had been invited to attend the event, a lavish banquet followed by a performance of Romeo and Juliet. Defiantly greeting the guests were 200 demonstrators standing in the square in front of the opera house. Mostly young, wearing scruffy clothes and sporting punky haircuts, they whistled and booed, angry that the opera house had been sold out, allowing itself for the first time to be taken over by a rich patron. They were also chanting slogans about the inequity of Swiss society and the wealth of Spross's guests. The glittering horde did its very best to ignore the disturbance. The protest had the added significance of being held on the tenth anniversary of the first spark of the city's most explosive youth revolt of recent years, The Movement. -
The Style of Video Games Graphics: Analyzing the Functions of Visual Styles in Storytelling and Gameplay in Video Games
The Style of Video Games Graphics: Analyzing the Functions of Visual Styles in Storytelling and Gameplay in Video Games by Yin Wu B.A., (New Media Arts, SIAT) Simon Fraser University, 2008 Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology Yin Wu 2012 SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY Fall 2012 Approval Name: Yin Wu Degree: Master of Arts Title of Thesis: The Style of Video Games Graphics: Analyzing the Functions of Visual Styles in Storytelling and Gameplay in Video Games Examining Committee: Chair: Carman Neustaedter Assistant Professor School of Interactive Arts & Technology Simon Fraser University Jim Bizzocchi, Senior Supervisor Associate Professor School of Interactive Arts & Technology Simon Fraser University Steve DiPaola, Supervisor Associate Professor School of Interactive Arts & Technology Simon Fraser University Thecla Schiphorst, External Examiner Associate Professor School of Interactive Arts & Technology Simon Fraser University Date Defended/Approved: October 09, 2012 ii Partial Copyright Licence iii Abstract Every video game has a distinct visual style however the functions of visual style in game graphics have rarely been investigated in terms of medium-specific design decisions. This thesis suggests that visual style in a video game shapes players’ gaming experience in terms of three salient dimensions: narrative pleasure, ludic challenge, and aesthetic reward. The thesis first develops a context based on the fields of aesthetics, art history, visual psychology, narrative studies and new media studies. Next it builds an analytical framework with two visual styles categories containing six separate modes. This research uses examples drawn from 29 games to illustrate and to instantiate the categories and the modes. -

Animated Stereotypes –
Animated Stereotypes – An Analysis of Disney’s Contemporary Portrayals of Race and Ethnicity Alexander Lindgren, 36761 Pro gradu-avhandling i engelska språket och litteraturen Handledare: Jason Finch Fakulteten för humaniora, psykologi och teologi Åbo Akademi 2020 ÅBO AKADEMI – FACULTY OF ARTS, PSYCHOLOGY AND THEOLOGY Abstract for Master’s Thesis Subject: English Language and Literature Author: Alexander Lindgren Title: Animated Stereotypes – An Analysis of Disney’s Contemporary Portrayals of Race and Ethnicity Supervisor: Jason Finch Abstract: Walt Disney Animation Studios is currently one of the world’s largest producers of animated content aimed at children. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes. -
Considerations for a Study of a Musical Instrumentality in the Gameplay of Video Games
Playing in 7D: Considerations for a study of a musical instrumentality in the gameplay of video games Pedro Cardoso, Miguel Carvalhais ID+, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal [email protected] / [email protected] Abstract. The intersection between music and video games has been of increased interest in academic and in commercial grounds, with many video games classified as ‘musical’ having been released over the past years. The purpose of this paper is to explore some fundamental concerns regarding the instrumentality of video games, in the sense that the game player plays the game as a musical or sonic instrument, an act in which the game player becomes a musical performer. We define the relationship between the player and the game system (the musical instrument) to be action- based. We then propose that the seven discerned dimensions we found to govern that relationship to also be a source of instrumentality in video games. Something that not only will raise a deeper understanding of musical video games but also on how the actions of the player are actually embed in the generation and performance of music, which, in some cases, can be transposed to other interactive artefacts. In this paper we aim at setting up the grounds for discussing and further develop our studies of action in video games intersecting it with that of musical performance, an effort that asks for multidisciplinary research in musicology, sound studies and game design. Keywords: Action, Gameplay, Music, Sound, Video games. Introduction Music and games are no exception when it comes to the ubiquity of computational systems in contemporary society. -

(Head of Department) Signature Date CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Background to the study Traditional wall painting is an old art practiced in many different parts of the world. This art form has existed since pre-historic times according to (Skira, 1950) and (Kissick, 1993). In Africa, cave paintings exist in many countries such as “Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Zimbabwe and South Africa”, (Wilcox, 1984). Traditional wall painting mostly by women can be found in many parts of Africa including Ghana, Southern Africa and Nigeria. These paintings are done mostly to enhance the appearance of the buildings and also serve other purposes as well. “Wall painting has been practiced in Northern Ghana for centuries after the collapse of the Songhai Empire,” (Ross and Cole, 1977). -

Rendering Hypercomplex Fractals by Anthony Atella An Honors Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Honors in The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science The School of Arts and Sciences Rhode Island College 2018 Abstract Fractal mathematics and geometry are useful for applications in science, engineering, and art, but acquiring the tools to explore and graph fractals can be frustrating. Tools available online have limited fractals, rendering methods, and shaders. They often fail to abstract these concepts in a reusable way. This means that multiple programs and interfaces must be learned and used to fully explore the topic. Chaos is an abstract fractal geometry rendering program created to solve this problem. This application builds off previous work done by myself and others [1] to create an extensible, abstract solution to rendering fractals. This paper covers what fractals are, how they are rendered and colored, implementation, issues that were encountered, and finally planned future improvements. -
