April 30: Government sources in Guatemala City reported a clash between rebels and a military patrol in Amachel, El Quiche department. Three soldiers and one civilian were killed, and three soldiers wounded. May 2: According to daily newspaper El Grafico, the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG) was responsible for an April 27 dynamite attack on a hotel in Fray Bartolome de las Casas, . Government officials reported that rebels dynamited a segment of Rubelsanto oil pipeline located between the towns of and Sebol, Alta Verapaz department. The explosion caused a major fire. Rebels sabotaged the pipeline on at least nine previous occasions. May 13: Army sources reported that soldiers dismantled a rebel camp used as a hospital in . In a press communique, the URNG said government troops suffered 24 casualties in fighting near Volcan de Agua, located 50 km. south of Guatemala City. In addition, said the communique, rebels shelled a military post in . May 14: Police reported confiscation of a weapons cache and military uniforms at a private home in the capital. Guatemalan Carlos Rodolfo Paiz was arrested. The cache included two pistols, a revolver, three rifles with telescopic sights, a 12-gauge shotgun, several fragmentation grenades, and a large quantity of ammunition.
