Gatten This bibliography updates two extensive works designed to include comprehensively all significant works by and about Woody Guthrie. Richard A. Reuss published A Woody Guthrie Bibliography, 1912–1967 in 1968 and Jeffrey N. Gatten’s article “Woody Guthrie: A Bibliographic Update, 1968–1986” appeared in 1988. With this current article, researchers need only utilize these three bibliographies to identify all English- language items of relevance related to, or written by, Guthrie. Introduction Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (1912–67) was a singer, musician, composer, author, artist, radio personality, columnist, activist, and philosopher. By now, most anyone with interest knows the shorthand version of his biography: refugee from the Oklahoma dust bowl, California radio show performer, New York City socialist, musical documentarian of the Northwest, merchant marine, and finally decline and death from Huntington’s chorea. -

“Talking Union”--The Almanac Singers (1941) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Cesare Civetta (guest post)* 78rpm album package Pete Seeger, known as the “Father of American Folk music,” had a difficult time of it as a young, budding singer. While serving in the US Army during World War II, he wrote to his wife, Toshi, “Every song I started to write and gave up was a failure. I started to paint because I failed to get a job as a journalist. I started singing and playing more because I was a failure as a painter. I went into the army because I was having more and more failure musically.” But he practiced his banjo for hours and hours each day, usually starting as soon as he woke in the morning, and became a virtuoso on the instrument, and even went on to invent the “long-neck banjo.” The origin of the Almanacs Singers’ name, according to Lee Hays, is that every farmer's home contains at least two books: the Bible, and the Almanac! The Almanacs Singers’ first job was a lunch performance at the Jade Mountain Restaurant in New York in December of 1940 where they were paid $2.50! The original members of the group were Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Millard Campbell, John Peter Hawes, and later Woody Guthrie. Initially, Seeger used the name Pete Bowers because his dad was then working for the US government and he could have lost his job due to his son’s left-leaning politically charged music. The Singers sang anti-war songs, songs about the draft, and songs about President Roosevelt, frequently attacking him. -

Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLII, Number 1 Fall 2012 Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan Hit Manhattan By Sean Wilentz, Princeton University Editors Note: This paper was delivered as the keynote address for the Woody Guthrie Centennial Conference held at Brooklyn College on 22 September, 2012. On February 16, 1940, a freezing blizzardy day, Woody Guthrie—short, intense, and aged twenty-seven—ended a long hitchhiking journey East and debarked in Manhattan, where he would quickly make a name for himself as a per- former and recording artist. Nearly twenty-one years later, on or about January 24, 1961, a cold and post-blizzardy day, Bob Dylan—short, intense, and aged nineteen—ended a briefer auto journey East and debarked in Manhattan, where he would quickly make a name for himself as a performer and recording artist—not as quickly as Guthrie had, but quickly. Dylan had turned himself into what he later described as “a Woody Guthrie jukebox,” and had come to New York in search of his idol. Guthrie had come to look up his friends the actors Will Geer and Herta Ware, who had introduced him to influential left-wing political and artistic circles out in Los Angeles and would do the same in Manhattan. Two different stories, obviously, of two very different young men a generation apart—yet, more than he might have realized, Dylan partly replayed his hero’s entrance to the city where both men would become legends. -

ii WOODY GUTHRIE THIS COLLECTION PRESENTS FOR THE FIRST TIME the full range of material Woody Guthrie recorded for the United States government, both in song and the spoken word. This publication brings together two significant bodies of work – the songs and stories he recorded for the Library of Congress, and the material he created when hired to write songs for the Bonneville Power Administration. There have been records released in the past of the Library of Congress recordings, but this collection is the first time that the complete and unedited Library of Congress sessions have been released. The songs from those recording dates have been available in the past – notably from Elektra and from Rounder – but we offer here the full body of work, including the hours of Woody Guthrie talking and telling his story. TO THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND BPA RECORDINGS, we have also added material which Woody recorded for governmental or quasi-governmental efforts – some songs and two 15-minute radio dramas for the Office of War Information during the Second World War and another drama offered to public health agencies to fight the spread of venereal disease. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLII, Number 1 Fall 2012 Guthrie Centennial Scholarship: Ruminating on Woody at 100 By Ray Allen There is certainly no dearth of information on America’s most heralded folk singer, Woodrow Wilson Guthrie. Serious students of folk music are familiar with the wealth of published materials devoted to his life and music that have ap- peared over the past two decades. Ed Cray’s superb biography, Ramblin’s Man: The Life and Times of Woody Guthrie (W.W. Norton, 2004) provides an essential road map. Mark Allan Jackson’s Prophet Singer; The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie (University of Mississippi Press, 2007) moves deeper into the songs, while Robert Santelli and Em- ily Davidson’s edited volume, Hard Travelin’: The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie (Wesleyan University Press, 1999), explores his myriad contributions as a song writer, journalist, and political activist. Guthrie’s recordings abound. His seminal Dust Bowl Ballads collection, originally recorded in April of 1940 for RCA Victor, has been reissued nu- merous times, most recently in 2000 by Buddha Records. Rounder Records’ Woody Guthrie: Library of Congress Recordings, featuring highlights from the hours of singing and storytelling Guthrie recorded for Alan Lomax in March of 1940, was released in 1992. Smithsonian Folkways has produced over a dozen Guthrie compilations, most notably Woody Guthrie: The Asch Recordings, Volumes 1-4, a four CD set which brings together the best of his mid-1940s work with Moe Asch. -

In many ways, Pete Seeger’s life echoes one of his most loved songs and stories, that of “Abiyoyo,” as the townspeople grow to realize they need the hero to slay the giants. “They needed his integrity and his ability to tell inconvenient truths. They needed him to do what he had been doing all along—singing about freedom and justice.” (pg. 83) “Throughout his life Pete Seeger remained committed to the idea that people need to come together. “It’s been my life’s work, to get participation, whether it’s a union song, a peace song, civil rights, or women’s movement, or gay liberation. -
