VR is a medium that strongly affects the body, and due to its medium specificity, creates an experience of place illusion (Slater, 2009) that poses unique challenges for the environment designer. The study develops a sensorimotor framework for the underlying rules of perception, or sensorimotor contingencies, and the basic parameters, or sensorimotor affordances, of VR environments. It integrates the framework with a model of perceptual design (Ward, 2015), by describing how environmental affordances create information, simulation and spatial-temporal structuring in VR environments. The study shows that the framework can be used to plan and analyse different types of complex VR environments, both for scientific purposes and for day-to-day design decision. It can help to clarify research questions, and integrate existing and future research on VR environments. Introduction While real-time rendered Virtual Reality (VR) technology has been used in research labs for several decades, it has only been available as a mass medium since the introduction of consumer market headsets such as the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive in 2015. In research applications, the role of VR environments is often purely functional, posing few problems for the designer. But in commercial applications, be they product simulations, computer games or even scientific visualisations for a larger audience, questions of realism, quality and style become salient. Real-time rendered VR has a strong impact on perception and physiological processes. Even early demos for the Oculus Rift Developer Kit (DK2), such as the Rollercoaster Demo affected user balance. The impact is explained by the fact that VR environments create “presence” or “place illusion” (Slater,

    3D Disneyland: A Primer By David A. Bossert (3D Disneyland: Like You’ve Never Seen It Before with a sampling of some of the pages from the book. The Old Mill Press, 2020.) My first introduction, like many I’m sure, to Stereoscopic or 3D photography was through a GAF Viewmaster when I was about twelve-years-old. That red and white plastic viewer transported me to far-off places allowing me to see the wonders of the world in glorious three- dimensional space. At the time, it was the closest I could get to being there in person. The Viewmaster took those enchanting places and magnificent, one-of-a-kind landmarks like Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower beyond the flat, two-dimensional picture in a book or magazine and brought them to life. Dropping a round disc, containing seven pairs of photos, into that handheld viewer turned my bedroom into a global sightseeing tour, and it was thrilling. That small plastic device, some called a toy, opened up a whole new world for me. The most fascinating part was the simple science behind replicating how we see everything around us. Stereoscopic or 3D photography has been around since the invention of the camera and film. By the 1850s, stereoscopic images were on display in many middle-class homes. As photography matured and became more accessible to the masses, stereo photography grew in popularity. Although stereo photography has gone in and out of favor, it has always been a specialized part of photography for the professional and a luxury for the hobbyist.

    Walt Disney, the 1964-65 World's Fair, and the Emergence of Audio-Animatronics An Honors Thesis (HONR 499) by Stephanie Sink Ball State University Muncie, Indiana March 2015 Expected Date of Graduation May 2015 2 Abstract The World's Fair of 1964/65 held in Flushing Meadows, New York was a fascinating event when ideas and technology were brought together in a world showcase. With company sponsorships from corporations represented at the fair, the Disney Company was able to research and experiment with new technologies that, in turn, transformed the modern amusement park. Disney greatly influenced the World's Fair, and the World's Fair greatly influenced the Disney Company. Audio-animatronics technology was perfected during the Fair, and has now become a staple of the modern amusement park. The attractions that Disney created for the World's Fair were incorporated into both Disneyland and later Disney World, and even helped shape EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community ofTomorrow) Center. The World's Fair of 1964-65 provided an unprecedented opportunity to develop new technology at little or no cost to the Disney Company. Baxter, Walt Disney Imagineering’s Senior Vice President of Creative Development, knew he needed to base the roller coaster on an Old West theme. The Magic Kingdom, Disneyland’s younger sibling in Florida, was developing a ride using the landscape of Utah’s Monument Valley. “I went to National Geographic [Magazine], as we always do, to look for something else,” he says. “And I found a feature article on Bryce Canyon in Utah.” What he found within the piece—which might have been William Belknap Jr.’s 1958 article “Nature Carves Fantasies in Bryce Canyon” or Ralph Gray’s 1964 article “Sea to Shining Mountains”—was a fanciful national park that seemed to be a perfect model for the ride he was designing as Disneyland’s Chief Designer in the late 1970s. “The first paragraph of that article says, ‘When you come upon Bryce Canyon, you are going to be astounded to find something that looks like it was created by Walt Disney,’” Baxter says.
