1 SURANA COLLEGE #16, South End Road, Bengaluru-04 ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15 After a successful adni "Swagath", the degree managing trustee, Smt. Ar essful admission process the academic year 2014-15 began on an auspicious note with the degree induction programme. The occasion was marked by the presence of the trustee, Smt. Archana Surana and Principal Dr. B. S. Srikanta. The Chief Guest for the day Brigadier Arun who enthralled the audience with his energy and positive attitude. Achievers in academics and extra- curricular activities were awarded during the program. CULTURAL ACTIVITIES The Cultural Committee's calendar began with the Independence Day Celebration. The flag was hoisted by Nadoja Dr. Chidananda Murthy, eminent Kannada poet. Shri Dilip Surana, Chairman, MicroLabs & Smt. Archana Surana, Managining Trustee, who also presented awards to NSS volunteers and our own Yoga Expert, a student from I yr B.Com, Rajeshachari. Anveshana, the college Freshers day was celebrated to welcome the new entrants and to give them an opportunity to display their talent in different fields such as singing, dancing as well as general knowledge. Saraswathi Pooja was performed to invoke the blessings of the goddess of learning by the students. staffand the management. Varnothsava, our college's annual cultural fest was conducted with much fanfare. This year's theme was state festivals. The states chosen were Rajasthan, West Bengal, Maharastra and Karnataka (Dakshina Kannada). The chief guests were eminent personalities from the fields of cinema and theatre Shri Sanchaya Ganesh and Shri Anand Sabhapathy. Paraspara, the annual event for all faculty members of Surana College was conducted over a span of three exciting days with creative competitions that got all the faculty members on their toes. There were six groups named after the six seasons and the activities conducted this year were Quiz on Karnataka, Medley Relay event, Group Song, Tug of War and many others. Parva, the college Annual Day was a celebration of academic, co-curricular and extra- curricular success combined with an electrifying cultural extravaganza. The prices on the ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 2 SURANA COLLEGE #16, South End Road, Bengaluru-04 occasion were given away by the chief guest Shri Dhananjaya, Kannada Film Star and the Principals of Surana Group of Institutions. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Dr. Anuradha Roy, HOD, Department of English, Seshadripuram College conducted a workshop on "Understanding Verbal Ability Tests' for all final year students. An inter-collegiate, inter-disciplinary paper presentation seminar was organized jointly by the Departments of English and Psychology titled "Literary Analysis of Psychological Concepts: An Inter-disciplinary Approach" where two groups of our students presented papers . The department also conducted various competitions and other activities including the Wallmag. film screening and theatre visits for the students. DEPARTMENT OF HINDI The department activities included celebrating 'Hindi Day' and a guest lecture on 'Drama in Hindi Sahitya' by Dr. Vinay Kumar Yadav, which also included an interclass competition. Dr. Basavaraju presented a paper in National level Seminar at Maharaja college, Mysore. DEPARTMENT OF SANSKRIT The department of Sanskrit celebrated "Sanskrit Day". Dr. Vydehi participated in a workshop on "Revised Syllabus of Uundergraduate Courses' held at Vijaya College. Dr. Nagaratna Hegde presented a paper on "Upanishadi kaavyasoundaryam" at ISKCON Temple and recited self-composed poetry at the "Gandhi Smrithi Samskrit Kavi Sangama" organised by Karnataka Sanskrit University and also at the All India Women Writers' Meet" that was organised in Bhopal. DEPARTMENT OF KANNADA Dr Baragur Ramchandrappa inaugurated 'Kannada Sambhrama Sangha' for the annual year on the occasion of Guruvandane (Teachers Day). He was felicitated in the presence of Sri Pichalli Srinivas, Chairman of the Kamataka Janapada Academy. ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 3 SURANA COLLEGE #16, South End Road, Bengaluru-04 'Computer mathu Kannada' An Introductory textbook on computers in Kannada published by the department in association with Mitramaadhyama Academy was released by Sri Raghu Dixit renowned musician. Dr Vishala Varanashi along with 2 students, participated in "Ninasam Samskrithi Shibira" an annual academic meet organized in Heggodu. Dr Sumatindra Nadiga's "Aakantha Lokantha" was released by Dr. Mallepuram Venkatesh in the presence of Prof. CN Ramchandran and MLC Sri DS Veeraiah. A guest lecture by Sri Sathyesh N Bellur on 'Change Management was also organised by the dept. The department has organised the release function of Sundara Prakashana's books authored by Dr. Basavaraja Sabarada, Sri C.V. Shivashankar & Sri. Gowri Sundar and Hemantha Prakashana's book authored by Shri Beluru Rammurthy. DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCES Apart from field visits to Lalbagh and GKVK Microbiology Lab, the department of Botany conducted inter-class cooking without fire and chart making competitions. The Department of Biotech also conducted an inter-collegiate TECHZONE-MODEL MAKING competition. The Department also supported various project such as "Extraction of proteins by salt and solvent method of leaf and fruit of Terminalia cattappa" done by final year students, "Isolation of DNA from Human Blood cells by using Agarose gel electrophoresis" and "Isolation and comparison of DNA from Lake water bacteria with known strains using Agarose Gel Electrophoresis done by graduating students. The dept. of Chemistry organized a visit to GKVK Microbiology lab and conducted a model making, crossword competitions and an IQ test for the students. The dept. of Physics organized an Educational visit to The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium and guest lecturers on "Stellar Evolution" by Mrs. Shylaja. Director, and Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium Another guest lecture on "Research for God's particle: Present Experiments at CERN" by Dr. G. Venkatesh, Professor of Physics was also organised. The Department of Mathematics conducted a Guest lecture on Mathematical Modeling by Dr S. Pranesh which focused on the Application of Mathematics in real Life. The department conducted inter-class General Aptitude test and Dumb Charades for all the students. ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 4 SURANA COLLEGE #16, South End Road, Bengaluru-04 HUMANITIES Department of Journalism The department activities included Field Visits to Sri Siddhartha Media Center and Community Radio Station; TV Studio at Tumkur; Press Club; Vidhan Soudha;_Movie Screening. As promotional activity organised an Orientation Programme by Popular Radio Jockey Mr. Guru Prasad for the II PUC. The Guest Lecture and promotional activity by Mr. Naveen Ammemmbala, Chief Reporter of DNA newspaper and weekly updation of Wall Magazine the "Reporters Desk are few of the highlighting activities of the dept. The department also released its first issue of the college newsletter SURANATIMES. Various internships were organised for the students in media outlets such as Vijayavani Newspaper and Janashri News channel. Department of History Apart from regular annual activities, the department organised a historical field visit to Lepakshi and Vidurashwatha. Department of Psychology The Ingitha Club organised activities such as Film screening, Interclass competitions, Wallmag editions and Walkathon in association with Youth-Pro volunteers of the positive psychology unit of NIMHANS, to spread awareness about positive mental health. Interdisciplinary seminar on "Literary Analysis of Psychological Concepts: An Interdisciplinary Approach" was conducted as an inter-collegiate paper presentation seminar. One student paper is slated for publication in the conference journal of St. Anne's College. The final year students completed Internship programmes at Manasa Neuropsychiatric Hospital and Cadabams Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center. Department of Political Science The department screened various important films on political and social issues and celebrated the birth anniversary of Nelson Mendela. ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 5 SURANA COLLEGE #16, South End Road, Bengaluru-04 A seminar on 'Indian Constitution', RTI and Human Rights was also organised by the department. Department of Economics Inter-class competitions were conducted on account of "World population Day". A Guest lecture by Prof R. Shashi Kumar, Associate Professor, Bangalore University delivered a speech on "Globalization & its impact on foreign trade in India". Other activities of the department include an industrial visit to the Karnataka Milk Federation, interclass currency competition and jewellery making workshop in association with the Entrepreneurs Development Programme Cell of the college. Department of Tourism Departmental Activities included orientation program for the first year students, Quiz competition and a Guest lecture on "Tourism and Community Development to commemorate World Tourism Day. A field visits was organized to "Travel and Tourism Fair" and a 4 days Educational Trip was organised to Munnar, Alappuzha, Kochin, and Wayanad to educate students about Tourism destination, Planning and Development. The dept also assisted students who intemed at various tourism related firms such as Thomas Cook KSTDC, Cox and Kings and Air India. DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE ESOTERIC the computer club was inaugurated by Dr Chandrasekhar, Consultant, Infosys. Events such as Memory Game, Pick n speak, Dumb Charades, Product launch, Collage, IT QUIZ, Group Discussion and IT Manager were
