His skills earned him a position as a professor of art at the University of Texas and commissions from many public and private institutions. His sculptures are created in various media, such as Lucite and steel. This exhibition of the California-based artist’s work presented thirty-seven of his sculptures. Barnes studied with Carl Milles (1875– 1955) at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. [File contents: exhibition flier] Color Compositions by June Wayne (March) June Wayne’s (1918–2011) work received publicity in an article by Jules Langsner, who praised her for developing techniques of drawing the viewer’s eye through imagery and producing a sense of movement in her subjects. Her more recent works (as presented in the show) were drawn from the dilemmas to be found in Franz Kafka’s works. For Rick Owens and his new furniture designs, these are the questions by ROBIN SAYERS Two otherworldly funerary images, both found in tales of eternal sleep interrupted, made indelible marks on wee Rick Owens’ psyche. “Sleeping Beauty’s glass coffin and Jesus’ empty tomb with the lid askew are my earliest memories linked to furniture,” says Owens. “I did go to Catholic school, but that’s still pretty ripe for analysis.” ADVERTISEMENT Given his fixation, it seems fitting that the fashion visionary would go with a sleep- centric theme for the latest exhibition of his furniture, Pavane for a Dead Princess. Dress to excess, as much as to impress, and let Dawnridge be your Utopia” - Tony Duquette AN AMERICAN DESIGN ICON Tony Duquette was a native of Los Angeles, California and an internationally acclaimed artist and designer. Considered by museums to be an American design icon, as a student, Duquette was awarded scholarships at both the prestigious Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and the Yale School of the Theatre. He began his career working in promotional advertising, creating special environments for the latest seasonal fashions. He also freelanced for well-known designers such as the legendary William Haines, James Pendleton and Adrian. In the early 1940’s, Duquette was discovered by Lady Elsie de Wolfe Mendl, the international arbiter of taste. Through the patronage of Sir Charles and Lady Mendl, Duquette was able to establish himself as one of the leading designers in Los Angeles, where he worked increasingly for the film industry, creating beautiful costumes and settings for many Metro Goldwyn Mayer productions under the auspices of the great producer, Arthur Freed and the celebrated director, Vincente Minnelli. After WWII, Duquette continued his works for private clients and for the theatre and motion pictures. In 1949 Duquette married the beautiful and talented artist Elizabeth Johnstone at a private ceremony at “Pickfair” with America’s Sweetheart, Mary Pickford attending as matron of honor and Academy Award winning actor, Buddy Rogers standing as Tony’s best man. The young couple, whose particular talents complimented each other’s, collaborated on many design commissions together and were sought out as an attractive addition to the Hollywood social scene.

As the architect was hailed as the “Father of Spanish Colonial Revival,” Gebhard describes how aged European structures influenced Smith’s signature designs. One of the first architects to gain inspiration from the scale, proportion, color, and texture of Spanish farmhouses, Smith tailored these attributes for the west coast, beginning with his own house in Montecito. Throughout this 192-page book—which also includes homes in other regions, such as Arizona, Texas, and Colorado—Gebhard surveys the work and the man who founded California’s distinct architectural style. Gebhard, the widow of the late David Gebhard, is a prolific writer in her own right who has published works on librarianship, architectural history and criticism, and a mystery novel titled Motives for Murder.
