2 UPCOMING ACDA EVENTS

JOIN VOICES, ! December 1, 2017 St. Xavier University, Chicago, Illinois

Join Voices, Chicago! is set to be held December 1, 2017 at St. Xavier University. As part of IL ACDA's urban initiatives, Join Voices represents a unique opportunity for city choirs to come together in a non-competitive, supportive environment. There are also opportunities for collegiate choral music education students, and for current teachers to gain professional development hours in this collaborative setting. This year's clinician is Glen Thomas Rideout, from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He will provide a clinic for each participating choir, as well as teach a mass selection at the end of the day. Last year's inaugural event was a great success with over 500 students attending. The event is partially funded by Illinois ACDA and National ACDA's Fund for Tomorrow.

Our headliners are: David Fryling is director of choral activities at Hofstra University (www.DavidFryling.org) Kathy Armstrong is a percussionist and educator who is well-known for her work in bringing Ghanaian music and dance to choirs, schools and community groups in North America and . You can expect reading sessions, the Directors’ Chorus, our composition contest winner, sessions on pedagogy, repertoire, conducting and more. And most important, a chance to enjoy the vibrant and welcoming community that is Illinois ACDA!

3 HEADLINERS/CONDUCTORS

EMILY ELLSWORTH is nationally recognized as a leader in the youth choral field, and has served as Artistic Director of ANIMA- Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus since 1996.Her work with ANIMA received the 2013 ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award from Chorus America, the 2013 Chicago a cappella Tribute Award, the 2009 Dale Warland Singers Commissioning Award given by Chorus America and the American Composers Forum, as well as Chorus America’s once-in-an-organizational - lifetime 2008 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence. In 2016, Ms. Ellsworth was honored as a “Woman of Distinction” by Suburban Life Magazine. She has prepared various ensembles for performances with Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, , Grant Park Symphony, Music of the Baroque, and others; nine CD recordings; national and regional conferences of ACDA, Kodaly educators, and Chorus America; and concert tours to six continents. Ms. Ellsworth has served on the music panel for the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C. and is the advisor of Boosey & Hawkes’ Opera Workshop series. From 2012-2015, she was a Lecturer in Choral Conducting at Northwestern University, and spent over 20 years teaching and singing as a voice faculty member in various college and university settings. In frequent demand as guest clinician/conductor throughout the U.S., she has also guest conducted in the Republic of Ireland, , Hong Kong, and .

JON HURTY is Director of Choral Activities and Henry Veld Professor in Music at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He directs the Augustana Choir, the Augustana Chamber Singers, serves as the conductor of the Handel Oratorio Society and teaches conducting. He is also Co-director of Music for Augustana Campus Ministries and is the Conductor and Artistic Director of Quad City Choral Arts. Before coming to Rock Island he was Director of Choral Activities at Concordia University in Irvine, California. Active as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and abroad, he has served in this capacity in All State, State and Regional festivals of the American Choral Directors Association, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, National Association for Music Education, and many colleges and high schools. He completed his undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, where he graduated summa cum laude, his master’s degree in Choral Conducting from California State University, Northridge, and his doctorate in Choral Conducting and Literature from the University of Illinois.

APRIL JAMES is a dynamic freelance choreographer based out of Los Angeles, California where she is highly sought after to create shows for junior high, high school and college groups across the country. In addition, her choreography can be seen on the pilot episode of the hit show GLEE. This year April spent her 18th summer as a clinician at Showchoir Camps of America and was honored to receive the Visual Vanguard Award through FAME Nationals Aspire Awards for the third time.

MARK MYERS is a choral conductor, arranger, and music educator based in Los Angeles. Mark holds degrees in music education from North Central College and Northwestern University and is currently pursuing his DMA in choral conducting with an emphasis in ethnomusicology at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. At UCLA, Mark is an assistant conductor for the University Chorale and Chamber Singers and is also a vocalist and percussionist in the Music of West Africa Ensemble. Prior to his move to Los Angeles, Mark taught vocal music for twelve years at Waubonsie Valley High School, where he helped develop an extensive curricular and extra-curricular choral program and established the nationally renowned show choir, "Sound Check." Mark is actively involved with school and community choirs across the country as an arranger, adjudicator, and guest conductor.

4 HEADLINERS/CONDUCTORS

TIM SHARP (BM, MCM, DMA) is Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the national professional association for choral conductors, educators, scholars, students, and choral music industry representatives in the United States. He represents choral activity in the United States to the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM). Sharp, himself an active choral conductor, researcher, and writer, has varied his career with executive positions in higher education, recording, and publishing. Prior to his leadership of ACDA, Sharp was Dean of Fine Arts at Rhodes College, Memphis, TN, and earlier, Director of Choral Activities at Belmont University, Nashville, TN. Tim’s research and writing focuses pedagogically in conducting and score analysis, and various published essays and books betray his eclectic interests in regional music history, acoustics, creativity, innovation, and aesthetics. He has conducted university, community, church, and children’s choirs, and continues to serve as choral conductor and clinician in the United States and internationally. He is in his tenth year as Artistic Director/ Conductor of the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus, Tulsa, OK. Innovation in the Ensemble Arts: Sustaining Creativity is Tim’s third book in the ensemble arts series published by GIA Publications, Inc. The other books in this series are Mentoring in the Ensemble Arts: Helping Others Find Their Voice and Collaboration in the Ensemble Arts: Working and Playing Well with Others. Dr. Sharp is a Life Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge University, with degrees in music and conducting from The School of Church Music of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Belmont University, and Bluefield College. He resides in Edmond, OK, with his wife, Jane, and daughter, Emma Jane.

ACCOMPANISTS

WILLIAM BUHR is equally at home on the stages of the world’s most prestigious concert halls or in the world of musical theater, as his work as a collaborative pianist has taken him to performing engagements in over forty countries on six continents. Holding degrees from the University of Illinois and DePaul University, Mr. Buhr currently serves as the Associate Director and accompanist of the New Classic Singers, the resident professional choral ensemble at the College of DuPage, and as the principal accompanist of Anima- Young Singers of Greater Chicago (formerly the Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus).

DIANE MARELLI taught choral music for 20 years at Riverside Brookfield HS in Riverside, IL. During that time, she also taught AP Music Theory, Concert Band and was instrumental in creating and developing the curriculum of Fine Arts Survey, which became a graduation requirement of all RB students. The RBHS Choirs performed at festivals and conferences under her direction, including the Illinois Music Educator Conference. Since retiring from RBHS, Diane is the Choir Director at Robert Morris University in Chicago. Beginning her musical studies at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, she later received a BA degree from Western Illinois University and Master’s Degree from St. Xavier University. She has served on the board for Illinois ACDA and has been honored to accompany for many ACDA Conferences. She is active in ILMEA and has been the accompanist for the ILMEA District 1 Choirs for many years. Diane has extensive professional experience as a soloist, accompanist and conductor for festivals, concerts and recitals in the Chicago area.

SETH DURBIN began his career at Waubonsie Valley High School in 2015. Mr. Durbin holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, IL. Among the choirs under his direction are five curricular choirs, the Mosaic unity chorus, Mosaic Ensemble, and the award winning show choir "Sound Check." Mr. Durbin is excited to also be directing the all male show choir, Guys In Ties. In addition, Mr. Durbin serves as the co-musical director for the spring musical.
