THOMAS, 56, of 10223 17th Road, Argos, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday at home. Arrangements are pending at Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos. Saturday, January 3, 2009 Dorothy C. Fern May 28, 1908-Jan. 1, 2009 Dorothy C. FERN, 100, of Peru, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home. She was born in Scottsburg on May 28, 1908, the daughter of George and Estelle Carr. Dorothy grew up on a farm near Elwood and married Russell Fern on June 1, 1929, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1995. Dorothy lived on East Hartman Road, Anderson, for 62 years, and worked at Delco Remy Division of General Motors in Anderson. She attended Shiloh Friends Church, Elwood. She and her husband, Russell, lovingly raised two sons. Dorothy was well known in her Anderson community for making wonderful pies. She always had a pie ready for guests. She enjoyed working in her garden and canning the produce she grew. Surviving are two sons, Keith Fern and his wife Barbara of Rochester and Riverview, Fla., their two sons, Brian Fern and his wife Marcella of Warner Robins, Ga., and their children Corrynn, Kyler, Christian and Brayden, and Scott Fern of Indianapolis; and Donald Fern and his wife Janice of Peru and Naples, Fla., their three children, Matthew Fern and his wife Jacqueline of Woodland Hills, Calif., and their daughter Gabriella, Mark Fern and his wife Jennifer of Reading, Pa., and their sons Kyle and Chandler, and Melissa Rohde and her husband A.J. of Chicago, Ill. She was 2 preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Glen and Jay Carr. A service celebrating the life of Dorothy Fern will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, with Pastor Steven Ailes officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Anderson Memorial Park, Anderson. Memorial contributions may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church. Shirley Jean Scott Shirley Jean SCOTT, 74, Rochester, died Dec. 16 at home. Survivors include her husband, Ronald E. Scott; daughters, Terri Sweet, Regina Lloyd, both of Rochester, and Rene' Schmeltz, New Haven; a son, Dennis Scott, Granger; sisters, Frances Joan Sauer, Nancy Ware of Mishawaka, Ellen Swihart, Margie Odione of Bremen; and a brother, James Slusser, Indianapolis. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 17 at St. John Lutheran Church, 404 Jefferson St. Monday, January 5, 2009 Flossie June Garn-Sirus April 27, 1935-Jan. 3, 2009 Flossie June GARN-SIRUS, 73, of South Bend, formerly of Culver, passed away Saturday at the Goshen General Hospital in Goshen at 4:20 a.m. June was born on April 27, 1935, in rural Marshall County, one of several children born to Charles and Cleo (McClane) Garn. She attended the Culver School system. She married Will Sirus on Oct. 1, 1989, at the Culver Eagles. June was a former employee of the Culver Military Academies, having held several positions. She enjoyed singing and once entertained the Oprah Winfrey audience before the show. She was passionate about volunteering her time, cooking meals for the homeless, and taking in stray pets. June is survived by her husband, William P. Sirus of South Bend; daughters, Susan Napier of Culver and C. Beatrice (Alan) Wentzel of Kewanna; sons, Billy Napier of Las Vegas and James (Barbara) Napier of Culver; sisters, Sarah Behnke of Culver, Mary Wolverton of Burr Oak, Wanda Miller of Plymouth and Margaret Newland of Coldwater, Mich.; 3 grandchildren, Shari, John, Shawn, Stephanie, Gene, Emily, Becky, Alison, Phillip, Todd, Paula, Neil, Amanda and Denise; and 30 great-grandchildren. Visitation with the family will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bonine-Odom Funeral Home in Culver. The Rev. Dan Huhn will officiate funeral services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Betty Geane Glentzer May 18, 1924–Jan. 3, 2009 Betty Geane GLENTZER, 84, of 3022 E. 300 South, Rochester, passed away at 5:18 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. Born in Fulton County, she was the daughter of Edward and Bessie Bybee Lowe. She lived the majority of her life in this community. On March 28, 1968, in Clearwater, Fla., she married Roy W. Glentzer, and he survives. Betty was a loyal employee of the Hart Schaffner & Marx Co. of Rochester. She also worked at Bryan's Wire-Cutting. She greatly enjoyed membership of several local service clubs including the VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 1545, the American Legion Auxiliary No. 36 and the Manitou Lodge Women of the Moose No. 866. As a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, she was awarded the designation of the "Golden Eagle." In her spare time, she also enjoyed knitting and was an avid reader. She is also survived by four daughters, Patricia Quier, Kitty Kesler and husband Jim, Tracy S. Lewis, all of Rochester, and Jackie Platz and husband Bobby, Mishawaka; a son, David Glentzer, Lacoohee, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Loraine Hunter, Rochester, and Sue Miller and husband Jeff, Hudson, Fla.; a sister, Melva Sanders, Rochester; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Edith Alber, Mildred Kramer, Iris Hattery, Minnie Neese and Maxine Sayger; and a son- in-law, Don Quier. A celebration of the life of Mrs. Betty Geane Glentzer will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., (Indiana 14 West), with the Rev. Sam Boys officiating. Friends may visit with her family from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to her service at the funeral home. Betty will be laid to rest at the Athens-Hoover Cemetery. 4 Preferred memorials may be made to Breast Cancer Research of Indianapolis, American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. Electronic expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at [email protected]. Raymond L. Smith May 2, 1938-Jan. 2, 2009 Raymond L. "Ray" SMITH, 70, passed away peacefully at 3:30 a.m. Friday in his rural Leesburg home. Born in Rochester, he was the son of Henry "Hank" Smith and Bessie (McClain) Grubbs. He lived in Kosciusko County for the past 30 years. He married Judy A. Scheffer on Oct. 15, 1983, in Pulaski, and she survives in Leesburg. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this past year. He was a machine operator for Dana Corp., where he worked for 25 years. He retired from Dana in 1994. A veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Aug. 30, 1956, in Chicago, Ill. He received the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged on Aug. 29, 1960 in California, and served in the Naval Reserve until Aug. 29, 1962. He belonged to Rochester Eagles No. 852 and North Webster American Legion Post No. 253. In addition to his wife, Judy Smith, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Brenda Smith, Goshen, and Jesse and Rhonda Bitterling, Star City; two daughters, Kendra Smith, Goshen, and Michelle Hand, Syracuse, and a daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Dan Wenzler, Star City; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and is now with his beloved dog, Chelsey. His funeral service was at 5 p.m. Sunday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with visitation prior to the service. Pastor Steve Peters of First Baptist Church of Warsaw officiated. North Webster American Legion conducted military honors. Burial will be at a later date. Ashley Nicole Swope Ashley Nicole SWOPE, 23, formerly of Rochester, died at 3:10 p.m. Sunday in Defiance, Ohio. 5 Arrangements are pending at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester. Dwight Allen Thomas Dec. 11, 1952-Dec. 31, 2008 Dwight Allen THOMAS, 56, of 10223 17th Road, Argos, passed away at 5:20 p.m. Dec. 31, at his residence following a short illness. Born in South Bend, he was the son of Kenneth Earl and Ruth Mildred (Ditmire) Thomas. He married Thresa "Terri" Baker on Aug. 7, 1982, in Niles, Mich., and she survives in Argos. He was a plant supervisor at Standard Motor, Mishawaka, since 2004, and also worked at Ziebart. Before that, he worked in Argos at Ristance/Dana Corp. He lived in the Argos community the last 21 years after moving from South Bend. He graduated from Jackson High School in South Bend with the Class of 1971. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a military policeman from Aug. 29, 1972, to March 1, 1974. He continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves and was honorably discharged on Aug. 28, 1978. He was a faithful supporter of DAV and VFW and a member of Lakeville United Methodist Church, Lakeville.
