The ACS-64, also known as the "Amtrak Cities Sprinter", is Amtrak's replacement of the aging AEM-7 and HHP-8 electric locomotives for operation in the Northeast and Keystone Corridors. Built by Siemens and based on the EuroSprinter European electric locomotive design, the Cities Sprinter is nonetheless a unique model to North America and is built entirely in the United States. The Prototype, entering service as of February 2014, is meant to pull as many as 18 Amfleet cars at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour!
This release will be of a brand new tooling electric Locomotive from Kato in N scale as well as a brand new passenger car release! The Amfleet I, similar to Kato’s previously released Amfleet II, will replicate the prototype’s distinctive inside bearing trucks and body shape, while the ACS-64 is being built from the ground up to maximize pulling power and smooth running. Featuring all new molding and detailing, designed with assistance from both Siemens and Amtrak, the ACS-64 will have drop-in DCC compatibility, directional lighting, adjustable pantographs, and a seamless, modern look!

The Kato N Scale FEF-3 follows in the footsteps of its Southern Pacific 4-8-4 GS-4 cousin, refining the basic concept of a high-power, flexible steam locomotive which is easily upgradable to DCC by coupling a special, isolated coreless motor drive system with heavy duty flywheels and a flexible cross-braced suspension system that gives the locomotive a high torque, high traction grip that ensures constant and consistent pressure spread across the primary drivers.
The Kato N scale FEF-3 will be available in Analog as well as DCC equipped variations, including ESU Loksound DCC, specially installed by Kato USA! For those modelers looking for sound but operating analog layouts, Kato is also excited to announce a new Sound Card for the Kato Sound Box (#22-101-1, MSRP $279.99), featuring heavy steam sounds with both prototypical FEF and GS-4 horns, allowing this card to do double-duty!
DCC and DCC+Sound versions of these locomotives are built-to-order as a special service from Kato USA. Modelers who wish to install their own DCC Sound decoders into their existing locomotives will be able to follow detailed pictorial instructions posted on the Kato USA website at the time of release.

The UP is the largest railroad in the United States and traces its history back to the 1860’s. Along with a long standing and rich heritage, The UP maintains a fleet of historic locomotives and rolling stock for use at public day events and special business trips; these “excursion trips” are an opportunity for the railroad to show actual operational railroad history to new generations of railroad fans both young and old, pairing majestic steam locomotives such as the FEF-3 #844 (the “living legend”) with modern diesels such as UP’s fleet of Heritage SD70ACe locomotives as the general public is invited to explore (and even ride!) UP’s preserved passenger equipment.
Many of the UP’s older heritage cars have been repurposed specially for these excursion trains, such as the 1962 vintage Baggage car “Promontory” which has been rebuilt into a traveling museum exhibit filled with interactive exhibits and memorabilia from the UP’s past. Even more drastically modified is a special ex-Baggage Dormitory car, gutted and rebuilt to house a diesel generator as a power car to provide head end electrical power to excursion trains pulled by Union Pacific’s steam locomotives. These cars and more join well-kept vintage Pullman and ACF-built luxury passenger cars to help preserve the historic golden era of US Passenger trains as the UP continues to operate and support railroad exhibitions in the modern era.

The headliner of GE’s 1993 freight locomotive line was the 6 motor, 4400hp C44-9W “Dash 9.” Slightly longer than its predecessors at 73 feet, 2 inches, the C44-9W used a new HiAd, bolsterless low-weight truck that was designed for better grip on the rails no matter the weather. A split cooling system lowered engine temperatures and fuel consumption as well, granting these locomotives a longer operation life and lower overhead costs.
