A Wrinkle in Time is the fourth play in our Field Trip Series for local schools which we began in 2014 with Battledrum and The Belle of Amherst is a gift to our poetry-loving patrons which we’ve added to the season after being approached by the very talented Ferrell Marshall whom we’ve long wanted to have work with us. These two offerings underscore what we are trying to do here at the Playhouse. They appeal to two different groups of our patrons – families will be delighted with A Wrinkle in Time, a wonderful adaptation of the beloved Newbery Award-winning book about young Meg who is negotiating the vicissitudes of early adolescence while “tessering” to Camazotz to rescue her father and The Belle of Amherst, filled with the beautiful poetry of one of America’s greatest and most original poets, Emily Dickinson, will appeal to all our patrons who delight in language. These two shows celebrate two Americans who have, through their wonderful imaginations, left profound marks on any who have read them. I sincerely hope that the adults who are drawn to The Belle of Amherst will also come back to see the inventive way the worlds of Uriel and Camazotz have been brought to our stage and that families will come back – with their children – to hear Dickinson’s masterful way with words. A Repertory is a daunting undertaking involving so many artists and so much coordination. I am always struck by how many people it takes to put on a show and how seriously everyone takes their role in the process. I remember thinking that I would love to share with our audiences how amazing it was at our production meeting for Wrinkle that there were fourteen! people discussing all the elements that would come together in this production from lighting to sound to video projections to the set to the costumes to the props all of which need to be conceived, and built, and installed, and then work in tandem – seamlessly - to support the work that the actors are doing on stage. Talk about it taking a village…. And then we did it again for the other show! My thanks to everyone who worked so tirelessly to make this Repertory a success. As always we do this for you – our SMP family – whose support and loyalty mean so much to us and for whom we hope we bring pleasure and joy and moving experiences in the theater. Kiff Scholl A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR “Believing takes practice.” Although this quote from the book A Wrinkle in Time does not get said in our production, I have used it as my inspiration for our show. I didn’t read this book as a kid - I came to it only as an adult when I was thinking of plays for the Field Trip Series - but I wish I had though. This is exactly the kind of book I would have loved: science fiction (I was a huge Robert Heinlein fan) about disconnected and disoriented kids. And Meg is just the kind of kid who should go on this journey – a true “Hero’s Journey” if there ever was one. An awkward, lonely and dispirited adolescent girl who learns two invaluable things that all of us needed to learn when we were young and impressionable: that we are loved and that we are perfect just as we are. Believing takes practice…believing in yourself and more importantly believing in others – your parents, your friends, your siblings – just at the moment when you are questioning everything. When I started the Field Trip Series in 2014 I hoped that it would grow into a yearly offering that would speak to school kids and their teachers, supporting curricula and inspiring a love for theater in our young patrons. But even more, I hoped that the stories would be ones that would inspire and challenge and enthrall – and they have! - the Civil War drummer boys of Battledrum, the young scientist on the brink of everything in Einstein is a Dummy, the sterling friends in Charlotte’s Web, and now Meg in A Wrinkle in Time. I’m so happy that this play features a girl on the brink of womanhood learning to negotiate the world and her own transformation. I cannot imagine a more fitting story to share with young people who themselves are on the brink of adulthood. I am so grateful to all the artists who helped me realize this show: the actors, who were always up for any wild suggestion, and the designers, who were as delighted to tell this story as I was and who came up with so many great ways for us to realize the vision of this show. It was truly a collaborative and incredibly fun journey. My thanks, too, to the SMP staff and Board who work so hard to bring our wonderful and award-winning productions to you. And finally, because I can’t thank them often enough, thanks to Doug and Gideon, without whose support, love, and indulgence of my crazy schedule I wouldn’t be able to do this at all. “Believing takes practice” and I’m still practicing!
