CYO of Mercer County 2014 Annual Report Catholic Youth Organization of Mercer County CYO Board of Trustees President Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) of Mercer County is an independently incorporated 501(c) (3), community Most Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M. organization, whose mission is to enhance the lives of Greater Mercer County youth and their families, by provid- ing affordable, quality educational and recreational services, which include pre-schools, before and after school Chairperson Arthur J. Rooted in Catholic Tradition, CYO provides services in an inclusive, non-discriminatory manner, respecting the culture and faith of all. Schools: Klockner, Greenwood, Wilson and Lalor Administrative The CYO has 60+ years experience in childcare and youth programs and serves over 1,200 children daily Staff during the school year and nearly 1,300 daily during the summer! The CYO also serves approximately 1,200 children (ages 8-14), from Catholic schools and parishes, in seasonal athletic leagues. Executive Director Thomas G. Mladenetz, M.Ed. The CYO is led by a dynamic volunteer Board of Trustees which includes professional and community mem- Yardville Branch Director bers with experience in diverse areas. The CYO currently has 40 full-time, 90 part-time and 100+ seasonal Patrick Hardiman Trenton Pre-School Director employees. Volunteers play vital roles at CYO, from sports coaches to students acting as aides in our child- Debora Grier care programs, to employee groups who maintain and beautify our facilities and grounds. South Broad Street Program 2014 CYO HIGHLIGHTS Director Mark Newman The grand opening of the Msgr. Toomey Annex in Yardville was held on August 1st. Rev. Dennis Apoldite, Pastor of Sacred Heart and Divine Athletic Director Mercy Parishes in Trenton ( and CYO Board member) blessed this beautiful new 4,600 square foot addition of a multi purpose room / gym. Quincy Walzer Other CYO Board members , Diocesan officials, local officials, donors and friends gathered to celebrate at a luncheon capped off by a perform- Administrative Asst./Financial ance by the CYO Camp Dance Team! Services The grand opening of the Northstar New Jersey computer lab at the CYO Broad Street Center was held on January 28th. Northstar is the Kathy Schroeder management services company that works with the NJ Lottery. They provided the funding for 14 Dell flat screen computers along with new Yardville Pre-School Supervisor printers, desks, speakers/headphones, educational software, flooring, lighting, banners, and a fresh coat of paint—totaling $30,000! Kara DeBonis The CYO received a $25,000 grant for the East State Street Center for its school—age enrichment programs, after school and summer camp Yardville Program Coordinator from Mission and Ministry Inc., a ministry of the Daughters of Charity, St. Louise Province. This request was endorsed by Daughter of Char- Dan Bossio ity, Sister Joanne Dress, Executive Director of Catholic School Services in the Diocese of Trenton and member of the CYO Board of Trustees. Administrative Coordinator The CYO reached a formal agreement with the Children’s Home Society of New Jersey to partner with them at the CYO East State Street Donna Marie Clancy Center. CHS will use several classrooms ( and a couple offices) to operate the Head Start Program there. CHS was awarded a 5 year federal Ewing Administrative Director grant to run the Head Start program in Trenton and the CYO is proud to work with them in providing this valuable service to the community. Debbie Kirschenbaum After two years of operating the former Martin House Learning Center, the enrollment in CYO Programs continues to grow at that site. There Ewing Education Director are almost 40 children in the CYO East State Street Pre School, 70 in the After School Program ( more than double from last year), over 100 in Robyn Fratticcioli the Summer Camp, and 240 in the Basketball League there! East State Street Center CYO has completed a full year of managing the Bromley Neighborhood Center—under a contract with the Township of Hamilton. Tutoring, a Program Director Teen Program, Summer Camp, Senior Citizen Programs, the food pantry, computer classes, community celebrations , field trips, a Head Start Robert Donaldson Program, hall rentals, and so much more, make this a very busy community center! Grant Writer The CYO continues to serve the Ewing community very well at the Hollowbrook Community Center. Besides the year-round Pre School, the Nancy Podeszwa Summer Camp there had a record of over 80 youngsters enrolled this past Summer! This space there is leased from Ewing Township—which continues to be a great partner and very supportive of our programs. The 6th CYO Basketball Hall of Fame Banquet was one of our best ever—filling the Nottingham Ballroom with over 300 guests. This was indeed a special night for our 19 new inductees—bringing the total Hall of Fame group up to 124 members! This event very well reflects the rich diversity of the CYO Programs. Inductees were from all walks of life, various ethnic backgrounds, and came from inner city Trenton neighborhoods to the lanes of Princeton—and everywhere in between! There are a record number of students (over 180) enrolled in the CYO’s Before & After School Programs operated in four of the Hamilton Township public schools (Wilson, Lalor, Klockner and Greenwood Schools). The CYO continues to implement high quality and creative pro- gramming at these satellite sites A fundraising campaign for the purchase of a new school bus was launched. The James Kerney Foundation provided a generous $20,000 grant to jump start this effort. CYO recently retired ( per state regulations) an old 54 passenger school bus, so we are hoping to replace it in the upcoming months. We appreciate the continued support from the community!
