Jesus’ body as microcosm of heaven and earth . 174 x PREFACE The idea to examine the space of the kingdom first entered my mind in a seminar on the kingdom of God with Mark Seifrid. As I read through the major works on the kingdom, I realized that the emphasis on the rule of God was at the expense of the spatial and person centered aspects of the kingdom. My supervisor, Jonathan Pennington, had already touched on this issue in his dissertation “Heaven and Earth in the Gospel of Matthew.” His project focused on why Matthew used the language of “heaven and earth” while I will spend more concentrated time on the implications of the spatial reality of the kingdom. In some ways this dissertation does not fit into a neat category. It is trans- disciplinary. Historical-critical exegetes may be frustrated with the number of philosophical concepts (and may detest the word “space” after it is over), while philosophers may be annoyed by the detailed exegesis. Systematic theology could not be avoided (not that I wanted to) as the implications of the incarnation and its relationship to anthropology have massive importance. Some sociological observations are interspersed through the work concerning social theories of space and exorcisms. The focus is on exegesis of Matthew, but philosophical, sociological, geographical, and systematic reflections are interspersed. The need for this type of cross-study is increasingly recognized as beneficial. The bifurcation and specialization in each field has produced numerous strengths, but a weakness is that scholars forget to reach out across the aisle. I want to thank my wife, Hannah, who patiently allowed me to work on the project. Jonathan Pennington read my chapters numerous times always providing helpful exegetical and structural suggestions. My father, Tom Schreiner, was regularly interacting with me on these ideas and helped improve the project in a variety of ways. I also need to xi thank Matthew Sleeman who pointed me to numerous works on spatial theory and noted some novice mistakes I made in spatial understanding. My committee had helpful feedback towards the end of the process. Adam Christian also read my manuscript with an editor’s eye and saved me from many errors. My prayer is that through this work one understands the Gospel of Matthew better, and thereby sees the face of God in Jesus Christ. The soundtrack for this dissertation ranges from my Spotify playlist of movie scores, to Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Daft Punk, Youth Lagoon, Over the Rhine, Roman Candle, Mozart, The Apache Relay, First Aid Kit, Phosphorescent, Lord Huron and many others. Each of these artists provided much inspiration as I perspired at the keyboard. Lord Huron’s lyrics to their song “Ends of the Earth” are appropriate to my theme.   • Genealogy of Nihilism: Philosophies of Nothing and the Difference Of
    GENEALOGY OF NIHILISM Nihilism is the logic of nothing as something, which claims that Nothing Is. Its unmaking of things, and its forming of formless things, strain the fundamental terms of existence: what it is to be, to know, to be known. But nihilism, the antithesis of God, is also like theology. Where nihilism creates nothingness, condenses it to substance, God also makes nothingness creative. Negotiating the borders of spirit and substance, theology can ask the questions of nihilism that other disciplines do not ask: Where is it? What is it made of? Why is it so destructive? How can it be made holy, or overcome? Genealogy of Nihilism rereads Western history in the light of nihilistic logic, which pervades two millennia of Western thought and is coming to fruition in our present age in a virulently dangerous manner. From Parmenides to Alain Badiou, via Plotinus, Avicenna, Duns Scotus, Ockham, Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, Sartre, Lacan, Deleuze and Derrida, a genealogy of nothingness can be witnessed in development, with devastating consequences for the way we live. As a dualistic logic, nihilism has come to ground existence not in life but in the absences beyond it. We who are, are no longer the living, but rather the living dead; in the death-wielding modern approach to knowledge, we are all reduced to cadavers. The Trinitarian theology of Genealogy of Nihilism offers a counterargument that is sustained by nihilism even as it defeats it. In Christ’s ontological synthesis of divine spirit and incarnation, and in the miraculous logic of the resurrection, theology reunites presence with absence, non-being with being.

    CHRISTOPHER EVANS Christopher Francis Evans 1909–2012 THREE YOUNG MEN—two Anglican, one Methodist—studying Theology at Cambridge at various times in the 1930s were destined, though they did not know it, to become the three most influential British New Testament scholars of their generation. All were to become Fellows of the British Academy. The first was Charles Francis Digby Moule (always known as ‘Charlie’), who read classics at Emmanuel College, but then studied Theology at Ridley Hall in preparation for ordination; he became Lady Margaret’s Professor of Divinity in 1951. Youngest of the three was Charles Kingsley Barrett (known by his friends as ‘Kingsley’), who stud- ied mathe matics at Pembroke before switching to Theology and preparing for the Methodist ministry at Wesley House; he spent almost all his teach- ing career in Durham, where he became Professor of New Testament.1 In between them, and overlapping with Charlie Moule, was Christopher Francis Evans, who was for a short time Lightfoot Professor at Durham before moving to the University of London, as Professor of New Testament at King’s College. ‘Overlapping with’, and perhaps overshadowed by, Charlie Moule, who had gone up to Cambridge a year before him.     1 Overview of Previous Scholarship 1.1. INTRODUCTION Most of our knowledge about “Jewish Christianity” in antiquity is dependent on patristic heresiological sources. But in addition to these, the Pseudo- Clementine and the (hereafter and ) occupy a Homilies Recognitions Hom. Rec. special place. For they are widely recognized as a few of the most important primary sources for gaining something of a firsthand knowledge of Jewish Christianity. The vast majority of scholarly attention given to the Pseudo- Clementines, however, has focused on its source criticism, but to date little attention has been given to pentateuchal exegesis within this literature, as the following survey will illustrate. We are very fortunate to have available a thorough history of research on the Pseudo-Clementines, provided by F. Stanley Jones.1 Here I will highlight only those works of scholarship that have immediate bearing on the present study. My overview will begin with some of the scholarship dedicated to source-critical issues. Second, I will move from there to survey scholarly work on biblical exegesis in the Pseudo-Clementines in general.
