BALKAN PARTY with DŽAMBO AGUŠEVI ORCHESTRA live & DJ Tagada Friday 5 October from 7.30 pm Melusina

Fresh trumpet-led brass avalanche from Macedonia topped up by a fiery Balkan DJ set

Džambo Aguševi Orchestra is a thrilling brass band from Macedonia expertly performing a fusion of traditional Balkan, Gypsy and Turkish music, influenced by swing, jazz, pop and film music. Performing with his trumpet since the age of 11, Džambo Agušev has won numerous trumpeters’ competitions, dominating the Kumanovo Trumpet Festival continuously from 2006 to 2011 when he was kindly asked not to compete anymore to give his peers a chance. In 2011, Džambo fulfilled his dream to win the most highly respected festival, ’s Guča Trumpet Festival (known as “Woodstock for trumpets”) and thanks to his virtuoso playing and innovative arrangements, he has earned himself the title of the new Balkan king of the trumpet. After touring the world (with notable performances at WOMEX 2014 and Mexico City Festival Historico) and releasing “Brass Like It Hot” – their first international album – the Džambo Aguševi Orchestra is now coming to for the very first time to drop on you an unprecedented bomb of high-energy Balkan groove.

Right after the concert, the fire on Melusina’s dance-floor will be further stoked up by the essentially Balkan- flavoured selection of DJ Tagada. Behind mixing desks for 10 years now, this French DJ mesmerises audiences worldwide with his energising fusion of brass fanfares, gypsy punk, electro, klezmer and modern beats. He is the other face of the notorious Balkan Beats label – together with our star of last year, DJ Robert Soko, who describes him as “A bastardo DJ of an almost extinct species, unpredictable, unbending, and sometimes simply shameless - but one of the few DJs who can bring the dance-floor to a dance-orgasm.” Are you ready to experience that?

Throughout the evening you can enjoy hearty Eastern European warm dishes and cold snacks on the upper floor of the venue.

BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN by Sergei Eisenstein with live soundtrack by the Polish ensemble PASIMITO Thursday 11 October at 8.30 pm Cinémathèque

An atmospheric live soundtrack blending various musical genres to accompany the classic silent film Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein.

The ground-breaking Battleship Potemkin is counted amongst the most influential cinematographic works in film history and is generally viewed as one of the greatest films of all time. Its story depicts a mutiny that occurred in 1905 when the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin rebelled against their officers. Sergei Eisenstein, born 120 years ago (1898) in Riga (), was a Soviet film director and a pioneer of the developing film art, known also for October (1928) and the later historical epics Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible.

The music soundtrack, which reveals a variety of musical inspirations, will be played live by Pasimito, a group of rebellious musicians whose eclectic approach brims over with creative energy and strong emotions. Using the typical rock set-up of drums, bass and guitar, enhanced with saxophones, vocals and electronics, the 6-member band will accentuate the film’s story with intricately crafted sounds referencing alternative jazz, rock, ambient and even ethno, while also keeping some room for improvisation. Since 2005, the band has performed at many venues and festivals all around and beyond, not only playing soundtracks to films (e.g. Nanook of the North, The Kid, The General, Phantom of the Opera) but also at regular gigs showcasing their albums Rumi and Naked Carrot. So give yourself up to the unbridled saxophone, romantic soundscapes, free jazz rhythm section and electrifying guitar of Pasimito and enjoy a masterpiece of film history with this unique musical accompaniment.

APERO JAZZ With LACO DÉCZI & CELULA NEW YORK Sunday 14 October at 11.00 am Neimënster (Salle Krieps)

The legendary untamable trumpeter brings his jazz gang to Luxembourg for the very first time.

Slovakia-born trumpeter, composer and band leader Laco Déczi has dedicated his whole life to music and his beloved instrument. After moving to Prague in the early 60s he soon became a major figure on the city’s vibrant jazz scene, a tireless and entertaining performer, keen collaborator and member of dozens of jazz ensembles. He founded his own band, Jazz Celula, in 1967 and he has always been busy recording and composing too, including music for films (e.g. Věra Chytilová’s Calamity). In 1986 Laco emigrated to the US where he’s shared the stage with such jazz heavyweights as Elvin Jones, Bill Watrous, Junior Cook and Sonny Costanzo. Since 1990 the unstoppable Laco Déczi has performed all around the States with his group Celula New York. However, he also returns to Europe each year to amaze audiences with his unmistakable style and cheeky sense of humour. Having celebrated his 80th birthday this year, Laco Déczi is still a wild and energetic performer. Together with Vaico Déczi on drums, Jan Aleš on keys and Michael Krásný on bass, Laco Déczi will undoubtedly make an unforgettable show, his first in Luxembourg.

Throughout his career Laco has won many awards and is widely recognised as one of the true masters of jazz trumpet. Several books have been written about him and his interesting personality is also the topic of the documentary film Steam On The River, which will be screened in the presence of Mr. Déczi on Saturday 13 October, to give you the opportunity to get to know this unique musician even before his show the next day.

After the musical aperitif, we invite you to the standard brunch at the Brasserie Wenzel, featuring typical Central and Eastern European bites.
