Fiction about rock and roll is almost always ridiculous. Non-fiction about rock and roll is almost always also ridiculous, particularly in the form of the memoir. However, Julian Cope is slightly different, perhaps because his life story is so ridiculous that it's kind of hard to believe, whether in the fictional or non-fictional format, and yet it turns out that he speaks the truth, in a very strange and compelling way. These two books, bundled together comprise the two-volumes of his rock and r Fiction about rock and roll is almost always ridiculous. These two books, bundled together comprise the two-volumes of his rock and roll autobiography to date, and they're just about one of the most remarkable documents of rock and roll insanity and that's not a word to be used lightly in this case you'll ever read. If he was on the way to being barking mad before he started taking copious amounts of acid, can you imagine what happened once he got down off his anti-drugs high horse and started crawling around in the mud dressed only in a turtle shell? And yet, he also seems really quite sweet and normal. Just like everyone else, he gets up, makes tea, sits around the house. Perhaps not like everyone else, he also takes handfuls of hallucinogens, carves himself up onstage like a pumpkin with a jagged microphone stand, and has feuds with numerous 80s indie rock icons like Ian McCullough and Bill Drummond. Some rock people make you wish you could Head On/Repossessed them. Julian Cope is not one of those people. Julian Cope is Saint Julian, living all the way out there on our behalf, frying himself into oblivion so that we might Head On/Repossessed and learn from his experience vicariously. Best rock and roll read in forever. Apr 19, Susannah Marriott rated it it was amazing. Possibly the best music memoir ever? In order of reading, I loved him, got bored by him, laughed at him, threw him against the wall, detested him, felt sorry for him, grew to love him again, became completely infatuated, and finally adored him so much that I had to read Head On/Repossessed else he'd written. Head On is not your average rock star autobiography. But it contains plenty excess, with the band and their entourage spiralling out of control on tour and Cope following Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz onto the Top of the Pops stage to perform Passionate Friend, while on acid. Yet, this memoir is really entertaining Head On/Repossessed largely well Head On/Repossessed with short chapters that make Head On/Repossessed want Head On/Repossessed have just one more. Cope seems frustrated by his portrayal in the music press as an acid casualty, Head On/Repossessed did he not play up to this reputation? On the whole, I prefer this second volume. Cope is able to gradually get back on track and keep making music, regardless of whether Head On/Repossessed sells on a grand Head On/Repossessed or not. In fact, his artistic integrity and uncompromising attitude were often a bone of contention with record companies. As ever, these sorts Head On/Repossessed books give the author the chance to slag off those they have fallen out with Mac from Head On/Repossessed Bunnymen or ex-Teardrop band members in this casebut Cope comes across Head On/Repossessed one of the more intriguing and amusing personalities of the era. In Head On/Repossessed personal memoirs, he is always willing to share his knowledge and passion for leftfield music and other dimensions with those who want to go along on the trip. Dec 12, Alex rated it really liked it. The Teardrop Explodes are one of my favourite ever groups, and "Head-On" is a perfect evocation of the band and the time. Julian writes in a friendly and hilarious manner, making this easy to read. He's a natural communicator. Apr 07, Dario rated it it was amazing Shelves: non-fictionmusicfive-stars. Memoir collection? While both tomes are obviously in chronological order, Head On is more linear, more structurally Head On/Repossessed than Repossessed. Using my Head On/Repossessed, I reckon he would have used the Internet to his own advantage, something which would have spared him having to argue endlessly with record labels. Head On/Repossessed at the same time, this book also teaches us how difficult becoming a music obsessive was at the time. Finding the latest worthwhile releases, acquiring them, the trial-and-error factor of whether you bought a good album or not, what gigs are on, what bands are the next big thing… It must have been manic. Whereas now finding a band or an Head On/Repossessed is so easy, it's almost overwhelming.

It is hard to tell whether the ramshackle stage is inside or outside but it appears to be set up against a wall made of corrugated metal. All else is black. The camera cuts to a close-up of the curtains, which are parted to reveal a pale young man with crow’s nest hair wearing a sequined tuxedo and a skewed bow tie. The man holds a lit cigarette and behind him, overseeing proceedings, is a large statue of the Virgin Mary. As the man with the crow’s nest hair walks fully through the arch he opens his mouth and sings the words ‘As the snow flies, on a cold and grey Chicago morn another little baby child is born…’. The song continues with the singer alternately shuffling as if embarrassed by the attention of the camera and then holding his arms aloft in declamation or fixing the viewer with a steely gaze.

  • 2 to Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different
2 To Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different The context for difference This chapter aims to identify some of the bands that enjoyed chart success during the late 1970s and ’80s and identify their artistic traits by means of conversations with band members and those close to the bands. This chapter does not claim to be a definitive account or an inclusive list of innovative bands but merely a viewpoint from some of the individuals who were present at the time and involved in music, creativity and youth culture. Some of these individuals were in the eye of the storm while others were more on the periphery. However, common themes emerge and testify to the Scouse resilience identified in the previous chapter. Also, identifying objective truth is a difficult task, as one band member will often have a view of his band’s history that conflicts with that of other members of the same band. As such, it is acknowledged that this chapter presents only selective viewpoints. Trying something new: In what ways were the Liverpool bands creative and different? ‘Liverpool has always made me brave, choice-wise. It was never a city that criticized anyone for taking a chance.’ David Morrissey1 In terms of creativity, the theory underpinning this book which was stated in Chapter 1 is that successful Liverpool bands in the 1980s were different from each other and did not attempt to follow the latest local or national pop music trends. None of the bands interviewed falls into the categories of punk, disco or New Romantic, which were popular trends at the time.
