We have a long travel day today, that will see us arrive in Adelaide late afternoon/early evening. But once we have checked in and unpacked our bags, we will be here for four nights. We can relax over dinner and get to know our fellow travellers. ACCOMMODATION Adelaide Meridien MEALS Lunch at own expense, dinner at Hotel New Year’s Eve in Adelaide 6 Day Tour DAY 2: Friday 31 December Adelaide New Year’s Eve We have planned a leisurely day today so we can recover from our long travel day. Mid-morning, we will be introduced to the city and its famous gardens. The Parklands – surround the entire city and for an excellent overview of the city and its Parklands we make a stop at Montefiore Hill. It was from this spot that Colonel Light planned a great city of the future in the sweeping valley below. Easily seen from the Hill is Adelaide Oval, one of the most beautiful Cricket Ovals in the world. Another landmark close by is St Peters Cathedral, which overlooks the city from North Adelaide. Late morning, we arrive at The Adelaide Central Market which has over 80 stalls and is South Australia’s most visited tourist attraction. It trades largely in fruit, vegetables, small goods, and café food and is divided into a colourful array of lanes and broadways. We can take some time looking through the stalls and purchase some lunch before heading to Carrick Hill. Carrick Hill was a creation from the imagination of a man and his wife who decided to bring to their home city some of the magic that they had been so captivated by when honeymooning in England. Sir Edward Hayward created a tudor manor house set in almost 100 acres of scenic bushland. We will explore the vast grounds and the extraordinary house with its Australian, English and French paintings and collection of silver and porcelain. We return to our hotel and have some time to freshen up before we head out for our special New Years Eve dinner overlooking the Torrens River. At 9pm there will be some early New Years Eve fireworks and from our restaurant we will have prime viewing position. ACCOMMODATION Adelaide Meridien MEALS Breakfast at Hotel, lunch and dinner provided DAY 3: Saturday 1 January Exploring Adelaide Happy New Year! Today we can enjoy a relaxed breakfast and enjoy a slightly later start to the day. From the city we travel along Anzac Highway to Glenelg where we commence a brief sightseeing tour along the suburban Adelaide coastline. Late morning, we arrive in Port Adelaide and join the Port River Dolphin Explorer for a lunch cruise along the Port River. See many of the original wharves and the new defence ships being built, as well as several Port River Dolphins along the way. Following our cruise we can have some free time in Port Adelaide, before heading back to the hotel. ACCOMMODATION Adelaide Meridien MEALS Breakfast and dinner at Hotel, lunch on river cruise New Year’s Eve in Adelaide 6 Day Tour DAY 4: Sunday 2 January The Barossa Valley The Barossa Valley Vineyards, just an hour north of Adelaide, were established within a few years of modern South Australia’s founding in 1836. German and English settlers began planting grapes and now, more than 150 vintage years later, the wines are world famous. This morning, we begin our touring before the wineries open, starting with a drive out to the Whispering Wall which is locally known as the “acoustic miracle”. It is the huge curved retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir and is about 140 metres long. The acoustics are such that you can speak in a normal voice and people at the other end of the wall can hear you clearly. The trick with this is that there has to be people at either end of the wall so the idea is that one person stands on one side of the wall and the other person walks across the dam to the other side. The effect is remarkable. It is one of those strange effects which have been produced by a delightful accident! We now drive to the village of Tanunda – take a stroll and buy some lunch, Tanunda is full of interesting shops. Our next stop is Seppeltsfield Wines where we meet our guide who will tell of the fascinating history of the (now privately owned) early pioneering spirit of the Seppelt family and their profound influence on the Australian wine industry. This visit is topped off with a tasting, then we return to Adelaide. ACCOMMODATION Adelaide Meridien MEALS Breakfast and dinner at Hotel, lunch provided DAY 5: Monday 3 January Adelaide to Mt Gambier Leaving Adelaide, we make our way through the Adelaide hills and cross the Murray River just outside Murray Bridge. Stopping in Meningie, for our morning break we follow the Younghusband Peninsula and the unique Coroong National Park, to our lunch stop at Kingston SE. After lunch we head into the historic port of Robe. It is an old town, with streets of heritage cottages and public buildings with loads of character. Today Robe is a holiday maker’s mecca and we welcome a local tour guide onboard the coach for a tour of the local area, then have some free time to look through the local shops before heading to Mount Gambier.
