Once Eastcote got the taste of Continental Hockey festivals, a hockey tour abroad at Season’s end became standard practice. It was the youngish veterans of the day that led the way. Mel Carter was the driving force behind these ventures. Working at British Airways he made full use of the many contacts he made there. One of our first ports of call was a town which was quite close to Antwerp in Belgium called MECHELEN! Among the many “Great and Good” residents of Mechelen over the centuries were John Heywood an English poet, Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor, the grandfather of Ludwig Van Beethoven, and Anne Boleyn who was beheaded by Henry V111.

At first Eastcote only entered a Veterans team. But when the youngsters discovered what great fun the Old Boys were having in Mechelen they demanded to be included and eventually we entered a Ladies, Mens and Veterans teams. We drove to Dover in small groups of 4 or 5, took the Ferry to any one of the continental ports where we stocked up on mainly liquid refreshments before driving to Mechelen. In Mechelen the entertainment never stopped throughout our stay there for 3/4 days from morning to morning. The hockey was played in a beautiful park that featured picturesque scenes surrounding two to three grass hockey pitches. There was a shallow river running through the park in which many an Eastcote player took a dip either voluntarily or involuntarily – mostly involuntarily.

There are many stories to tell of the many trips we made to Mechelen in the late Sixties, the Seventies and early Eighties. There are just a few of us left now who actually remember some of them. I will try to get some of these stories together for a later production of the Newsletter. And if there are any of you who have a story to tell or some interesting pictures in your possession then please let me have them. We would all like to hear your stories and have a look at your pictures! Des

The Eastcote defence offered only silence after Henley's first goal. A looping, missing miss-hit from the edge of the circle was swatted at by Z, inadvertently into the goal. Otherwise it must be noted Z's subsequent goalkeeping included a number of crucial blocks and saves.

Roaring Success at Rover Oxford

Rover Oxford is a huge tournament held in Witney, Oxfordshire and attracts the big Oxford clubs, Cheltenham and a touring team from Ireland. The event is held over two days with different age groups competing on specific days. Eastcote Juniors took 11 teams to the competition from our U8s to U14s.

In some of our teams, our performances excelled, in all of our teams, the children were great ambassadors for the club and hockey. We had at least two young people who put on Goal Keeping kit for the first time and battled against teams and learnt what a penalty shuffle is all about– thank you!

To all the parents, brothers and sisters who made the drive and cheered on in the rain (the continual rain) – thanks to you all.

Big cheer to the great coaches who managed, coached and led out their teams all day.

We couldn’t do it without you all.

Jo New Kit

Please hold fire on buying any new Eastcote playing kit for a few weeks. The adult section is currently looking at making changes to their kit and this will then be adopted by the whole club.

The changes will be confirmed after the EGM on 29th April and will be announced in the newsletter.

Rover Oxford Reports

Under 10's On Saturday, the U10s entered three teams for the annual Rover Oxford tournament set in the palatial grounds of Cokethorpe School in Witney. We got the best of the weather as the Saturday afternoon was the only spell of the weekend when it didn't rain. Having participated in separate boys and girls tournaments through the season, this was the first time the players were brought together to play "mixed" hockey and the coaches were pleased to not have to endure references to "yukky girls" or "annoying boys"!

The B and C teams did themselves very proud in the B league. Both our teams made it to the quarter finals but sadly both lost out to a one goal margin, the B team losing to Wallingford and the C team losing to Oxford B.

The EastcoNet 15 14th April 2018 The A team went one better and did brilliantly in a very strong A league. Having navigated the group stage, they came up against a strong Marlow team. Nothing could separate the teams after normal time and so the players experienced at a young age the pain of elimination by penalty shuffles.

This coach usually avoids singling any one individual for special mention but on this occasion an exception has to made. Freya played her first proper tournament in goal. In five 10 minute matches, not one goal was conceded in normal time. Much of the credit can go to the outfield players but when the need arose, Freya did brilliantly between the sticks.

Well done to all the players involved on the day and you can see their smiling faces in the team photos: A Team: Freya, Minnie, Vishnu, Willow, Lily W, Max, Pritam, Kush

B Team: Will, Arian, Millie, Lily-Grace, Paige, Ella, Sufyan, Annisa

C Team: Sienna, Kaya, Ela, Nikhil, Zayaan, Alice, Lilia, Sai

Under 12 Girls On a rather wet and unpleasant day, the Eastcote under 12 girls competed in the Oxford Rover tournament, drawing 4 games and losing 2. Drawn into a challenging pool and with a reduced squad going into the tournament, the girls did well to focus themselves for the first couple of games against Cheltenham B, Oxford B and Wallingford B. A very solid defensive line consisting of Phoebe and Mia, as well as Kaya in goal secured a clean sheet throughout these first 3 games. Attacking opportunities were well set up by Lilia, Anna and Isha in the midfield, showing impressive skill and teamwork in getting the ball into attacking positions. The opposition’s defence were put under significant pressure by strikers Sophie, Khushi and Rhea who worked tirelessly but, despite some very close opportunities, were unable to score, leaving the result in these first 3 games at 0-0, still good outcomes considering the strength of the opposition.

The next matches were against Hawks A and Cirencester A. Very well drilled and physical teams, the hockey was played against strong opposition. A big thanks girls did well to defend against them and even set up goes to Mark for running the team alongside coach Cerys and some impressive counter attacks. However, they were to the supportive parents who put up with the rain! Well done unfortunately defeated 2-0 and 8-0 in the respective to all! matches.

The squad consisted of: The last match against Bicester allowed the girls a final Anna, Isha, Kaya, Khushi, Lilia, Mia, Phoebe, Rhea and opportunity to showcase their skills. Ending again in 0- Sophie 0 despite close chances, Eastcote was unable to

progress to the next round of the tournament; Cerys Nevertheless, great fun was had by all and some great

The EastcoNet 16 14th April 2018 Under 8's C team 9am pushback in Oxford on a beautiful sunny day....(maybe next year)....It was actually a grim grey day with rain forecast.

Coaches arrived nice and early bar Keith who had stopped off at the famous Maccy D's on the roundabout as you approach Oxford. The Under 8's were excited, arriving there nice and early warming up, getting accustomed to the pitch and conditions for the day ahead. Parents were wondering as to why can't the kids get up early and ready on a school day with the same enthusiasm.

Anyway back to the hockey it was an action packed schedule for our under 8's. 7, 8 minute games were scheduled across 2 half pitches...(this was going to be interesting, as we barely cover a tenth of the pitch on

Sunday morning training) This was going to be a test of fitness and stamina. A rotation of roles, so all players got to play in different positions Coach Ninja re-inforced the fact go out have fun and and well organised from back to front -the team consisting of enjoy yourselves and not to worry about the result, as Anassa, Jyena, Millie, Partap, Rahul, Reehan, Thomas & Zaina - he has shown over the years himself!! all played really well and with the combination of some great tackling and stopping, a lot running, some passing, a little We get off to a great start winning out 1st game 3-0, footwork, a lot of smiling faces, some very good goals the kids 2nd game - 1 down but the team showed great finished tired and eager to find out where they finished. They character to come back and win 3-1, game 3 and 4 received their medals, but the organisers only gave a winner to were back to back, so no rest for these kids... the 3rd Group A and as we were group B we will never know if we match was a close affair but a late goal gave a qualified for next year's European Under 8's League..... deserved 1-0 victory, game 4 the tiredness showed and the little legs began to tire and on this occasion we Anyway the weather held out bar 10 mins of rain, we even saw were defeated by a single goal. Under 8’s B team. Eastcote U8’s B team played 7 matches in the Rover Oxford Tournament.

Despite playing the first game in the rain and they performed amazingly well and won 2-0. They continued to play some lovely hockey in the next 6 games.

In total they won 2 games, drew 2 and lost 3.

The colts displayed some excellent hockey with accurate passing, strong tackling and hunger for goals. I was very proud of all of them and the way they represented Eastcote.

We have some future first teams stars in the making for sure! Claire

The EastcoNet 17 14th April 2018 Under 8's A team The U8 ‘A’ team displayed a great range of skills and teamwork at the Oxford tournament last Saturday. Despite the (very!) early start the team burst out of the blocks and put together an impressive set of results. They did eventually run out of puff by the last game and it was shame they met the best opposition in that final fixture.

Their results were DWDWDL and they finished fourth (and made their coach very proud). Well done to George, Chloe, Oscar, Zach, Monty, Laila, Katie and Amy; you’re all a credit to Eastcote! Keith

U 14 Girls

Although initially hopeful that we could get two teams out, due to the Easter holidays we were only able to put out one team, meaning that unfortunately we couldn’t take all the girls with us. One of our unavailable players was Shauna our Goalkeeper which meant that all bar one of our games our fantastic forward Annabel stepped in as GK and only let in one goal the entire tournament.

Our pool games went well and we won 3 out of the 4 with solid team performances, building play from the back and winning numerous short corners. With goals coming from Sam, Tash, Catriona, Eshana, Hannah, and Alex. It was then a battle for the top of the table finish, which was very evenly matched but we came away with a 1-0 loss and coming second in our group. On to the quarter finals and although we remained solid as a team in our defence, always working back from the front, we sadly couldn’t find our normal goal scoring ways and it ended 0-0..... time for shuffles and heart palpitations from all, players, coaches and parents.

Huge congratulations to the girls who were willing and less willing to take them, Tash stepped up first and moved the keeper beautifully to slot the first one away. Then my moment of the tournament as the shortest player on the pitch, and one of our star forwards Annabelle did a sterling job in goal and thwarted the oppositions first attack, then while we all celebrated just shrugged at us. Catriona up next who again moved the goalie well and put us 2-0 up, the oppo then put in goal to keep us on our toes. Alex made a superb run and great shot at goal, but their keeper made a fantastic save to keep it 2-1..... potentially last one and Annabelle once again kept them at bay. Through to the semi - finals.

This was the toughest game yet, and Balerki, Tess and Alex had a lot to do in defence, but kept calm and made solid tackles and distributed well. Tash was working her socks off in midfield, while Catriona was keeping their right mid in her pocket and providing good through balls up front. Hannah and Sam did a great job injecting pace up the right hand side and supported Eshana up front who made great leads and made their keeper work harder. Again 0-0, to shuffles .... sadly this one didn’t quite go our way although Catriona did score a brilliant flick.

The battle for 3rd place.... once again the team worked hard and Alex, Balerki, Tess, Catriona and Annabell managed to keep out 3 short corners after to final whistle .... 0-0. MY HEART CANNOT COPE WITH MORE SHUFFLES! This one went down the wire but we won 2-1.

Huge congratulations to the girls on their 3rd place, they all played extremely well and deserved a medal! Although we didn’t officially vote, many of the girls mentioned one player at the end and that was Annabell, who was our player of the tournament, she stepped up and played in goal even though she wasn’t expecting it, and did a superb job, she then even nearly scored with her first touch of her only game on pitch. It has been a wonderful season with all the girls , only losing one league game and thoroughly smashing most of the others. At the very least we should end the season second in the league. We are proud of all of the girls and their improvements in not only their hockey ability but their confidence. It has been wonderful to also watch some of them playing ladies hockey. Well done girls we’ve had a fabulous season with you, thank you. Josie and Luke

th The EastcoNet 18 14 April 2018 Under 12 Boys win Silver A cloudy dry day at the Rover Oxford tournament and it was a successful day for all the boys, who played extremely well

We took two teams from the under12 group, the scorpions and the jaguars. The jaguars were very determined to do well after their win over the scorpions in our own tournament before Easter. They started well with a win from an Aaron goal but unfortunately the team was missing a few players and had a rough decision go against them which saw Marlow win by 1-0. This meant we tied with three teams and their progress went down to goal difference and we didn't progress. Great play all round though and improvement throughout the day. A special mention to Slava our This time the boys were a bit more confident as they had goalkeeper whose determination enabled many great practiced the game before. Alex, Krish and Max took position saves. Well done also to Rohan, Sid, Theo, Lucas, for their second shoot out of the day and Adrian prepared Aaron, Thomas ("no one gets past Thomas") and our himself to make some more incredible saves. They all did new guy Dhilon. extremely well and won the shuffles 3-2.

The scorpions had a much more successful day placing This put us in the final against our old friends from Ireland; first in their pool which took them to the quarter finals Bambridge. Now we're not sure what they feed them over against Oxford Hawks. It was a hard fought game going there but they certainly grow up big and strong. It was a hard to penalty shuffles after a nil nil game. The boys were fought game but their strength got the better of us at the end evenly matched and struggled a bit as they had never of a long day and we succumbed 0-3. Silver it was though done it before but, with the help of our new keeping hero and the honour of being the highest placed Eastcote team of Adrian, it went to sudden death where Max scored the the weekend. Well done to Adrian, Josh, John, Max, Ashok, winning penalty shuffle. We came up against Wallingford Tuyi, Alex and Krish. in the semi finals where again the game was 0-0 and Colin again went to penalty shuffles.

U14 Boys Eastcote U14’s Boys entered two teams at the Oxford Festival last Sunday and both teams faced Cirencester, Bicester, Banbridge and Cheltenham. The format of the tournament meant that the boys needed to go back to the seven a side game and adjust their play to meet our key principals.

The Oxford Tournament is always enjoyable as it pulls our season to a close with the opportunity to play some very strong sides, this year was no different. The B Team improved through the the day with a stand out performance against Banbridge. Once again the Irish touring team were a determined win over eventual festival winner. As a coach I was proud of how force to be reckoned with. our boys played and to finish third overall was respectable. I would like to thank all of the boys and parents for their support. A special thank you must be The A Team changed their made to Joe Godfrey who kindly travelled up to be our umpiring representative. formation and players positions a number of times, trying to find Eastcote A - Riyan, Leo, Raihan, Daniel, Alex J, Alex B, Ben, Vivek and Giles. the right balance. Jaguars beat Scorpions in famous tournament win! It was Eastcote’s own mini-tournament at Brunel where we welcomed teams from Hampstead & Westminster and Sunbury. The day was a very successful one for us.... both our teams won every game and we notched up a total of 23 goal to nil.

This left the final playoff between the two Eastcote teams the Scorpions and the Jaguars. What a match! The crowd were completely enthralled in this end to end competition. Both keepers, Slava and Adrian who had both kept all opposition attempts at bay continued in fine form foiling efforts from both sides. The intent from both sides was clear to see. It wasn’t unt il the final minute that a turnover led to a breakaway from the Jaguars and the goal to settle the encounter.

Well done Jaguars ...and well done Eastcote 24-0
