Acacia Cochlearis RIGID WATTLE (Labill.) H.L.Wendl
Plants of the West Coast family: fabaCeae Acacia cochlearis RIGID WATTLE (Labill.) H.L.Wendl Flowering period: July–October. Description: Bushy, erect to sprawling shrub, 0.5–3 m high and found as solitary plants or in thickets. Leaves to 45 mm long with a sharp point, rigid, with prominent parallel veins. Flower heads globular with up to three produced in each leaf axil. The green-brown pod is flat, to 50 mm long, and produces 10–15 black and usually highly viable seeds. Pollination: Open pollinated by a wide variety of non-specific insects. Sets a moderate amount of seed in good seasons. Distribution: From Lancelin to Israelite Bay where the species grows as solitary plants or in thickets in coastal to near-coastal habitats. Along the coast the species favours stable secondary dunes. Often an indicator of good quality dunes as the species is vulnerable to disturbance. Propagation: Grow from seed collected in December when pods mature. Seed should be hot water treated or lightly abraded with fine sandpaper. Sow in a free-draining soil mix and keep moist. Seedling growth may benefit from incorporation of a little soil taken from the weed- and disease-free soil surface around a parent plant to ensure transfer of the Rhizobium bacteria that are important in nitrogen nutrition of the plant. R. Barrett Habit Uses in restoration: A useful species that reliably establishes in stabilised soil. Must be protected from direct exposure to high winds and is best incorporated into mixed plantings with other shrubs including Acacia rostellifera and Scaevola crassifolia. -

Management options were identified to address safety and recreational amenity issues, whilst also considering ecological values and the role of dunes in protection against coastal hazards. Options relating to vegetation management are management of noxious and invasive weed species and management of subspecies of Acacia longifolia (Coastal Wattle). This site plan will guide vegetation management works which will be undertaken by a number of parties including Council’s dune crew and contractors, and Dunecare volunteers. Vegetation Maps Vegetation mapping was initially undertaken at Towradgi Beach on 24 July, 4 and 11 August 2014 to inform works and provide a baseline to monitor progress. The site was divided into Bays as delineated by access paths. Each Bay was divided into patches to indicate the location and abundance of weeds and native plants. Vegetation mapping was re-done in August 2016 to update the maps to inform works given the large amount of work that has already been conducted. Management Actions and Priorities Actions have been prioritised taking into consideration the following factors: 1. The overall aim to improve sight lines for lifeguards and lifesavers, recreational amenity and site access. -

Chaetospora is lectotypified on C. curvifolia R.Br. A new combination, Chaetospora subbulbosa (Benth.) K.L.Wilson & R.L.Barrett, is made for Schoenus subbulbosus Benth. Lectotypes are selected for Chaetospora aurata Nees, Chaetospora curvifolia R.Br., Chaetospora turbinata R.Br., Elynanthus capitatus Nees, Schoenus subbulbosus Benth., Schoenus subg. Pseudomesomelaena Kük. and Schoenus sect. Sphaerocephali Benth. Two species are endemic to south-western Australia, while the third is endemic to south-eastern Australia. Full descriptions, illustrations and a key to species are provided. All species have anatomy indicative of C3 photosynthesis. Introduction Chaetospora R.Br. is here reinstated as a segregate from Schoenus L., with a novel circumscription. Common Name Rigid Wattle Family Fabaceae Distribution Scattered along the coast of W.A. from Lancelin to Israelite Bay and from Eyre to SE of Madura; variants with significantly narrower than normal phyllodes extend inland from Katanning to near Clyde Hill, NE of Esperance. Description Erect to sprawling shrub 0.5–3 m high. Branchlets ribbed, glabrous or sparsely appressed-puberulous with straight hairs. Stipules present only on young new shoots. Phyllodes sessile, patent to ascending, inequilateral basally, subulate-linear, narrowly elliptic or oblong-elliptic, straight to recurved, (1.5–) 2–5 (–6) cm long, (1.5–) 2–10 (15) mm wide, pungent, thinly coriaceous to subrigid, glabrous or subglabrous, with 3 or 4 distant plane to slightly raised main nerves; glands 1–3, the lowermost 5– 20 mm above pulvinus. Inflorescences simple, 1–3 per axil; peduncles 3.5–8 (–12) mm long, rather stout, glabrous; heads globular, 4–5 mm diam., 30-50-flowered, deep golden. -
