G A G O S I A N G A L L E R Y July 24, 2014 EXTENDED! UPDATED PRESS RELEASE GAGOSIAN GALLERY 821 PARK AVENUE T. 212.796.1228 NEW YORK NY 10021 E. [email protected] HOURS: Tue–Sat 10:00am–6:00pm SUMMER HOURS (Through August 29): Mon–Fri 10:00am–6:00pm HARMONY KORINE: Shooters Through Tuesday, July 29, 2014 Gagosian New York is pleased to present “Shooters,” an exhibition of recent paintings by Harmony Korine. From Kids (1995), a meditation on New York City youth, to Spring Breakers (2012), a contemporary film noir in which four college freshwomen are drawn into a murderous labyrinth of events, Korine’s films of the past twenty years merge reality with fiction and shaky “footage” with precise editing, holding viewers’ attention to the split second and thereby suspending disbelief. His heady mix of the unplanned, the seductive, and the outlandish crystallizes in his lesser-known paintings. Bypassing brush and art paint in favor of squeegees, leftover household paint, and masking tape, he creates loosely sequential images that echo the sonic and visual leitmotifs of his films. In Starburst paintings, he sticks overlapping segments of masking tape to the center of an unprimed canvas, then uses a broom to spread primary red, yellow, and blue dyes over the surface. The tape is removed to reveal bright, irregular stars shining through colorful mists; the final compositions are characterized by a spontaneous, explosive radiance. Loop Paintings are the result of a process somewhat related to filmmaking: Korine cast young men and women, made them up as elderly people, and photographed them in alleyways.

  • Ben Keith, Neil Young's Ste
Ben Keith, Neil Young's steel guitarist: 1937-2010 | Pop & Hiss | Los Angeles Times July 27, 2010 | 1:25 pm Ben Keith, the veteran steel guitarist who played on Patsy Cline’s 1961 hit “I Fall to Pieces” before befriending Neil Young and going on to play on more than a dozen of the Canadian rocker's albums, has died. He was 73. He died of a heart attack, director Jonathan Demme said Tuesday. Demme, who directed Young’s concert films “Neil Young Trunk Show” from earlier this year and 2006’s “Heart of Gold,” said Keith had been staying at Young’s ranch in Northern California, working on new projects with his longtime collaborator. Keith was featured prominently in both. In “Neil Young Trunk Show,” shot in Pennsylvania at a stop on Young’s 2007-2008 concert tour, Young said a key reason he chose to tour with Keith, bassist Rick Rosas and Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, rather than convening the full, hard-rocking Crazy Horse trio, was that “I can do more variety this way, because Ben plays so many instruments.” Demme called Keith “an elegant, beautiful dude, and obviously a genius. He could play every instrument. He was literally the bandleader on any of that stuff… Neil has all the confidence in the world, but with Ben on board, there were no limits. Neil has a fair measure of the greatness of his music, but he knew he was even better when Ben was there.” Most recently, Keith had been touring with Young’s wife, Pegi, in support of her second solo album, “Foul Deeds,” for a handful of West Coast performances in June.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Oxford Brookes University: RADAR An investigation of priming, self-consciousness, and allegiance in the diegetic camera horror film by Peter Turner A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the award of Doctor of Philosophy by Oxford Brookes University Submitted June 2017 Statement of originality Some of the discussion of The Blair Witch Project throughout this thesis has formed the basis for a book, Devil’s Advocates: The Blair Witch Project (Auteur, 2014). Some of the discussion of priming in chapter four was also used in a conference paper, Behind the Camera: Priming the Spectator of Found Footage Horror, delivered at The Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image in 2015. Sections on personal imagining also formed the basis of a conference paper, Personal Imagining and the Point-of-View Shot in Diegetic Camera Horror Films, delivered at The Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image in 2017. Finally, significant amounts of Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 will be featured in two chapters of an upcoming edited collection on found footage horror films with the working title [Rec] Terror: Essays on Found Footage Horror Films. i Abstract The main research question underpinning this study asks why and how the diegetic camera technique has become so popular to both contemporary horror filmmakers and audiences. In order to answer this question, this thesis adopts a mainly cognitive theoretical framework in order to address the mental schemata and processes that are elicited and triggered by these films.

Also, I was able to complete this research with the help of professionals, friends, a loan, and luckily some research grants. The main setting for the video material is mostly the aforementioned house. I am in gratitude to architect Timo Jeskanen for designing our home, Rauhala. The most important people during the first few years of shooting the diary were the three families who were simultaneously building houses in Her- manonkimaa. I am especially thankful to the neighbours’ children who are now all adults. The Haarlas, Ahos, Lukinmaas, and later, in the 2000s the Kutvonens and Heikkinens formed a community, which helped me under- stand that there are two types of friends: those who like to be filmed and those who find it awkward.
