He was a founding member of the BBC News Website, leading international coverage as World Editor (1997‐2001). As Head of Product Development for BBC News he helped introduce innovations such as blogs, podcasting and on‐demand video. Most recently he led digital teams, developing websites, mobile and interactive TV applications for News, Sport, Weather and Local. Nic is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism where he has published two recent reports on social media and mainstream media. He is a trainer, writer and consultant on digital media at the interface between technology and journalism. METHODOLOGY AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: This study was completed in June and July 2010 and aims to explore product management best practice in the digital media industry. It aims to raise the profile and understanding of the importance of the role of the product manager in the creation of successful digital products through interviews and case studies. -

This is a relatively new course which began in 2033 and has already educated journalists working in all major TV newsrooms. Location: in the heart of London and on the doorstep of the world's major news and media organisations Faculty: highest-quality teaching staff, led by Lis Howell, an award winning TV journalist, and including renowned media commentator Roy Greenslade, and the former Editor-in-Chief of ITN Stewart Purvis, plus the former Head of News and Current Affairs for Channel 4, David Lloyd. Anderson, Tom Glaisyer, Jason Smith and Marika Rothfeld, October 2011 Report Summary As the media industry evolves to meet the challenges of the emerging digitally-networked era, so too are journalism schools. Democracy and healthy local communities require this evolution. As the media industry reshapes itself, a tremendous opportunity emerges for America‖s journalism programs. Neither news organizations nor journalism programs will disappear, but both must rethink their missions, particularly now that many more people can be journalists (at least, on an occasional basis) and many more people produce media than ever before. The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State Journalism education programs have an University (Photo credit: Sean Horan/Flickr) opportunity to become “anchor institutions” in the emerging informational ecosystem. Many schools have long embraced elements of this vision, but satisfying the information needs of communities will require schools to take on all the challenges of engaging as serious and valuable producers of meaningful journalism. To date, some programs have avoided or shirked these responsibilities, failing to leverage broadcast licenses as part of their educational mission or inadequately supporting the pursuit of meaningful journalism by students. A move to embrace a community news mission would add a powerful momentum to the recommendation of the Knight Commission Report on the Information Needs of Democracies that “higher education, community and nonprofit institutions [should increase their role] as hubs of journalistic activity and other information-sharing for local communities.” This call was echoed in the recently issued Federal Communications Commission report on the changing media landscape in a broadband age. -

AS and A LEVEL MEDIA STUDIES Factsheet Industries and audiences factsheet: The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw Industries Production and distribution • The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw is broadcast weekdays from 06.30-10.00 am. • The Breakfast Show has been running since 1967, but Nick Grimshaw took over as the 15th presenter in 2012. • BBC Radio 1 is broadcast on FM, DAB, Freeview, Freesat, Virgin, Sky, or online via BBC Radio Player (including via the phone or tablet app) where it can be heard live or streamed for 30 days. • It is produced by the BBC from its own studios at Broadcasting House in London. • There’s a useful BBC Academy podcast (with transcript) about how the programme is produced http://www.bbc. co.uk/academy/articles/art20170619095219011 • You can also hear what one of the producers (Fiona Hanlon) thinks when she talks about what it’s like to work on the programme: https://www.shu.ac.uk/learn-more/radio-1- breakfast-show • The music is largely playlisted – what is going to be played on daytime Radio 1 is decided by a committee; they choose around 40 records each week for repeated daytime play (A-list records get 25 plays a week, B-list 15, and C-list eight to 10). -iì~ '1,,J C.12 The Development of the UK Television News Industry 1982 - 1998 Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Alison Preston Deparent of Film and Media Studies University of Stirling July 1999 Abstract This thesis examines and assesses the development of the UK television news industry during the period 1982-1998. Its aim is to ascertain the degree to which a market for television news has developed, how such a market operates, and how it coexists with the 'public service' goals of news provision. A major purpose of the research is to investigate whether 'the market' and 'public service' requirements have to be the conceptual polarities they are commonly supposed to be in much media academic analysis of the television news genre. It has conducted such an analysis through an examination of the development strategies ofthe major news organisations of the BBC, ITN and Sky News, and an assessment of the changes that have taken place to the structure of the news industry as a whole. It places these developments within the determining contexts of Government economic policy and broadcasting regulation. The research method employed was primarily that of the in-depth interview with television news management, politicians and regulators: in other words, those instrumental in directing the strategic development within the television news industry. Its main findings are that there has indeed been a development of market activity within the television news industry, but that the amount of this activity has been limited by the particular economic attributes of the television news product. -

Under the terms of our new Charter, we are now required to publish an annual report for each financial year from the Remuneration Committee with the names of all senior executives of the BBC paid more than £150,000 from licence fee revenue in a financial year. These are set out in this document in bands of £50,000.
