We aim for an overall global exposure of our student's focusing their reach to different parts of world.

Shri K. K. Patel Vice President, Nirma University

Message from the Director General

Internationalisation at Institute of Law, Nirma University is a platform for collaboration of professors and thinkers from all over the world, coming from different walks of life. It gives the students an opportunity to interact and learn from faculty who are the best in their field. Today, more than ever there is a fundamental need for people of diverse backgrounds to come together and share their experiences and ideas. This stems from the fact that the world today is a global village where people of different regions face similar obstacles, being at the cusp of ideological and political shifts. The Institute understands the importance of shaping competent individuals who can contribute towards the society at large by learning not only about laws pertaining to their own country but that of other countries as well.

Dr. Anup K. Singh Director General, Nirma University

03 From the Director Desk

With international boundaries becoming more porous across fields, ranging from economy and trade to education and research, the professional landscape of the future would require law students to have multifarious skills. Through lectures, seminars, exchange programmes and discourse between the faculty and students, Internationalisation aims to accomplish that.

This initiative is a step towards preparing global citizens -- individuals who have the capacity to analyse and grapple with issues that have wide-ranging impacts running through the very fabric of society. The programme acts as a catalyst in introducing students to laws and policies from different perspectives. Such an approach deepens the students' understanding of the core concepts of law, encouraging them to research and find innovative solutions. Training the students with a global outlook opens the avenues for pursuing better career opportunities.

Prof.(Dr.) Purvi Pokhariyal Director, Institute of Law, Nirma University

Message from the Global Professor

Penn State Law is honored to partner with Nirma University Institute of Law in support of this year's International Teaching Month, convening scholars, students, NGO leaders, judges, diplomats, judges, scientists, politicians, volunteers, and citizens from all trades and walks of life—learners, all—from around the world. This year's theme (“Law, Life, and Diversity”) is especially relevant. Even as we confront issues and develop strategies at a local community level, we recognize the value of global engagement. No single institution or nation has a monopoly of ideas—and we know that the answers and opportunities are most likely thousands of miles away; or, as far as ten time zones away.

More personally, I look forward to every International Teaching Month visit to Nirma University and enjoy learning with my Institute of Law students while teaching “Overview of U.S. Law.” The classrooms are active, and the invigorating discussions usually carry across the road over tea in the canteen, adjacent to the beautiful Institute of Law Building. And, like every other international visitor to Ahmedabad, I am inspired by a daily pause at the grounds of Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram.

This year's Nirma University Institute of Law's annual International Teaching Month continues in full-force, notwithstanding a global pandemic which has made in-person, on- location learning problematic, if not impossible. Pressing forward is consistent with Swami Vivekananda's advice over a century ago. The Swami counseled we should act boldly; otherwise, we are like the person who sits beside the Ganga and says, “I will ford the river when all the water has run into the ocean.”

Professor Stephen G. Barnes is Penn State Law Assistant Dean, Graduate and International Programs, at The Pennsylvania State University, U.S.A.

Professor Stephen G. Barnes Global Professor Nirma University

32 REFLECTIONS - Sharing experiences

The Institute believes that the feedback is the most important value addition for the overall development of any organization. Here, the excerpts from the foreign faculty experts who had visited us in the past, gives glimpses of highlights at the ILNU.

Prof. Stephen G. Barnes

Assistant Dean for Graduate and International Programs|Penn State Law

Penn State Law and Nirma University Institute of Law have enjoyed a terrific partnership since 2016, represented by student and faculty exchanges, LL.M scholarships for Nirma law graduates, and other academic activities. More personally, I have been honored to work with Dr. Purvi Pokhariyal, and am especially thrilled to annually teach 1-2 ten-day courses. I call Ahmedabad my "home city in India": an important city in the lifetime of Gandhiji and the New India; also the city where Nirma University Institute of Law convenes learners from around the world to share and learn with Nirma students and professors.

Judge Mel Flanagan

Former Circuit Judge & Adjunct Professor, University of Sarajevo, USA

I have had the opportunity to be a guest instructor at the Nirma University, Institute of Law in 2018 and 2019 and look forward to returning again in February of 2020. I have previously taught classes on Women & Justice, and Trial Advocacy & Communication. This year I will be teaching a course on the United States Justice System.

I have taught law students in the United States and in Bosnia but teaching at ILNU has been a unique experience for me. The students are very engaged in the subject matter and willing to discuss and debate issues quite freely. My classes are very interactive and challenging for students, and often they challenge me. They don't sit passively listening and they are happy to engage with the class and the material which increases their understanding and retention.

Rather than lecture, I prefer to facilitate their examination and understanding of the material. I present opportunities for the students to understand and critically evaluate legal systems. I expect students to be prepared and to contribute in every class and the students of ILNU have not let me down.

We have lively discussions about comparing legal systems to better understand the purpose, impact and effectiveness of each, and to identify the common features, differences, conflicts and failings. We also discuss how important it is that any justice system have the trust and support of the citizens and protect and preserve the rule of law and equal justice to all.

I am very comfortable on campus and enjoy the closeness of the NIRMA and ILNU community. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. There are many opportunities to meet with students, faculty and staff outside of normal classes and to learn more about each other – whether it is walking, running, playing badminton or just sitting and talking. Because I come from abroad and have experience in numerous legal systems, we often discuss my background and I am always interested in learning more about their lives, goals and aspirations.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to be part of the ILNU community and hope to continue this relationship for years to come.

33 Prof.(Dr.) Peter Schaefer HoF University of Applied Science, Germany At both occasions, I gave a one-week elective course on the European Legal System, both covering the law of the European Union and the basics of German as well as French national law. Each course was attended by roughly 70 Nirma Institute of Law students from higher semesters. I was truly impressed by the curious, open-minded and distinguished student body waiting for me in class. Students followed my speech in a serious and focused way, still having a smile on their face and – at least seemingly – understanding my German kind of humor. Questions asked and remarks made always mirrored the highly selective and competitive admission policy of the Institute of Law. Exam results and oral presentations were far beyond expectance and clearly above average – even on complex and picky issues of EU law. All in all, it was a challenging, promising and truly rewarding experience to have the privilege of teaching such an inspiring class of students with a subtle intellect.

Prof. Jane Schukoske Vanderbilt Law School, USA The Institute of Law, Nirma University, regularly hosts international and visiting Indian faculty. ILNU, with its state-of-the-art facilities and cordial faculty and students, is a superb setting for idea exchange and comparative study. The teachers, inspired and supported by Dean Purvi Pokhariyal, engage in ongoing discussions of adult learning theory, skills education, and justice education. Consistent with the theory, students learn by serving local communities and student representatives take an active role in designing skills training. I have learned so much from my interactions. The ILNU community warmly welcomes visitors. ILNU students and faculty have shown me their local community service work, shared the area's special cuisine, and taken me to the historic quarter of Ahmedabad as well as around the beautiful Nirma University campus.

Prof. Raphael Cohen-Almagor Director, University of Hull, UK Two cultures, with long traditions and much accumulated wisdom, have been my fascination for many years: Jewish and Indian. These powerful cultures have shaped our world, influenced millions of people, and have inspired thinking, creativity, scholarship, religion, art, architecture and much more. Eager to learn about India, I was very pleased to receive an invitation to deliver a condensed course on “Speech, Democracy and Liberalism” at the Institute of Law, Nirma University, Ahmedabad in January 2018. It was a fascinating visit during which I have learned a lot. The class at Nirma was attentive. Some of the students had engaged with their studies and were interested to read some articles of the reading list. Students were genuinely interested to contrast and compare between their systems of belief and other liberal conceptions of the good. During the course, they learned about others as well as about themselves as the course had put their systems of belief in an international perspective. They also helped me in elucidating my own views about democracy and freedom of expression in India. It was an enriching experience for all involved. Nirma is a thriving university with dedicated people who go out of their way to ensure student satisfaction. Dean Purvi Pokhariyal, Prof. Nitesh Chaudhary and their team were friendly, kind and attentive. In Ahmedabad, I was privileged to visit Gandhi Ashram, Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, a place of tranquility, peace and reflection. Besides teaching the course, I delivered 14 lectures in 8 cities. I had dozens of meetings with colleagues and students. Dean Purvi Pokhariyal took the time to arrange many of these interesting meetings. The famous Indian hospitality, the celebration of colours, the rich culture, spirituality and beautiful places make Ahmedabad and India at large a very special place. One cannot remain indifferent to Indian charm and contrasts. I carry with me long- lasting memories.

34 Prof. Ylli Dautaj Co-Founder ORIMLIGHYRA.SE, 2017 And Penn State International Arbitration Group: Board Member Having taught, worked, and been a student in several jurisdiction, in different continents, I have never seen the energy I encounter among law students in India. I am extremely impressed with ILNU's excellent leadership, professors, students, and the constant visits by foreign faculty and highly respected and esteemed professionals from the Indian legal community. All this makes for a vibrant and professional environment where students are groomed to be highly skilled and cross-cultural thinkers. I am looking forward to a life-long partnership with ILNU and the Indian legal community more generally! I genuinely consider India my second-home and Ahmedabad my second hometown.

Dr. Andras Hars University of Szeged, Hungary I have visited Nirma University for a week during the March of 2019 as a visiting lecturer and I must confess, it was a most delightful experience. During my stay, I've had fruitful professional discussions with colleagues, such as Dean Purvi Pokhariyal, Ms. Anviksha Pachori, Ms. Nidhi Saroj among others. The university is situated in a state-of-the-art campus which hosts a comfortable and up-to-date library that provides ample of opportunities for research and study. As always, the heart of university life is the cafeteria, where students and professors can exchange ideas, continue the debates regarding the curriculum that is prone to different understandings. The Faculty of Law is home to highly competitive spirited students who work very hard to achieve their ambitions and represent Nirma to the best of their abilities with outstanding results. Overall, Nirma University and especially its Faculty of Law is a great place to enrol as a student and an excellent institution to visit as guest lecturer

Fabricio Fortese Department of Law, Stockholm University, Sweden Teaching at the Institute of Law was an enriching experience. The faculty and the rest of the staff is highly competent and very welcoming. In addition to a comprehensive academic programme, the Institute excels in fostering an open communication channel with its students, to tailor and strengthen their education. And student life at Nirma University is not only about studying law, its campus offers plenty of social events. I particularly enjoyed my time during Navratri – I did not master Garba, but I would happily give it another try in my next visit!

Ms. Claudia Mezones University of Peru, Peru Having been an ILNU Spanish teacher was a very rewarding experience for me. I was able to meet and contribute to the training of future legal professionals in a country so far from mine (Peru), and be the way for them to expand their knowledge of the world and of Hispanic culture, as well as cultural and personal exchange. I thank the dean, my dear Purvi Pokariyal, this opportunity. Best wishes for the ILNU always, and, especially those who were my students.

35 Our Students Speaks

Tushar Choudhary President, Nirma Institute of Law Student Activities Association (NILSAA)

Internationalisation month at ILNU has contributed immensely to the knowledge of students. With changing paradigm of law in the modern era, law and language must not act as impediment and hamper the growth of an individual. The Experience of learning under the immensely experienced international faculty was unique and benefitted us in various aspects such as academics/moot activities/Alternate Dispute Resolution, professional Advocacy skills and much more. The expertise of the faculties at their subject, contributed to our knowledge a lot and the cultural exchange with the faculties was also mutually enriching, in terms of learning the diversity of each other’s country. The faculties also enjoyed the rich Indian heritage and vibrant culture of Ahmedabad during their stay at NIRMA University.

The International Teaching Month is special for more reasons than one. It would be hard to come by an experience which offers not just the practical learnings of organising a month long event, but also, cultural exchange, conversations with experts and a sense of community that the ILNU Team and our guests develop. The International Teaching Month 2021 being hosted online, is a testament to the fact that the dialogue between international experts and students is inalienable to academic progress at ILNU.

Prakul Khera 5th year

International teaching Month is one of its kind event in the whole world, in which you won’t recognize the geographical location of your law school for one month. You will learn from the best in the world. Last year, on a singular day I got first hand exposure of Human Rights in US and Europe, labor laws in South Africa, corporate law in New Zealand and European legal system from the faculties with tremendous exposure in these respective areas. I’ve met amazing people from other end of the globe, who inspire me with their work. This box contains unparallel learning experience, inspiring stories, a few friendships and mutual respect for the cultures across the world, which you don’t want to miss.
