The forebears of Helen Ingles (who was married to William Cuthill). Helen’s forebears are documented in a document entitled “The descendants of Inglis’ of Carslogie March, near Bondfield, Cupar, Fife”. This history covers the period from 1580 to 1857. The original was written by Charles Simpson Inglis. Where it has been possible to check the information given against primary sources such as Old Parish Registers, the history appears to be accurate. Much of the information is, however, not available anywhere else. The layout, spelling and punctuation of the original have been retained with slight changes in generation VII where the author had difficulty fitting all the sections across the page and had to squeeze some parts into odd positions. Copies of Charles Simpson Inglis’s books are now in the National Library of Scotland. Acc 5409 Mf MSS 172 also, but of less interest, Acc 6587 Mf MSS 264 (vol 4) Acc 5186 Mf MSS 165 (A Pedestrian Excursion into the Highlands.) The sketch map shows Fife with a road system, as it would have been in the late nineteenth century but incorporates place names from four centuries. Russell Miln is mentioned and it means Russell Mill (Miln being an old form of mill). This was probably a cereal mill. Although there are Russell Mills near Russell Mains, south east of Cupar these were linen and later jute mills and must have been established long after the time the Inglis family was in occupation. There is waterpower on the site so a cereal mill might previously have occupied it. The sketch map overleaf gives more detail of the Cupar area. A much reconstructed version of Bondfield House still exists but has been re-named. Carslogie House is in ruins. A search of several Gazetteers gave the following information about places mentioned in the history. Ardross: ruined castle 1 mile north-east of Elie, Fife. Fishwick: Ancient parish now in south-west Berwickshire. 1 Greenlaw: parish and village in Berwickshire 7 /2 miles south-west of Duns. Kinninmounth: estate, with building stone quarry, in Ceres parish, Fife. Letham: a village 5 miles east-north-east of Auchtermuchty, Fife. Morebattle: village and parish in extreme east of Roxburghshire. Star: village in Kennoway parish, Fife. Scolpie: a hamlet a few miles north east of Star. No information has so far been found about Feal, Helterburn, Over Whitton, Starbank or Trous. These were presumably farms and do not feature in Gazetteers. The extracts overleaf, taken from Old Parish Records, have been used to confirm the accuracy of the history: From the parish of Cupar, Fife (420). 14th October 1712 Eodem dei William Inglis younger and (blank) Melville his spouse had their son William baptized. The above entry gives information about three generations and makes it clear that the baby’s father was William whereas the original writer had suggested that it could be either William or James. From the parish of Wemyss (459): William Inglis in the parish of Monymeal and Elizabeth Hoge in this parish declared their mutual purpose of marriage on Friday the 28th of January 1737 consigned two crowns before two witness David Hoge and B: James Youel cautioners there shall be no abuse at their wedding. They were married on Friday the 12th March witneses forsd. It is interesting to note that not all couples had to pay the two crowns (which would be worth £26.50 today) to guarantee the behaviour of their guests! This marriage is also recorded in Monimail (488/2) Jany. 29th 1737 William Inglis in this parish and Eliz: Hog in the parish of Wems were contracted. Monimail (448/2) June 25th 1738 (FR 360). William Inglis & Elizabeth Hogg had a child baptized at Abernethy named James. It is not clear why a the baptism of a child in the Secession Church in Abernethy should be recorded in the Established Church in Monimail. Several years later a new clerk made the following entries in the Monimail register: FR 369 The names of the children of those parents who have seceded from the present establishment are as follows: June 25 William Inglis & Elizabeth Hogg had a son bapt. at Abernethy named 1738 James by Mr. Moncrieff seceding minr. April 27th The above named persons had a daughter at the forsaid place named 1740 Katharine. Jany. 19 They had a child baptized at ditto place named William. 1742 Jan 31 They had a child baptized at Ceres named David by Mr. Campbell 1744 seceding minister. Oct 24 they had a child baptized at Pethcondie named John by ditto. 1745 (blank)7th they had a child baptized at Ceres named Margaret by ditto. 1747 No record of the other births to William and Elizabeth has been found. Buried 1728 13th September Helen Bred spouse to deceast William Inglis tenant in Russells Miln buried. 1748 21st July Wiliam Inglis tenant in Letham had his daughter buried. 1720 28th Dec William Inglis tennant in Russelmiln buried. 9th December 1710 James Inglis son to John Inglis weaver Russell Milne and Burger of this Burgh was buried. 1729 17th Aprill John Inglis in Carslogie his daughter Helen buried. 1737 10th February Carslogie Coatton Robert Inglis weaver in Carslogie buried. Cupar 420/2 Fr 441 23rd November 1726 William Inglis in Rufselmiln had his fon John baptized. Parish of Monimail Fr 355 Novr 29 1734 William Inglis and Katharine Melvill in Easter Fernie had A daur baptized; in Moonzie named Katharine, William Inglis and John Inglis w’efses. The same birth is also recorded at Fr 378 where a clerk appears to have re-written the register: 1734, Novr 29 William Inglis and Katharine Melville had a child bapt. named Katharine. There are no records of testaments by any of the Inglis family in the St. Andrews Commissariot pre 1800. Neither the name Inglis nor the place, Bondfield appear in the indexes to the Register of the Great Seal of Scotland between 1634 and 1668. More about searches which have been carried out in the General and Particular Registers of Sasines follows after the “Descendants of Inglis” chart. The following has nothing to do with the family but may indicate why some births and marriages were never recorded in Old Parish Registers.
