The Eagles won the first 2007-08 contest, 7-4, but Stout came back for 12-7 win the second game. Friday, August 31 Trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning of the second contest, and the wind starting to kick up in advance of the rain, Soccer at St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn., 4 p.m. Nick Klaren (So, North St. Paul, Minn) put Stout (17-16, 8-10) ahead with a grand slam to left field. The Eagles Volleyball at UW-Eau Claire Tournament, TBA (14-13, 6-8) came back to tie the game in the seventh with a run, but Seth Maier (Sr, Park Falls) put Stout Football vs. Menlo College, 6 p.m. ahead for good with a two-run double in the bottom half of the seventh. Volleyball at UW-Eau Claire Tournament, TBA In the opening game, La Crosse scored all seven of their runs after two outs. The Eagles took a 6-1 lead with three runs vs. Edgewood and Lawrence, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the fourth, then added another run in the fifth. Stout took advantage of inconsistent relief pitching by the Eagles Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Alumni/ in the eighth inning, scoring three runs. Matt Krause (Jr, Bonduel) got an RBI with a bases-loaded walk, and Luke Intrasquad meet, 9:30 a.m. Schultz (Sr, Menomonie) drove in a run with the bases loaded when he was by a pitch. ERIK JOHNSON, SETH MAIER MAKE HEADLINES IN SWEEP OF EAGLES MENOMONIE (April 21, 2007) - Erik Johnson (Jr, La Crosse) had seven runs batted in on the day and Seth Maier (Sr, Park Falls) became UW-Stout’s all-time hits leader as the Blue Devils swept UW-La Crosse, 8-3, 10-2, Saturday at Nelson Field. Johnson had three RBIs in the first contest, including a two run double during a three-run third inning, giving Stout (16-15, 7-9) a 5-1 lead. The Eagles (13-12, 5-7) added two runs in thetop of the fourth, but Stout got a three-run fourth as Matt Krause (Jr, Bonduel) drove in two runs with a single and Stout led by the final 8-3 score. Cliff Christopherson (So, Bloomington, Minn) picked up his first win of the season, after rocky first inning where the first two batters tagged him for hits and put a run on the board. Christopherson settled down to work seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs, striking out four and walking two. In the nightcap, Johnson drove in the Blue Devils’ first run with a single to right field. The Eagles scored two runs in the second and carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth when Stout scored two runs. Mike White (Jr, Rochester, Minn) doubled in a run and Tim Schneider (Jr, West Salem) drove in two runs with a double. Maier became the Blue Devils’ all-time hits leader when he led off the top of the fifth inning with a single to left field. He surpassed Jeff Kloes’ mark of 204 hits which stood since 1987. Maier collected another hit in the sixth inning, a two-run single down the right field line to highlight another three run inning. Johnson finished out the scoring, hitting a three-run home run to right center in the eighth inning. Johnson finished the day going 5-for-9 with the seven RBIs. He was 3-for-5 in the second game and drove in four runs. Chad Tousley (Sr, Prescott) went seven innings to get the win. A PITCHERS’ BATTLE, A HITTER’S DREAM EQUAL SPLIT WITH POINT STEVENS POINT (April 18, 2007) - It’s hard to believe it was the same two teams on the field in these two games of a WIAC doubleheader as UW-Stevens Point won a 1-0 pitchers’ battle and UW-Stout won the nightcap, a hitters’ dream, 13-10, Wednesday at University Field. Blue Devil pitchers matched highly touted Jordan Zimmermann of Stevens Point in the opener, but the Pointers prevailed, 1-0, in the first game as Zimmermann allowed two hits and the Blue Devils’ Nick Klaren (So, North St. Paul, Minn) and Matt Doornink (So, Cottage Grove, Minn) allowed only three hits and one earned run. Klaren struck out eight and all three hits in getting the loss and Doornink struck out four while allowing no hits. Zimmermann, who is expected to eventually don a professional jersey, struck out 11. The only run of the game came in the fifth inning when the Pointers’ Tim Schlosser reached on a two base error, then came home on a bloop single by Ben Warwick. The Blue Devils, which had no hits between the third and eighth innings, had runners on first and third in the ninth inning, but Zimmermann pitched out of the jam. The second game was a reverse of tactics as Stout cracked out 16 hits and Stevens Point collected 13 hits. Trailing 10-7 with two outs in the eight, Stout scored four runs, tying the game on a run scoring single by Erik Johnson (Jr, La Crosse) and took the lead on an RBI double by Matt Krause (Jr, Bonduel). Errors were almost as numerous as hits as Stout committed four and Stevens Point committed six, but four in the third inning where the Blue Devils scored six runs. The Pointers scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Stout stretched the score to 7-3 in the fifth. It was the Pointers’ turn to capitalize on Stout errors in the fifth inning as they scored six runs on three Stout errors and took a 9-7 lead. Doornink pitched 1.1 innings to score the win, allowing two hits while facing six batters. Rob Heller (Sr, Coon Valley) came on in his first relief appearance of the year to earn the save. Klaren and the Pointers’ Brad Archambeau each went 4-for-6 with two RBI to lead all batters. Johnson and Krause each had three hits, with Krause picking up three RBI. Greg Smolinski (Fr, Menasha) was 1-for-5 with three RBI. Brandon Scheidler was 3-for-5 for Stevens Point. BLUE DEVILS SPLIT WITH LAWRENCE APPLETON (April 17, 2007) - Tanner Kattre (So, Abbotsford) hit a two run single to key a three-run seventh inning to lift UW-Stout to a 4-2 game one win over Lawrence University, Tuesday, but the Vikings came back with a 6-4 win in the second game. Trailing 2-1 heading into the seventh of the opener, Tim Schneider (Jr, West Salem) laid down a bunt to score Nick Klaren (So, North St. Paul, Minn), who led off the inning on an infield single, to tie the score at two apiece. Luke Schultz (Sr, Menomonie) followed Klaren’s at-bat with a outfield single and Mike White (Jr, Rochester, Minn) reached on a bunt to set the table for Kattre’s two-run single down the left field line. Eric Paul (Jr, Wisconsin Rapids) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out two, to get his first win of the season. Matt Krause (Jr, Bonduel) pitched the final inning to record the save. In the nightcap, Lawrence (5-12) scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead, then added two more in the fourth. Stout (13-14) added a run in the fifth on a Marc Damrow (Fr, Watertown) force out, then tacked on two more in the sixth inning when Dan Mielke (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) drove in a run and Kattre scored on a passed ball.

NOT MUCH TO WRITE HOME ABOUT IN SOFTBALL LOSS TO POINTERS MENOMONIE (April 21, 2007) - UW-Stout had very little to write home about as the Blue Devils fell to UW-Stevens Point by identical 9- 0 scores in both games. The Pointers’ Stephanie Anderson threw a perfect game in the six inning first game. The Blue Devils (13-13, 4-6) did a little better in the second game, picking up five hits, but stranding all five runners. Savanah Oeltjen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) was 2- for-3 in the second game and was the first Blue Devil to get a hit on the day, beating out an infield single. The 18th ranked Pointers (23-5, 8-2) clubbed out 15 hits in the first game, then had eight hits in the second. Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, April 25 and will be at St. Scholastica, Thursday, April 26. Stout will host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, April 28 and UW-Oshkosh, Sunday, April 29. BLUE DEVILS TAKE BOTH GAMES FROM YELLOWJACKETS SUPERIOR (April 19, 2007) - UW-Stout took both games from UW-Superior, 4-1, 13-9, the first time the Blue Devils have swept a conference opponent in league play since the 2004 season. Stout (13-11, 4-4) opened the cold, windy day near the Lake Superior shoreline with a two-run first inning after Savanah Oeltjen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) and Nelly Peterson (So, Cumberland) hit back-to-back doubles in the first inning. An RBI single by Amanda McKellips brought home Peterson to give Stout a 2-0 lead. The Yellowjackets (12-14, 1-5) cut the lead in half on an RBI double by Brooke Bailey in the bottom half of the inning. The Blue Devils would get all they needed in the second inning when Jackie Juan (Jr, La Crosse) lifted her third home run of the season, a two run shot. Kristy Hoffman (Fr, Circle Pines, Minn) picked up the win, going the distance, scattering eight hits, with four strikeouts and two walks. The two teams combined for 30 hits in the second game, with Stout smacking out 18 hits. Stout took a 7-2 lead through the fifth inning, but Superior tied the score with a five run fifth. Stout added two runs in the sixth to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Blue Devils added four runs in the seventh for a 13-7 lead, and Superior tagged on two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Oeltjen was 3-for-5 with an RBI, while McKellips was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Juan was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Jessica Glasgow (So, St. Paul, Minn) pitched the final 2.1 innings for the win. FALCONS TAKE CONFERENCE TWINBILL RIVER FALLS (April 17, 2007) - UW-River Falls scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a first game, 4-3, win and the Falcons scored three runs in each the fifth and sixth innings to win the second game, 6-3, as the Falcons stayed perfect in conference play with a sweep over UW-Stout Tuesday. The first game was nip-and-tuck all the way as Stout (11-11, 2-4) and River Falls (23-5, 6-0) traded jabs throughout the contest. The Blue Devils went ahead quickly on an RBI single by Jackie Juan (Jr, La Crosse) in the first inning, but the Falcons took the lead in the second inning on an Ashley James two run double. Stout knotted the score in the fifth when Cassey Knoche (Fr, St. Paul, Minn) lifted a solo home run to center field. The took a one run lead in the sixth, but Stout’s Nelly Peterson (So, Cumberland) cracked a double to score Beth Lloyd (Jr, Fond du Lac). Brittany Rathbun hit the game winning single in the bottom of the eighth. Stout took a lead in the second game when Kristy Hoffman (Fr, Circle Pines, Minn), who had made her first appearance at the plate in the opening game going 1-for-3, smacked a two run single to give Stout a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Peterson added to the Blue Devils’ lead with a run scoring double in the third. The Blue Devils’ offense ended there and the Falcons picked up the slack, scoring three runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth. Shortstop Mindy Rudiger hit a three round tripper in the fifth and drove in two runs in the sixth.

NONEMACHERS TO TAKE GAME TO GERMANY MENOMONIE (April 17, 2007) - Sprechen sie deutsch? UW-Stout’s 7-foot centers Jacob Nonemacher (Sr, Kalispell, Mont) and John Nonemacher (Sr, Kalispell, Mont) will have to learn at least a little German as they will be taking a shot at life in professional basketball in Germany. The twins have signed with a European sports management agency and are expecting to attend a pro camp in Duesseldorf, Germany, June 22-24 to prepare for the season. “Germany has one of the best basketball leagues in the world, along with a few other European countries,” John Nonemacher said. “The agency we signed with is located in Germany, but that does not mean that we will playing in Germany in the fall...it could be Italy, Spain, Greece or so on.” Nonemacher doesn’t see a lot of differences between European basketball and basketball in the US, beyond the shape of the free throw lane. “As far as we can tell, it is like what you would watch during the Olympics or the World Championships,” John said. “The rim is 10 feet hit and the ball is the same size.” Jacob Nonemacher was the Blue Devils’ leading rebounder with 9.2 rebounds per contest, ranking him second in the WIAC for the 2007 season. Nonemacher was also second in the WIAC in blocked shots (3.28), fourth in field goal shooting percentage (.556) and 10th in scoring (14.4). He finished his Stout career ranked 10th on the all-time rebounding list with 688. John Nonemacher concluded his career with his best season, averaging 6.1 points and 3.5 rebounds. He was second on the team in field goal percentage (.564) and scored a career-high 16 points against UW-La Crosse. The Nonemachers are looking at their overseas trip as a stepping stone. “We plan on playing at the highest level of international basketball,” John said. “Also, we will be working on our game to possibly make a push here at the NBA. The opportunity to play as a professional when we did not play in high school is something that we are very excited about.” John and Jacob will participate in the Scorers 1st Showcase 2007 in Düsseldorf/Hilden . ANDRIST TO RETURN TO QATAR TO COACH NATIONAL TEAM MENOMONIE (April 16, 2007) - UW-Stout men’s basketball coach Eddie Andrist could be living out the Olympic dream. Andrist spent his spring break selecting the 16-member men’s national basketball team for the tiny Arabian peninsula country of Qatar. This will be Andrist’s second foray into international basketball with Qatar. Andrist coached the Qatar Under-20 national team to the Asian Youth Championships in 2000. Andrist, along with former Blue Devil assistant coach Eric Gardow, will return to Qatar in May to begin training, a training program that will take the team to the countries of Slovenia, Egypt, back to Qatar, Taiwan, and China before traveling to Japan for the Asian Games and the Olympic qualifier in late July. “Asian basketball talent and focus is at an all time high and to win on this big of stage will be extremely difficult,” Andrist said. “There will be no margin for error so the health and fitness of our team will be critical. The team will have to learn my system quickly in order to have a chance.” If the Qatar team wins the Asian Games - China, with NBA superstar Yao Ming leading the way, is the favorite - they would qualify to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, with Andrist as the head coach, living out an Olympic dream.
