FINDING AN INTERNSHIP

At Occidental College, students are not placed into internships. Instead, it is the student's responsibility to research options and find a suitable site. However, there are several Career Development Center resources that provide a great place to start your search for an internship. Your primary resources include: TIGERlink, NIC, LACN. Additionally, talk to faculty members, use your network (friends, family, alumni), and be willing to do research.

 TIGERlink is an Oxy only resource that allows students to identify available full-time, part-time, summer and temporary jobs and internships. This site also provides you with the opportunity to make appointments with the CDC staff and keep abreast of upcoming events. As an Oxy student, an account is automatically created for you. To log-in simply access the following site: https://oxy- EXCLUSIVE csm.symplicity.com/students/ and type in your Oxy email address with your password (please OXY ONLY note that this password is different from your Oxy network).  Occidental College belongs to the Nationwide Internship Consortium (NIC) which allows access to thousands of national internship opportunities. Internships target students from liberal arts colleges. NIC includes colleges like: the , , Johns Hopkins University, , Lewis & Clark College and the University of Chicago.  The Liberal Arts Career NetWORK (LACN) is a consortium of 39 top liberal arts colleges and universities which collaboratively provide students with job and internship opportunities. LACN schools include: Amherst, Bowdoin, Carleton, Haverford, Middlebury, and Vassar colleges.

INTERNSHIP SITES There are several on-line sites that offer excellent choices for just about any type of internship. On the sites listed below, you will find opportunities for a variety of internship opportunities available for fall, spring and summer semesters, as well as internships abroad. This not a comprehensive list, but a starting point of general sites. There are several sites that target specific career fields or areas of interest. Remember as with any internship opportunity, you should carefully evaluate the opportunity for yourself to the legitimacy of the opening and the safety of the environment.

Internships.com focuses it efforts on assisting and educating students, employers, and educators on how to develop and find an abundance of national and international internship opportunities. Looksharp (formerly InternMatch) is the largest internship and entry-level jobs marketplace dedicated entirely to students and new grads. They provide templates on resume and cover letter writing, to advanced advice on how to reach out to recruiters and what to say during interviews. In addition, they have company-specific pages with videos, pictures, and social media feeds so you can get to know employers before applying. There are over 30,000 companies on Looksharp, plus tons of SMBs and NGOs.

Idealist is all about connecting idealists - people who want to do good - with opportunities for action and collaboration. With more than 100,000 organizations, Idealist helps people move from intention to action all over the world. The site is ideal for those looking for volunteer opportunities, nonprofit jobs, internships, and organizations working to change the world since 1995.

INDEED.COM

With over 180 million unique visitors every month from over 50 different countries, Indeed has become the catalyst for putting the world to work. Since 2004, Indeed has given job seekers free access to millions of jobs from thousands of company websites and job boards. Employers also post jobs directly on Indeed.

SIMPLYHIRED.COM

Simply Hired is a job search engine that collects job listings from all over the web, including company career pages, job boards and niche job websites. Then, similar to other major search engines, Simply Hired matches and displays relevant jobs to job seekers. Simply Hired lists job openings from 600,000 unique employers.

STUDENTS.LINKEDIN.COM

From following a company of interest to joining professional associations/groups, LinkedIn is another tool that can aid you in your search for both jobs and internships. Students.LinkedIn.com is a specialized website for students looking for internships and entry-level jobs. The CDC holds workshops throughout the year on how to successfully navigate and use LinkedIn.

GOABROAD.COM

GoAbroad.com provides directories for those seeking an experience abroad. Tens of thousands of international opportunities are updated daily including: study abroad, internships, volunteer opportunities, teach abroad, and language schools.
